How the two grahas get on

Guru counts Budh an enemy, and Budh counts Guru neither friend nor enemy (neutral). That natural relationship is where reading a Guru–Budh period starts; where Guru and Budh sit in your kundli decides what it brings.

What Parashara says

Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 56, verses 20–31

Parashara reads Budh’s antardasha in Guru’s mahadasha by where Budh sits, counted from the lagna and from Guru, and by what it rules; your kundli shows which line is yours, and though the text speaks of a man, its results apply to anyone.

When it goes well

  • When Budh (Mercury) is exalted, in his own sign, or in a kendra (the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house) or a trikona (the 1st, 5th or 9th house); or Budh is joined by Guru, the mahadasha lord (ruler of the main period), BPHS gives gains of wealth, ease of body, a rise to authority, and vehicles, clothes and livestock.BPHS 56.20–21½
  • When Budh (Mercury) is in a kendra (the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house) or in the 5th house counted from Guru, the mahadasha lord (ruler of the main period), or Budh is exalted, BPHS gives wealth earned in one's own country, happiness from parents, and vehicles through the favour of those in power.BPHS 56.23–24
  • When Budh (Mercury) is joined by a malefic (one of the naturally harsh grahas) but receives the drishti (aspect, a graha's glance) of a benefic (one of the naturally kind grahas), BPHS gives enjoyment and gains of wealth, vehicles and clothes at the start of the antardasha (sub-period). It adds that its end brings loss of wealth and distress to the body.BPHS 56.29–29½

When it is hard

  • When Budh (Mercury) receives the drishti (aspect, a graha's glance) of Mangal (Mars), BPHS warns of more enemies, loss of comfort and enjoyment, losses in business, and fever and dysentery.BPHS 56.22–22½
  • When Budh (Mercury) is in the 6th, 8th or 12th house counted from Guru, the mahadasha lord (ruler of the main period), or is joined by a malefic (one of the naturally harsh grahas) without the drishti (aspect, a graha's glance) of any benefic, BPHS warns of loss of wealth, journeys abroad, danger from thieves while travelling, wounds, burning sensations, eye trouble and wandering in foreign lands.BPHS 56.25–26
  • When Budh (Mercury) is joined by one or more malefics (the naturally harsh grahas) in the 6th, 8th or 12th house, BPHS warns of distress without cause, anger, loss of livestock, losses in business and the fear of untimely death.BPHS 56.27–28

Parashara’s remedy

For a longer life and relief from the other troubles, BPHS calls reciting the Vishnu Sahasranama (the thousand names of Vishnu) the most effective and helpful remedy.

BPHS 56.30–31

A caution: When Budh rules the 2nd or 7th house, BPHS counts this sub-period maraka (a time the texts link with danger to life) and warns that untimely death may be feared. BPHS 56.30–31

Guru–Budh for your lagna

What Guru and Budh are for each lagna, as Parashara lists them, and the two read together

For Mesh (Aries), Kark (Cancer), Singh (Leo), Kanya (Virgo), Tula (Libra), Vrishchik (Scorpio), Makar (Capricorn), Meen (Pisces) lagna one is good and the other hard, so the period is mixed. Where one of the two is neutral, the other decides the lean: towards good for Dhanu (Sagittarius) and towards hard for Vrishabh (Taurus), Mithun (Gemini), Kumbh (Aquarius).

The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:

  • Yogakaraka: the strongest graha a lagna can have: the one Parashara names as bringing yoga, or the one lord of both a kendra (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) and a trikona (1st, 5th, 9th) (34.13)
  • Benefic, Malefic, Neutral: works for the lagna; brings its harder matters; neither
  • Lagna lord: the lagna’s own graha, where the verse calls it neither good nor hard
  • Maraka: a killer Parashara names for the lagna, watched for health and longevity; printed alone, or after another label. It is not always the lord of the 2nd or 7th: where it differs, the line under it gives the verse
  • · Yoga: one of two grahas he says give yoga together for this lagna

“Together” reads Guru and Budh side by side: both favourable is Favourable; one favourable and one neutral, Leans favourable; one each way, Mixed; one hard and one neutral, Leans hard; both hard, Hard; both neutral, Placement decides. A Yoga pair is two grahas Parashara names together for that lagna. “Lagna lord” and “Mildly malefic” are the verse’s own words, neither favourable nor hard, and count as neutral here.

From the Janam Kundli report

Guru mahadasha Care

Guru rules your 3rd house and 6th house and sits in your 9th house: this period brings those matters forward — effort, courage, younger siblings and short journeys; illness, debt, disputes, and thankless work. Go carefully — short of Shadbala, in an enemy's sign in the navamsa, in an enemy's sign and combust; on the other side: a kendra or trikona and vargottama.

Budh antardasha Care

In this kundli it runs 13 January 2066 – 20 April 2068, from the age of 75 to 77. Its length here can differ from the one above by a day, because each kundli’s dates round to the day.

Budh: rules your 9th house and 12th house, sits in your 10th house. It brings fortune, the father, teachers, and long travel; spending, sleep, foreign places, and what is given away. Go carefully — short of Shadbala, in an enemy's sign and combust; on the other side: a kendra or trikona and lord of a trikona.

Shadbala: the six-fold measure of a graha’s strength the report computes; “short of Shadbala” means below the strength the texts ask of it. Vargottama: in the same rashi in the birth chart and in the navamsa, which strengthens a graha. Navamsa: the ninth-division chart, read for a graha’s inner strength. Combust: so close to the Sun that its strength is lost in the Sun’s rays.

Its nine pratyantars

Guru–Budh divides into nine pratyantars from Budh’s own on. Each length is counted between the dates beside it, and comes out the same in any kundli give or take a day; the dates and readings are this one’s.

Common questions

How long is Guru mahadasha Budh antardasha?

2 years 3 months 6 days (828 days): Guru’s 16 years × Budh’s 17 years ÷ 120. It begins 4 years 8 months after a Guru mahadasha starts.

Is Guru mahadasha Budh antardasha good or bad?

Not in advance: it turns on your lagna and on where Guru and Budh sit in your kundli. By Parashara’s lists no lagna has both lords favourable. By nature the friendship is uneven: Guru sees Budh as an enemy, and Budh sees Guru as neutral. On the Tula lagna kundli above, the Janam Kundli report reads it as “Care”, as its chip above says.

What are the pratyantars of Guru mahadasha Budh antardasha?

Nine, in the order Budh, Ketu, Shukra, Surya, Chandra, Mangal, Rahu, Guru, Shani. Each is Guru–Budh’s length × the pratyantar lord’s years ÷ 120, so the longest is Shukra’s, about 4 months 16 days, and the shortest Surya’s, about 1 month 12 days.

What upay helps in Budh antardasha?

Parashara gives this antardasha a remedy of its own (BPHS 56.30–31), set out above under “Parashara’s remedy”. The Budh beej mantra, Om Braam Breem Braum Sah Budhaya Namah, and a daan of green moong and green cloth on Wednesday are the everyday upay for Guru–Budh, where your kundli shows the need.
