Mangal mahadasha is about
effort, property and disputes
Mangal · Budh
Budh antardasha in Mangal mahadasha runs 11 months 27 days. It is the fifth of the nine and begins 3 years 6 months after the mahadasha starts.
Mangal’s 7 years × Budh’s 17 years ÷ 120
11 months 27 days · 362 days
Shani antardasha comes before it, and Ketu antardasha after it.
Mangal counts Budh an enemy, and Budh counts Mangal neither friend nor enemy (neutral). That natural relationship is where reading a Mangal–Budh period starts; where Mangal and Budh sit in your kundli decides what it brings.

Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 54, verses 36–47
Parashara reads Budh’s antardasha in Mangal’s mahadasha by where Budh sits, counted from the lagna and from Mangal, and by what it rules; your kundli shows which line is yours, and though the text speaks of a man, its results apply to anyone.
For relief, BPHS prescribes reciting the Vishnu Sahasranama and giving a horse in charity.
BPHS 54.46–47A caution: When Budh rules your 2nd or 7th house (the maraka houses, which the texts link with danger to life), BPHS warns of the possibility of serious illness, and asks for care with health. BPHS 54.46–47
What Mangal and Budh are for each lagna, as Parashara lists them, and the two read together
Both are favourable for Dhanu (Sagittarius) lagna. For Mesh (Aries), Kark (Cancer), Singh (Leo), Kanya (Virgo), Tula (Libra), Makar (Capricorn), Meen (Pisces) lagna one is good and the other hard, so the period is mixed. Where one of the two is neutral, the other decides the lean: towards hard for Vrishabh (Taurus), Mithun (Gemini), Vrishchik (Scorpio), Kumbh (Aquarius).
The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:
| Lagna | Mangal is (lord of) | Budh is (lord of) | Together |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mesh (Aries) | Benefic 1st and 8th | Malefic 3rd and 6th | Mixed |
| Vrishabh (Taurus) | Maraka 7th and 12th | Mildly malefic— lord of the 2nd and 5th, which the verse calls 'somewhat inauspicious' (34.23) and does not name among the killers 2nd and 5th | Leans hard |
| Mithun (Gemini) | Malefic 6th and 11th | Lagna lord— the lagna lord, which the verse leaves unjudged: 34.25 names only Shukra auspicious for Mithun 1st and 4th | Leans hard |
| Kark (Cancer) | Yogakaraka 5th and 10th | Malefic 3rd and 12th | Mixed |
| Singh (Leo) | Yogakaraka 4th and 9th | Malefic— lord of the 2nd, but the killers the verse names for this lagna are Shani and Chandra (34.29–30) 2nd and 11th | Mixed |
| Kanya (Virgo) | Malefic 3rd and 8th | Benefic · Yoga— gives yoga together with Shukra (34.32) 1st and 10th | Mixed |
| Tula (Libra) | Malefic · Maraka 2nd and 7th | Benefic · Yoga— gives yoga together with Chandra (34.34) 9th and 12th | Mixed |
| Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Neutral 1st and 6th | Malefic 8th and 11th | Leans hard |
| Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Benefic 5th and 12th | Benefic · Yoga— gives yoga together with Surya (34.38)— lord of the 7th, but the killers the verse names for this lagna are Shani and Shukra (34.37–38) 7th and 10th | Favourable |
| Makar (Capricorn) | Malefic · Maraka— lord of the 4th and 11th, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.39–40) 4th and 11th | Benefic 6th and 9th | Mixed |
| Kumbh (Aquarius) | Malefic · Maraka— lord of the 3rd and 10th, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.41–42) 3rd and 10th | Neutral— gives mixed results (34.42) 5th and 8th | Leans hard |
| Meen (Pisces) | Benefic · Yoga— gives yoga together with Guru (34.44)— also named a killer, though not one who kills on his own (34.44) 2nd and 9th | Malefic · Maraka 4th and 7th | Mixed |
“Together” reads Mangal and Budh side by side: both favourable is Favourable; one favourable and one neutral, Leans favourable; one each way, Mixed; one hard and one neutral, Leans hard; both hard, Hard; both neutral, Placement decides. A Yoga pair is two grahas Parashara names together for that lagna. “Lagna lord” and “Mildly malefic” are the verse’s own words, neither favourable nor hard, and count as neutral here.
One kundli that meets Mangal–Budh at 49, read the way the report reads yours
From the Janam Kundli report
Mangal rules your 2nd house and 7th house and sits in your 7th house: this period brings those matters forward — the money at hand, the family, and speech; the spouse, partners, and those one deals with. Mixed — a kendra or trikona and strong in its sign; on the other side: short of Shadbala and in an enemy's sign in the navamsa.
In this kundli it runs 13 November 2039 – 10 November 2040, from the age of 49 to 50. Its length here can differ from the one above by a day, because each kundli’s dates round to the day.
Budh: rules your 9th house and 12th house, sits in your 10th house. It brings fortune, the father, teachers, and long travel; spending, sleep, foreign places, and what is given away. Mixed — a kendra or trikona, lord of a trikona and well placed from Mangal; on the other side: short of Shadbala, in an enemy's sign and combust.
Shadbala: the six-fold measure of a graha’s strength the report computes; “short of Shadbala” means below the strength the texts ask of it. Navamsa: the ninth-division chart, read for a graha’s inner strength. Combust: so close to the Sun that its strength is lost in the Sun’s rays.
Mangal–Budh divides into nine pratyantars from Budh’s own on. Each length is counted between the dates beside it, and comes out the same in any kundli give or take a day; the dates and readings are this one’s.
| Pratyantar | Length | In this kundli | The report reads |
|---|---|---|---|
| Budh | 1 month 22 days | 13 November 2039 – 4 January 2040 | Care |
| Ketu | 21 days | 4 January 2040 – 25 January 2040 | Mixed |
| Shukra | 2 months | 25 January 2040 – 25 March 2040 | Mixed |
| Surya | 18 days | 25 March 2040 – 12 April 2040 | Opens |
| Chandra | 1 month 1 day | 12 April 2040 – 13 May 2040 | Mixed |
| Mangal | 21 days | 13 May 2040 – 3 June 2040 | Mixed |
| Rahu | 1 month 24 days | 3 June 2040 – 27 July 2040 | Opens |
| Guru | 1 month 17 days | 27 July 2040 – 13 September 2040 | Care |
| Shani | 1 month 28 days | 13 September 2040 – 10 November 2040 | Mixed |

Suggestions for Budh’s months, which your kundli confirms
Parashara gives Mangal–Budh a remedy of its own (BPHS 54.46–47), set out above under “Parashara’s remedy”; it comes first.
ॐ ब्रां ब्रीं ब्रौं सः बुधाय नमः
Daan: green moong and green cloth, on Wednesday
What helps and what to keep clear of in any Budh period: Budh mahadasha. Its vrat, ratna, stotra and puja: Budh upay.
11 months 27 days (362 days): Mangal’s 7 years × Budh’s 17 years ÷ 120. It begins 3 years 6 months after a Mangal mahadasha starts.
Not in advance: it turns on your lagna and on where Mangal and Budh sit in your kundli. By Parashara’s lists it is strongest for Dhanu (Sagittarius) lagna. By nature the friendship is uneven: Mangal sees Budh as an enemy, and Budh sees Mangal as neutral. On the Tula lagna kundli above, the Janam Kundli report reads it as “Mixed”, as its chip above says.
Nine, in the order Budh, Ketu, Shukra, Surya, Chandra, Mangal, Rahu, Guru, Shani. Each is Mangal–Budh’s length × the pratyantar lord’s years ÷ 120, so the longest is Shukra’s, about 2 months, and the shortest Surya’s, about 18 days.
Parashara gives this antardasha a remedy of its own (BPHS 54.46–47), set out above under “Parashara’s remedy”. The Budh beej mantra, Om Braam Breem Braum Sah Budhaya Namah, and a daan of green moong and green cloth on Wednesday are the everyday upay for Mangal–Budh, where your kundli shows the need.
