How the two grahas get on

Chandra counts Budh a friend, and Budh counts Chandra an enemy. That natural relationship is where reading a Chandra–Budh period starts; where Chandra and Budh sit in your kundli decides what it brings.

What Parashara says

Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 53, verses 39–46

Parashara reads Budh’s antardasha in Chandra’s mahadasha by where Budh sits, counted from the lagna and from Chandra, and by what it rules; your kundli shows which line is yours, and though the text speaks of a man, its results apply to anyone.

When it goes well

  • When Budh is strong and is in a kendra (the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house) or a trikona (the 1st, 5th or 9th house), or in his own sign, his own navamsa (his own place in the ninth-division chart) or his sign of exaltation, BPHS gives gains of wealth, recognition from those in power, gains of clothes, discussion of the shastras, knowledge gained in the company of learned and holy people, enjoyment, the birth of children, contentment, profit in business, and gains of vehicles and ornaments.BPHS 53.39–41
  • When Budh is in a kendra (the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house) or a trikona (the 1st, 5th or 9th house), or in the 11th or 2nd, counted from Chandra, the lord of the mahadasha, BPHS gives marriage, yagya (offerings into the sacred fire), charity, religious rites, closeness to those in power, the company of learned people, gains of pearls, coral, gems, vehicles, clothes and ornaments, good health, affection, enjoyment, and fine drinks and delicacies.BPHS 53.42–43½

When it is hard

  • When Budh is in the 6th, 8th or 12th from Chandra, the lord of the mahadasha, or is debilitated (in his sign of weakness), BPHS warns of bodily pain, losses in farming, risk of imprisonment, and distress to spouse and children.BPHS 53.44–46

Parashara’s remedy

For relief, BPHS prescribes reciting the Vishnu Sahasranama and giving a goat in charity.

BPHS 53.44–46

A caution: When Budh rules your 2nd or 7th house (the maraka houses, which the texts link with danger to life), BPHS warns of fever and asks for care with health. BPHS 53.44–46

Chandra–Budh for your lagna

What Chandra and Budh are for each lagna, as Parashara lists them, and the two read together

For Tula (Libra) lagna, Parashara names Chandra and Budh together as givers of yoga (34.34): the strongest this pair can be. Both are hard for Singh (Leo) lagna, where the period asks for the most care. For Kark (Cancer), Kanya (Virgo), Vrishchik (Scorpio), Makar (Capricorn), Meen (Pisces) lagna one is good and the other hard, so the period is mixed. Where one of the two is neutral, the other decides the lean: towards good for Dhanu (Sagittarius) and towards hard for Mesh (Aries), Vrishabh (Taurus), Mithun (Gemini), Kumbh (Aquarius).

The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:

  • Yogakaraka: the strongest graha a lagna can have: the one Parashara names as bringing yoga, or the one lord of both a kendra (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) and a trikona (1st, 5th, 9th) (34.13)
  • Benefic, Malefic, Neutral: works for the lagna; brings its harder matters; neither
  • Lagna lord: the lagna’s own graha, where the verse calls it neither good nor hard
  • Maraka: a killer Parashara names for the lagna, watched for health and longevity; printed alone, or after another label. It is not always the lord of the 2nd or 7th: where it differs, the line under it gives the verse
  • · Yoga: one of two grahas he says give yoga together for this lagna

A Yoga pair is two grahas Parashara names together for that lagna. “Lagna lord” and “Mildly malefic” are the verse’s own words, neither favourable nor hard, and count as neutral here.

From the Janam Kundli report

Chandra mahadasha Care

Chandra rules your 10th house and sits in your 6th house: this period brings those matters forward — work, standing, and those senior to you. Go carefully — a difficult house and short of Shadbala; on the other side: vargottama.

Budh antardasha Mixed

In this kundli it runs 14 March 2032 – 14 August 2033, from the age of 41 to 43. Its length here can differ from the one above by a day, because each kundli’s dates round to the day.

Budh: rules your 9th house and 12th house, sits in your 10th house. It brings fortune, the father, teachers, and long travel; spending, sleep, foreign places, and what is given away. Mixed — a kendra or trikona, lord of a trikona and well placed from Chandra; on the other side: short of Shadbala, in an enemy's sign and combust.

Shadbala: the six-fold measure of a graha’s strength the report computes; “short of Shadbala” means below the strength the texts ask of it. Vargottama: in the same rashi in the birth chart and in the navamsa, which strengthens a graha. Combust: so close to the Sun that its strength is lost in the Sun’s rays.

Its nine pratyantars

Chandra–Budh divides into nine pratyantars from Budh’s own on. Each length is counted between the dates beside it, and comes out the same in any kundli give or take a day; the dates and readings are this one’s.

Common questions

How long is Chandra mahadasha Budh antardasha?

1 year 5 months (517 days): Chandra’s 10 years × Budh’s 17 years ÷ 120. It begins 5 years 10 months after a Chandra mahadasha starts.

Is Chandra mahadasha Budh antardasha good or bad?

Not in advance: it turns on your lagna and on where Chandra and Budh sit in your kundli. By Parashara’s lists it is strongest for Tula (Libra) lagna. It is hardest for Singh (Leo) lagna. By nature the friendship is uneven: Chandra sees Budh as a friend, and Budh sees Chandra as an enemy. On the Tula lagna kundli above, the Janam Kundli report reads it as “Mixed”, as its chip above says.

What are the pratyantars of Chandra mahadasha Budh antardasha?

Nine, in the order Budh, Ketu, Shukra, Surya, Chandra, Mangal, Rahu, Guru, Shani. Each is Chandra–Budh’s length × the pratyantar lord’s years ÷ 120, so the longest is Shukra’s, about 2 months 25 days, and the shortest Surya’s, about 26 days.

What upay helps in Budh antardasha?

Parashara gives this antardasha a remedy of its own (BPHS 53.44–46), set out above under “Parashara’s remedy”. The Budh beej mantra, Om Braam Breem Braum Sah Budhaya Namah, and a daan of green moong and green cloth on Wednesday are the everyday upay for Chandra–Budh, where your kundli shows the need.
