How the two grahas get on

What Parashara says

Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 60, verses 60–66

Parashara reads Budh’s antardasha in Shukra’s mahadasha by where Budh sits, counted from the lagna and from Shukra, and by what it rules; your kundli shows which line is yours, and though the text speaks of a man, its results apply to anyone.

When it goes well

  • When Budh (Mercury) is in a kendra (the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house), a trikona (the 1st, 5th or 9th house) or the 11th, counted from the lagna (ascendant) or from Shukra (Venus), the mahadasha lord, or is in his exaltation or own sign, BPHS gives a rise in fortune, the birth of a son, gains of wealth through a court judgement, listening to stories from the Puranas, the company of people skilled in poetry, visits from close friends, happiness from one's employer, and sweet foods.BPHS 60.60–62

When it is hard

  • When Budh (Mercury) is in the 6th, 8th or 12th, counted from Shukra (Venus), the mahadasha lord, or is weak, or is joined by a malefic graha, BPHS warns of anguish, loss of livestock, living in other people's houses and losses in business. It sees some good at the start, middling results in the middle, and distress from fever and the like at the end.BPHS 60.63–65

Parashara’s remedy

For relief, BPHS prescribes reciting the Vishnu Sahasranama, the thousand names of Vishnu.

BPHS 60.66

A caution: When Budh rules your 2nd or 7th house (the maraka houses, which the texts link with danger to life), BPHS warns of physical distress and asks for care with health. BPHS 60.66

Shukra–Budh for your lagna

What Shukra and Budh are for each lagna, as Parashara lists them, and the two read together

For Kanya (Virgo) lagna, Parashara names Shukra and Budh together as givers of yoga (34.32): the strongest this pair can be. Both are favourable for Makar (Capricorn) lagna. Both are hard for Mesh (Aries), Kark (Cancer), Singh (Leo), Vrishchik (Scorpio), Meen (Pisces) lagna, where the period asks for the most care. For Dhanu (Sagittarius) lagna one is good and the other hard, so the period is mixed. Where one of the two is neutral, the other decides the lean: towards good for Mithun (Gemini), Tula (Libra), Kumbh (Aquarius) and towards hard for Vrishabh (Taurus).

The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:

  • Yogakaraka: the strongest graha a lagna can have: the one Parashara names as bringing yoga, or the one lord of both a kendra (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) and a trikona (1st, 5th, 9th) (34.13)
  • Benefic, Malefic, Neutral: works for the lagna; brings its harder matters; neither
  • Lagna lord: the lagna’s own graha, where the verse calls it neither good nor hard
  • Maraka: a killer Parashara names for the lagna, watched for health and longevity; printed alone, or after another label. It is not always the lord of the 2nd or 7th: where it differs, the line under it gives the verse
  • · Yoga: one of two grahas he says give yoga together for this lagna

From the Janam Kundli report

Shukra mahadasha Mixed

Shukra rules your 6th house and 11th house and sits in your 1st house: this period brings those matters forward — illness, debt, disputes, and thankless work; income, gains, elder siblings, and friends who help. Mixed — a kendra or trikona and strong in the navamsa; on the other side: short of Shadbala.

Budh antardasha Mixed

In this kundli it runs 21 August 2074 – 21 June 2077, from the age of 90 to 93. Its length here can differ from the one above by a day, because each kundli’s dates round to the day.

Budh: rules your 7th house and 10th house, sits in your 1st house. It brings the spouse, partners, and those one deals with; work, standing, and those senior to you. Mixed — a kendra or trikona; on the other side: short of Shadbala.

Shadbala: the six-fold measure of a graha’s strength the report computes; “short of Shadbala” means below the strength the texts ask of it. Navamsa: the ninth-division chart, read for a graha’s inner strength.

Its nine pratyantars

Shukra–Budh divides into nine pratyantars from Budh’s own on. Each length is counted between the dates beside it, and comes out the same in any kundli give or take a day; the dates and readings are this one’s.
