What Shani gives in the 2nd house by Lal Kitab and by Phaladeepika, its upay, the houses it looks at from there, and what it means for each lagna.
Saturn in the 2nd house causes family disputes, delayed wealth, and harsh or slow speech.
Lal Kitab reads Shani in the 2nd house by the house, not by your lagna; Parashara’s view for your own lagna is further down, and Phaladeepika and Brihat Jataka may differ. How Lal Kitab and Parashara differ · Lal Kitab: pakka ghar, rin and upay
Keep a dark-coloured vessel filled with mustard oil at home. Feed crows.
This is Lal Kitab’s one upay for Shani in the 2nd house, offered to ease its harder side; it is a suggestion, and your whole kundli may call for another. All upay for Shani
Phaladeepika 8.21 holds that Shani (Saturn) in the 2nd house (the house of wealth and speech) gives an unattractive face, little wealth and a pull towards wrong ways. The text adds that later in life the person settles in a foreign land and gains vehicles, wealth and comforts there.
How much of this holds turns on the rest of the chart: the rashi Shani sits in, the 2nd house’s lord and the grahas with it or looking at it. The old texts speak of a man; their readings apply to anyone.
BJ 20.9 gives Shani in the 2nd the same result as the Sun there (20.1): great wealth, though the state may take it away, and ailments of the face.
Its results show most in Shani’s own mahadasha (19 years) and in its antardashas inside the others. The 2nd house’s matters also come forward in the periods of the house’s lord, which depends on your lagna.
Its drishti (a graha’s glance: the houses it looks at feel its influence) from the 2nd, by the rules our kundli reading weighs houses with:
The 2nd house, Dhana bhava, rules money saved, family, speech and food; it is a maraka house (literally “killer”: a graha or house watched in matters of health and longevity); its karaka (the graha that naturally signifies a house’s matters, whatever the lagna) is Guru. The 2nd house, and every graha in it
| Lagna | Shani sits in | Its state there | Lord of your | For this lagna |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mesh (Aries) | Vrishabh (Taurus) | Friendly | 10th and 11th | Malefic |
| Vrishabh (Taurus) | Mithun (Gemini) | Friendly | 9th and 10th | Yogakaraka |
| Mithun (Gemini) | Kark (Cancer) | Enemy | 8th and 9th | Neutral |
| Kark (Cancer) | Singh (Leo) | Enemy | 7th and 8th | Maraka |
| Singh (Leo) | Kanya (Virgo) | Friendly | 6th and 7th | Malefic · Maraka |
| Kanya (Virgo) | Tula (Libra) | Exalted | 5th and 6th | Neutral |
| Tula (Libra) | Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Enemy | 4th and 5th | Yogakaraka |
| Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Neutral | 3rd and 4th | Malefic |
| Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Makar (Capricorn) | Own rashi | 2nd and 3rd | Maraka |
| Makar (Capricorn) | Kumbh (Aquarius) | Own rashi | 1st and 2nd | Neutral— the lagna lord; not a killer on his own, the verse says (34.39) |
| Kumbh (Aquarius) | Meen (Pisces) | Neutral | 1st and 12th | Benefic— the lagna lord, and one the verse itself names auspicious for Kumbh (34.41) |
| Meen (Pisces) | Mesh (Aries) | Debilitated | 11th and 12th | Malefic · Maraka— lord of the 11th and 12th, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.43–44) |
Shani’s state in each rashi, and the houses it rules for each lagna, as our free kundli reads them (BPHS chapter 34); each house links to what Parashara says of its lord sitting in the 2nd. “Its state there” is how that rashi treats Shani: exalted, own, friendly, neutral (sam), enemy or debilitated. “For this lagna” is Parashara’s verdict on the houses it rules. The two answer different questions.
The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:
Take Tula lagna. Shani sits in Vrishchik there (enemy) and rules your 4th and 5th houses, which makes it a yogakaraka for Tula lagna (BPHS 34). The two pull apart: the label says what it does for this lagna, the rashi how much strength it has to do it, so it gives less of that good than its label promises. Its drishti falls on the 4th house, which it rules for this lagna, so there the glance is not counted against it. The Lal Kitab reading above is the same for every lagna; this row is the part that changes with yours.
Brihat Jataka 20.11 grades how much of its good a graha gives by the rashi it sits in. For a malefic like Shani the translator reverses the scale and the commentators differ, so read Shani in the 2nd house by Parashara’s table above. BJ 20.10–11
Not the birth placement above: here Shani is moving through the 2nd counted from your Moon rashi. Phaladeepika does not count the 2nd among Shani’s good transit houses (all twelve, on the Shani page). Our Monthly Prediction reads it as difficult: careful spending, family duties, measured words. This transit is the setting phase of Sade Sati: Shani’s seven and a half years over the 12th, 1st and 2nd from the Moon.
Lal Kitab counts it a hard placement; Shani does well in the 3rd, 6th, 7th, 8th, 10th and 11th. By its rashi, it is strongest for Kanya, Dhanu and Makar lagna; it is debilitated for Meen lagna.
Lal Kitab’s upay for it: Keep a dark-coloured vessel filled with mustard oil at home; feed crows.
The 4th (mother), 8th (longevity) and 11th (income).
