Shani mahadasha is about
hard work, duty and delay
Shani · Surya
Surya antardasha in Shani mahadasha runs 11 months 12 days. It is the fifth of the nine and begins 9 years 11 months 21 days after the mahadasha starts.
Shani’s 19 years × Surya’s 6 years ÷ 120
11 months 12 days · 347 days
Shukra antardasha comes before it, and Chandra antardasha after it.
Shani and Surya are enemies to each other. That natural relationship is where reading a Shani–Surya period starts; where Shani and Surya sit in your kundli decides what it brings.
hard work, duty and delay
standing, authority and the father
Shani–Surya area by area, in plain words, from Parashara’s verses set out below
| Area | What the verses give |
|---|---|
| Work and standing | When it goes well: you enjoy good relations with your employer; when it is hard: you lose your position, your name suffers, and business ventures meet obstacles. |
| Money and property | When it goes well: you gain vehicles and livestock; when it is hard: you lose things you hold dear. |
| Family | When it goes well: your family thrives and children bring happiness; when it is hard: you are separated from close relatives and lose kinsmen. |
| Health | When it is hard: you suffer heart trouble, fevers, fears and mental anguish. |
For faith and journeys, Parashara’s verses on Shani–Surya give nothing of their own; there the two grahas’ places in your kundli decide.
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 57, verses 37–42
Parashara reads Surya’s antardasha in Shani’s mahadasha by where Surya sits, counted from the lagna and from Shani, and by what it rules; your kundli shows which line is yours, and though the text speaks of a man, its results apply to anyone.
For relief from these troubles, BPHS prescribes the worship of Surya.
BPHS 57.42A caution: When Surya rules the 2nd or 7th house, BPHS warns of distress to the body. The 2nd and 7th are the maraka houses, which the texts link with danger to life. BPHS 57.42
What Shani and Surya are for each lagna, as Parashara lists them, and the two read together
Both are favourable for Vrishabh (Taurus) lagna. Both are hard for Kark (Cancer), Meen (Pisces) lagna, where the period asks for the most care. For Mesh (Aries), Singh (Leo), Tula (Libra), Vrishchik (Scorpio), Dhanu (Sagittarius), Kumbh (Aquarius) lagna one is good and the other hard, so the period is mixed. Where one of the two is neutral, the other decides the lean: towards hard for Mithun (Gemini). For Kanya (Virgo), Makar (Capricorn) lagna both are neutral, and where Shani and Surya sit decides it.
The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:
| Lagna | Shani is (lord of) | Surya is (lord of) | Together |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mesh (Aries) | Malefic 10th and 11th | Benefic 5th | Mixed |
| Vrishabh (Taurus) | Yogakaraka 9th and 10th | Benefic 4th | Favourable |
| Mithun (Gemini) | Neutral 8th and 9th | Malefic 3rd | Leans hard |
| Kark (Cancer) | Maraka 7th and 8th | Maraka 2nd | Hard |
| Singh (Leo) | Malefic · Maraka 6th and 7th | Benefic 1st | Mixed |
| Kanya (Virgo) | Neutral 5th and 6th | Neutral— gives results by association (34.32) 12th | Placement decides |
| Tula (Libra) | Yogakaraka 4th and 5th | Malefic 11th | Mixed |
| Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Malefic 3rd and 4th | Yogakaraka— as the verse names it, together with Chandra, the 9th lord (34.35–36) 10th | Mixed |
| Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Maraka 2nd and 3rd | Benefic · Yoga— gives yoga together with Budh (34.38) 9th | Mixed |
| Makar (Capricorn) | Neutral— the lagna lord; not a killer on his own, the verse says (34.39) 1st and 2nd | Neutral 8th | Placement decides |
| Kumbh (Aquarius) | Benefic— the lagna lord, and one the verse itself names auspicious for Kumbh (34.41) 1st and 12th | Maraka 7th | Mixed |
| Meen (Pisces) | Malefic · Maraka— lord of the 11th and 12th, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.43–44) 11th and 12th | Malefic 6th | Hard |
“Together” reads Shani and Surya side by side: both favourable is Favourable; one favourable and one neutral, Leans favourable; one each way, Mixed; one hard and one neutral, Leans hard; both hard, Hard; both neutral, Placement decides. A Yoga pair is two grahas Parashara names together for that lagna.
One kundli that meets Shani–Surya at 41, read the way the report reads yours
From the Janam Kundli report
Shani rules your 2nd house and 3rd house and sits in your 11th house: this period brings those matters forward — the money at hand, the family, and speech; effort, courage, younger siblings and short journeys. Mixed — a house of wealth or gain and strong in its sign; on the other side: short of Shadbala and debilitated in the navamsa.
In this kundli it runs 12 August 2025 – 25 July 2026, from the age of 41 to 42. Its length here can differ from the one above by a day, because each kundli’s dates round to the day.
Surya: rules your 9th house, sits in your 2nd house. It brings fortune, the father, teachers, and long travel. Mixed — a house of wealth or gain, lord of a trikona, well placed from Shani and strong in the navamsa; on the other side: short of Shadbala and in an enemy's sign.
Shadbala: the six-fold measure of a graha’s strength the report computes; “short of Shadbala” means below the strength the texts ask of it. Navamsa: the ninth-division chart, read for a graha’s inner strength. Debilitated: in its sign of fall, where a graha is weakest.
Shani–Surya divides into nine pratyantars from Surya’s own on. Each length is counted between the dates beside it, and comes out the same in any kundli give or take a day; the dates and readings are this one’s.
| Pratyantar | Length | In this kundli | The report reads |
|---|---|---|---|
| Surya | 17 days | 12 August 2025 – 29 August 2025 | Mixed |
| Chandra | 29 days | 29 August 2025 – 27 September 2025 | Mixed |
| Mangal | 20 days | 27 September 2025 – 17 October 2025 | Opens |
| Rahu | 1 month 21 days | 17 October 2025 – 8 December 2025 | Mixed |
| Guru | 1 month 15 days | 8 December 2025 – 23 January 2026 | Mixed |
| Shani | 1 month 24 days | 23 January 2026 – 19 March 2026 | Mixed |
| Budh | 1 month 19 days | 19 March 2026 – 8 May 2026 | Care |
| Ketu | 20 days | 8 May 2026 – 28 May 2026 | Mixed |
| Shukra | 1 month 27 days | 28 May 2026 – 25 July 2026 | Mixed |

Suggestions for Surya’s months, which your kundli confirms
Parashara gives Shani–Surya a remedy of its own (BPHS 57.42), set out above under “Parashara’s remedy”; it comes first.
ॐ ह्रां ह्रीं ह्रौं सः सूर्याय नमः
Daan: wheat and jaggery, on Sunday
What helps and what to keep clear of in any Surya period: Surya mahadasha. Its vrat, ratna, stotra and puja: Surya upay.
11 months 12 days (347 days): Shani’s 19 years × Surya’s 6 years ÷ 120. It begins 9 years 11 months 21 days after a Shani mahadasha starts.
Not in advance: it turns on your lagna and on where Shani and Surya sit in your kundli. By Parashara’s lists it is strongest for Vrishabh (Taurus) lagna. It is hardest for Kark (Cancer), Meen (Pisces) lagna. By nature the two are enemies. On the Dhanu lagna kundli above, the Janam Kundli report reads it as “Mixed”, as its chip above says.
Nine, in the order Surya, Chandra, Mangal, Rahu, Guru, Shani, Budh, Ketu, Shukra. Each is Shani–Surya’s length × the pratyantar lord’s years ÷ 120, so the longest is Shukra’s, about 1 month 27 days, and the shortest Surya’s, about 17 days.
Parashara gives this antardasha a remedy of its own (BPHS 57.42), set out above under “Parashara’s remedy”. The Surya beej mantra, Om Hraam Hreem Hraum Sah Suryaya Namah, and a daan of wheat and jaggery on Sunday are the everyday upay for Shani–Surya, where your kundli shows the need.
It follows from the Moon’s nakshatra at your birth. Enter your birth details and the whole 120-year timeline comes with it, each period read for your chart.
