What Guru gives in the 4th house by Lal Kitab and by Phaladeepika, its upay, the houses it looks at from there, and what it means for each lagna.
Jupiter in the 4th house gives property, vehicles, domestic happiness, and a mother's care.
In a kendra (one of the four angles of the chart, the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th houses, where a graha acts with most force), in Dhanu (Sagittarius), Meen (Pisces) or Kark (Cancer), Guru forms Hamsa Yoga, one of the five Pancha Mahapurusha (“great person”) yogas of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra. The table below marks the lagnas where that happens.
Lal Kitab reads Guru in the 4th house by the house, not by your lagna; Parashara’s view for your own lagna is further down, and Phaladeepika and Brihat Jataka may differ. How Lal Kitab and Parashara differ · Lal Kitab: pakka ghar, rin and upay
Apply saffron or turmeric tilak. Offer bananas at a temple.
This is Lal Kitab’s one upay for Guru in the 4th house, to keep its good results strong; it is a suggestion, and your whole kundli may call for another. All upay for Guru
Phaladeepika 8.14 holds that Guru (Jupiter) in the 4th house (the house of home, mother and comforts) brings a happy life lived together with mother, friends, helpers, children and spouse. The text adds plenty of grain and the like in the home.
How much of this holds turns on the rest of the chart: the rashi Guru sits in, the 4th house’s lord and the grahas with it or looking at it. The old texts speak of a man; their readings apply to anyone.
BJ 20.7: Guru in the 4th gives happiness.
Its results show most in Guru’s own mahadasha (16 years) and in its antardashas inside the others. The 4th house’s matters also come forward in the periods of the house’s lord, which depends on your lagna.
Its drishti (a graha’s glance: the houses it looks at feel its influence) from the 4th, by the rules our kundli reading weighs houses with:
The 4th house, Sukha bhava, rules mother, home, property, vehicles and peace of mind; it is a kendra; its karaka (the graha that naturally signifies a house’s matters, whatever the lagna) is Chandra. The 4th house, and every graha in it
| Lagna | Guru sits in | Its state there | Lord of your | For this lagna |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mesh (Aries) | Kark (Cancer) | Exalted · Hamsa Yoga | 9th and 12th | Benefic |
| Vrishabh (Taurus) | Singh (Leo) | Friendly | 8th and 11th | Malefic · Maraka— lord of the 8th and 11th, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.23–24) |
| Mithun (Gemini) | Kanya (Virgo) | Enemy | 7th and 10th | Malefic— lord of the 7th, but the killer the verse names for this lagna is Chandra (34.25–26) |
| Kark (Cancer) | Tula (Libra) | Enemy | 6th and 9th | Benefic |
| Singh (Leo) | Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Friendly | 5th and 8th | Benefic |
| Kanya (Virgo) | Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Own rashi · Hamsa Yoga | 4th and 7th | Malefic— lord of the 7th, but the killer the verse names for this lagna is Shukra (34.31–32) |
| Tula (Libra) | Makar (Capricorn) | Debilitated | 3rd and 6th | Malefic · Maraka— lord of the 3rd and 6th, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.33–34) |
| Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Kumbh (Aquarius) | Neutral | 2nd and 5th | Benefic— lord of the 2nd, but the killer the verse names for this lagna is Shukra (34.35–36) |
| Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Meen (Pisces) | Own rashi · Hamsa Yoga | 1st and 4th | Neutral— the lagna lord, which the verse calls neutral (34.38) |
| Makar (Capricorn) | Mesh (Aries) | Friendly | 3rd and 12th | Malefic |
| Kumbh (Aquarius) | Vrishabh (Taurus) | Enemy | 2nd and 11th | Malefic · Maraka |
| Meen (Pisces) | Mithun (Gemini) | Enemy | 1st and 10th | Benefic · Yoga— gives yoga together with Mangal (34.44) |
Guru’s state in each rashi, and the houses it rules for each lagna, as our free kundli reads them (BPHS chapter 34); each house links to what Parashara says of its lord sitting in the 4th. “Its state there” is how that rashi treats Guru: exalted, own, friendly, neutral (sam), enemy or debilitated. “For this lagna” is Parashara’s verdict on the houses it rules. The two answer different questions.
The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:
Take Kark lagna. Guru sits in Tula there (enemy) and rules your 6th and 9th houses, which makes it a benefic for Kark lagna (BPHS 34). The two pull apart: the label says what it does for this lagna, the rashi how much strength it has to do it, so it gives less of that good than its label promises. The Lal Kitab reading above is the same for every lagna; this row is the part that changes with yours.
By Brihat Jataka 20.11, Guru in the 4th house gives its good in full for Mesh lagna, half for Kanya and Dhanu lagna, a quarter for Vrishabh, Singh and Makar lagna, little for Mithun, Kark, Kumbh and Meen lagna and none for Tula lagna, by the rashi it sits in. The verse gives no share for a neutral rashi, which is where it sits for Vrishchik lagna. BJ 20.10–11
Not the birth placement above: here Guru is moving through the 4th counted from your Moon rashi. Phaladeepika does not count the 4th among Guru’s good transit houses (all twelve, on the Guru page). Our Monthly Prediction reads it as mixed: the home grows, study, some adjusting at home.
Lal Kitab counts it a good placement, one of the 7 houses where Guru does well (with the 1st, 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th). By its rashi, it is strongest for Mesh, Kanya and Dhanu lagna; it is debilitated for Tula lagna.
Lal Kitab’s upay for it: Apply saffron or turmeric tilak; offer bananas at a temple.
The 8th (longevity), 10th (career) and 12th (expenses).
