What Guru gives in the 2nd house by Lal Kitab and by Phaladeepika, its upay, the houses it looks at from there, and what it means for each lagna.
Jupiter in the 2nd house (pakka ghar, the house Lal Kitab gives a graha as its own, where it is steadiest) gives immense family wealth, sweet speech, and a generous nature. It is a very strong position.
Lal Kitab reads Guru in the 2nd house by the house, not by your lagna; Parashara’s view for your own lagna is further down, and Phaladeepika and Brihat Jataka may differ. How Lal Kitab and Parashara differ · Lal Kitab: pakka ghar, rin and upay
Offer saffron at a temple. Keep turmeric root in your pocket.
This is Lal Kitab’s one upay for Guru in the 2nd house, to keep its good results strong; it is a suggestion, and your whole kundli may call for another. All upay for Guru
Phaladeepika 8.14 holds that Guru (Jupiter) in the 2nd house (the house of wealth and speech) gives eloquence, a pleasant face, wealth and learning. The text adds a refined taste in food.
How much of this holds turns on the rest of the chart: the rashi Guru sits in, the 2nd house’s lord and the grahas with it or looking at it. The old texts speak of a man; their readings apply to anyone.
BJ 20.7: Guru in the 2nd gives eloquence, a sweet tongue.
Its results show most in Guru’s own mahadasha (16 years) and in its antardashas inside the others. The 2nd house’s matters also come forward in the periods of the house’s lord, which depends on your lagna.
Its drishti (a graha’s glance: the houses it looks at feel its influence) from the 2nd, by the rules our kundli reading weighs houses with:
The 2nd house, Dhana bhava, rules money saved, family, speech and food; it is a maraka house (literally “killer”: a graha or house watched in matters of health and longevity); its karaka (the graha that naturally signifies a house’s matters, whatever the lagna) is Guru. The 2nd house, and every graha in it
| Lagna | Guru sits in | Its state there | Lord of your | For this lagna |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mesh (Aries) | Vrishabh (Taurus) | Enemy | 9th and 12th | Benefic |
| Vrishabh (Taurus) | Mithun (Gemini) | Enemy | 8th and 11th | Malefic · Maraka— lord of the 8th and 11th, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.23–24) |
| Mithun (Gemini) | Kark (Cancer) | Exalted | 7th and 10th | Malefic— lord of the 7th, but the killer the verse names for this lagna is Chandra (34.25–26) |
| Kark (Cancer) | Singh (Leo) | Friendly | 6th and 9th | Benefic |
| Singh (Leo) | Kanya (Virgo) | Enemy | 5th and 8th | Benefic |
| Kanya (Virgo) | Tula (Libra) | Enemy | 4th and 7th | Malefic— lord of the 7th, but the killer the verse names for this lagna is Shukra (34.31–32) |
| Tula (Libra) | Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Friendly | 3rd and 6th | Malefic · Maraka— lord of the 3rd and 6th, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.33–34) |
| Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Own rashi | 2nd and 5th | Benefic— lord of the 2nd, but the killer the verse names for this lagna is Shukra (34.35–36) |
| Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Makar (Capricorn) | Debilitated | 1st and 4th | Neutral— the lagna lord, which the verse calls neutral (34.38) |
| Makar (Capricorn) | Kumbh (Aquarius) | Neutral | 3rd and 12th | Malefic |
| Kumbh (Aquarius) | Meen (Pisces) | Own rashi | 2nd and 11th | Malefic · Maraka |
| Meen (Pisces) | Mesh (Aries) | Friendly | 1st and 10th | Benefic · Yoga— gives yoga together with Mangal (34.44) |
Guru’s state in each rashi, and the houses it rules for each lagna, as our free kundli reads them (BPHS chapter 34); each house links to what Parashara says of its lord sitting in the 2nd. “Its state there” is how that rashi treats Guru: exalted, own, friendly, neutral (sam), enemy or debilitated. “For this lagna” is Parashara’s verdict on the houses it rules. The two answer different questions.
The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:
Take Mesh lagna. Guru sits in Vrishabh there (enemy) and rules your 9th and 12th houses, which makes it a benefic for Mesh lagna (BPHS 34). The two pull apart: the label says what it does for this lagna, the rashi how much strength it has to do it, so it gives less of that good than its label promises. The Lal Kitab reading above is the same for every lagna; this row is the part that changes with yours.
By Brihat Jataka 20.11, Guru in the 2nd house gives its good in full for Mithun lagna, half for Vrishchik and Kumbh lagna, a quarter for Kark, Tula and Meen lagna, little for Mesh, Vrishabh, Singh and Kanya lagna and none for Dhanu lagna, by the rashi it sits in. The verse gives no share for a neutral rashi, which is where it sits for Makar lagna. BJ 20.10–11
Not the birth placement above: here Guru is moving through the 2nd counted from your Moon rashi. Phaladeepika counts the 2nd among Guru’s good transit houses (all twelve, on the Guru page). Our Monthly Prediction reads it as very good: wealth, happiness in the family, good speech, big gains.
Lal Kitab counts it a good placement, one of the 7 houses where Guru does well (with the 1st, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th). By its rashi, it is strongest for Mithun, Vrishchik and Kumbh lagna; it is debilitated for Dhanu lagna.
Lal Kitab’s upay for it: Offer saffron at a temple; keep turmeric root in your pocket.
The 6th (illness), 8th (longevity) and 10th (career).
