What Surya gives in the 2nd house by Lal Kitab and by Phaladeepika, its upay, the houses it looks at from there, and what it means for each lagna.
The Sun in the 2nd house can harm family wealth and create disputes with the father. The eyes, especially the right eye, may be weak.
Lal Kitab reads Surya in the 2nd house by the house, not by your lagna; Parashara’s view for your own lagna is further down, and Phaladeepika and Brihat Jataka may differ. How Lal Kitab and Parashara differ · Lal Kitab: pakka ghar, rin and upay

This is Lal Kitab’s one upay for Surya in the 2nd house, offered to ease its harder side; it is a suggestion, and your whole kundli may call for another. All upay for Surya
Phaladeepika 8.2 holds that Surya (Sun) in the 2nd house (the house of wealth and speech) leaves a person short of learning, modesty and money. The text adds a halting, stammering speech.
How much of this holds turns on the rest of the chart: the rashi Surya sits in, the 2nd house’s lord and the grahas with it or looking at it. The old texts speak of a man; their readings apply to anyone.
BJ 20.1: the Sun in the 2nd gives great wealth, but warns that the state (the king, in the text) may take it away, and of ailments of the face.
Its results show most in Surya’s own mahadasha (6 years) and in its antardashas inside the others. The 2nd house’s matters also come forward in the periods of the house’s lord, which depends on your lagna.
Its drishti (a graha’s glance: the houses it looks at feel its influence) from the 2nd, by the rules our kundli reading weighs houses with:
The 2nd house, Dhana bhava, rules money saved, family, speech and food; it is a maraka house (literally “killer”: a graha or house watched in matters of health and longevity); its karaka (the graha that naturally signifies a house’s matters, whatever the lagna) is Guru. The 2nd house, and every graha in it
| Lagna | Surya sits in | Its state there | Lord of your | For this lagna |

| Mesh (Aries) | Vrishabh (Taurus) | Enemy | 5th | Benefic |
| Vrishabh (Taurus) | Mithun (Gemini) | Neutral | 4th | Benefic |
| Mithun (Gemini) | Kark (Cancer) | Friendly | 3rd | Malefic |
| Kark (Cancer) | Singh (Leo) | Own rashi | 2nd | Maraka |
| Singh (Leo) | Kanya (Virgo) | Neutral | 1st | Benefic |

| Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Friendly | 10th | Yogakaraka— as the verse names it, together with Chandra, the 9th lord (34.35–36) |
| Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Makar (Capricorn) | Enemy | 9th | Benefic · Yoga— gives yoga together with Budh (34.38) |
| Makar (Capricorn) | Kumbh (Aquarius) | Enemy | 8th | Neutral |
| Kumbh (Aquarius) | Meen (Pisces) | Friendly | 7th | Maraka |
| Meen (Pisces) | Mesh (Aries) | Exalted | 6th | Malefic |
Surya’s state in each rashi, and the houses it rules for each lagna, as our free kundli reads them (BPHS chapter 34); each house links to what Parashara says of its lord sitting in the 2nd. “Its state there” is how that rashi treats Surya: exalted, own, friendly, neutral (sam), enemy or debilitated. “For this lagna” is Parashara’s verdict on the houses it rules. The two answer different questions.
The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:
Take Mesh lagna. Surya sits in Vrishabh there (enemy) and rules your 5th house, which makes it a benefic for Mesh lagna (BPHS 34). The two pull apart: the label says what it does for this lagna, the rashi how much strength it has to do it, so it gives less of that good than its label promises. The Lal Kitab reading above is the same for every lagna; this row is the part that changes with yours.
Brihat Jataka 20.11 grades how much of its good a graha gives by the rashi it sits in. For a malefic like Surya the translator reverses the scale and the commentators differ, so read Surya in the 2nd house by Parashara’s table above. BJ 20.10–11
Not the birth placement above: here Surya is moving through the 2nd counted from your Moon rashi. Phaladeepika does not count the 2nd among Surya’s good transit houses (all twelve, on the Surya page). Our Monthly Prediction reads it as challenging: money feels tight, family matters and harsh words, but it is manageable.
Lal Kitab counts it a hard placement; Surya does well in the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 6th, 9th, 10th and 11th. By its rashi, it is strongest for Kark and Meen lagna; it is debilitated for Kanya lagna.
