What Chandra gives in the 2nd house by Lal Kitab and by Phaladeepika, its upay, the houses it looks at from there, and what it means for each lagna.
The Moon in the 2nd house gives wealth, family happiness, and beautiful eyes. It is very favourable for financial gains.
Lal Kitab reads Chandra in the 2nd house by the house, not by your lagna; Parashara’s view for your own lagna is further down, and Phaladeepika and Brihat Jataka may differ. How Lal Kitab and Parashara differ · Lal Kitab: pakka ghar, rin and upay
Keep silver items and rice at home.
This is Lal Kitab’s one upay for Chandra in the 2nd house, to keep its good results strong; it is a suggestion, and your whole kundli may call for another. All upay for Chandra
Phaladeepika 8.5 holds that Chandra (Moon) in the 2nd house (the house of wealth and speech) makes a person rich, and either very learned or gentle of speech. The text adds a love of pleasure and some defect in a limb.
How much of this holds turns on the rest of the chart: the rashi Chandra sits in, the 2nd house’s lord and the grahas with it or looking at it. The old texts speak of a man; their readings apply to anyone.
BJ 20.4: the Moon in the 2nd gives a large family.
Its results show most in Chandra’s own mahadasha (10 years) and in its antardashas inside the others. The 2nd house’s matters also come forward in the periods of the house’s lord, which depends on your lagna.
Its drishti (a graha’s glance: the houses it looks at feel its influence) from the 2nd, by the rules our kundli reading weighs houses with:
The 2nd house, Dhana bhava, rules money saved, family, speech and food; it is a maraka house (literally “killer”: a graha or house watched in matters of health and longevity); its karaka (the graha that naturally signifies a house’s matters, whatever the lagna) is Guru. The 2nd house, and every graha in it
| Lagna | Chandra sits in | Its state there | Lord of your | For this lagna |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mesh (Aries) | Vrishabh (Taurus) | Exalted | 4th | Neutral |
| Vrishabh (Taurus) | Mithun (Gemini) | Friendly | 3rd | Malefic · Maraka— lord of the 3rd only, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.23–24) |
| Mithun (Gemini) | Kark (Cancer) | Own rashi | 2nd | Maraka |
| Kark (Cancer) | Singh (Leo) | Friendly | 1st | Benefic |
| Singh (Leo) | Kanya (Virgo) | Friendly | 12th | Maraka— lord of the 12th only, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.29–30) |
| Kanya (Virgo) | Tula (Libra) | Neutral | 11th | Malefic |
| Tula (Libra) | Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Debilitated | 10th | Neutral · Yoga— gives yoga together with Budh (34.34) |
| Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Neutral | 9th | Yogakaraka— as the verse names it, together with Surya, the 10th lord (34.35–36) |
| Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Makar (Capricorn) | Neutral | 8th | Neutral |
| Makar (Capricorn) | Kumbh (Aquarius) | Neutral | 7th | Malefic— lord of the 7th, but the killer the verse names for this lagna is Mangal (34.39–40) |
| Kumbh (Aquarius) | Meen (Pisces) | Neutral | 6th | Malefic |
| Meen (Pisces) | Mesh (Aries) | Neutral | 5th | Benefic |
Chandra’s state in each rashi, and the houses it rules for each lagna, as our free kundli reads them (BPHS chapter 34); each house links to what Parashara says of its lord sitting in the 2nd. “Its state there” is how that rashi treats Chandra: exalted, own, friendly, neutral (sam), enemy or debilitated. “For this lagna” is Parashara’s verdict on the houses it rules. The two answer different questions.
The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:
Take Mithun lagna. Chandra sits in Kark there (own rashi) and rules your 2nd house, which makes it a maraka for Mithun lagna (BPHS 34). A graha hard for the lagna and strong in its rashi gives that harder side with force. The Lal Kitab reading above is the same for every lagna; this row is the part that changes with yours.
By Brihat Jataka 20.11, Chandra in the 2nd house gives its good in full for Mesh lagna, half for Mithun lagna, a quarter for Vrishabh, Kark and Singh lagna and none for Tula lagna, by the rashi it sits in. The verse gives no share for a neutral rashi, which is where it sits for Kanya, Vrishchik, Dhanu, Makar, Kumbh and Meen lagna. BJ 20.10–11
Not the birth placement above: here Chandra is moving through the 2nd counted from your Moon rashi. Phaladeepika does not count the 2nd among Chandra’s good transit houses (all twelve, on the Chandra page). Our Monthly Prediction reads it as mixed: money and family on the mind; how it goes depends on your birth Moon.
Lal Kitab counts it a good placement, one of the 8 houses where Chandra does well (with the 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th). By its rashi, it is strongest for Mesh and Mithun lagna; it is debilitated for Tula lagna.
Lal Kitab’s upay for it: Keep silver items and rice at home.
The 8th (longevity).
