What Budh brings to its own antardasha

Every mahadasha opens with its own lord’s antardasha. For these months Budh rules both levels alone, so its matters show at their plainest.

What Parashara says

Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 58, verses 1–5

Parashara reads Budh’s own antardasha by where Budh sits from the lagna and by what it rules; your kundli shows which line is yours, and though the text speaks of a man, its results apply to anyone.

When it goes well

  • When Budh (Mercury) is in his exaltation sign (uchcha rashi, where a graha is strongest) or is otherwise well placed, BPHS gives gains of gems such as pearls, learning, growing happiness, pious deeds, success in studies, name and fame, meetings with new people in authority, and wealth and happiness through the spouse, children and parents.BPHS 58.1–3½

When it is hard

  • When Budh is in his debilitation sign (neecha rashi, where a graha is weakest) or a similar weak placement, or is in the 6th, 8th or 12th house, or is with malefic grahas, BPHS warns of loss of wealth and livestock, friction with relatives, and illnesses such as stomach pain.BPHS 58.1–3½

Parashara’s remedy

For relief from these difficulties, BPHS prescribes reciting the Vishnu Sahasranama, the thousand names of Vishnu.

BPHS 58.5

A caution: When Budh rules your 2nd or 7th house, BPHS counts this a maraka period (one the texts link with danger to life). It warns of distress to the spouse, the death of members of the family, and illnesses such as rheumatism and stomach pain, and asks for care with health. BPHS 58.4–5

Budh’s own antardasha for your lagna

What Budh is for each lagna, as Parashara lists it

Budh is favourable for Kanya (Virgo), Tula (Libra), Dhanu (Sagittarius), Makar (Capricorn) lagna. Budh is hard for Mesh (Aries), Kark (Cancer), Singh (Leo), Vrishchik (Scorpio), Meen (Pisces) lagna, where the period asks for the most care. For Vrishabh (Taurus), Mithun (Gemini), Kumbh (Aquarius) lagna Budh is neutral, and where it sits decides the period.

The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:

  • Yogakaraka: the strongest graha a lagna can have: the one Parashara names as bringing yoga, or the one lord of both a kendra (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) and a trikona (1st, 5th, 9th) (34.13)
  • Benefic, Malefic, Neutral: works for the lagna; brings its harder matters; neither
  • Lagna lord: the lagna’s own graha, where the verse calls it neither good nor hard
  • Maraka: a killer Parashara names for the lagna, watched for health and longevity; printed alone, or after another label. It is not always the lord of the 2nd or 7th: where it differs, the line under it gives the verse
  • · Yoga: one of two grahas he says give yoga together for this lagna

A favourable Budh gives its own antardasha readily, a hard one asks for care, and a neutral one leaves it to where Budh sits. “Lagna lord” and “Mildly malefic” are the verse’s own words, neither favourable nor hard, and count as neutral here.

Budh rules your 7th house and 10th house and sits in your 1st house: this period brings those matters forward — the spouse, partners, and those one deals with; work, standing, and those senior to you. Mixed — a kendra or trikona; on the other side: short of Shadbala.

Budh antardasha Mixed

In this kundli it runs 21 August 2034 – 17 January 2037, from the age of 50 to 52. Its length here can differ from the one above by a day, because each kundli’s dates round to the day.
