What Surya gives in the 1st house by Lal Kitab and by Phaladeepika, its upay, the houses it looks at from there, and what it means for each lagna.
The Sun in the 1st house gives leadership, government favour, and a kingly demeanour. The person is self-confident and honourable.
Lal Kitab reads Surya in the 1st house by the house, not by your lagna; Parashara’s view for your own lagna is further down, and Phaladeepika and Brihat Jataka may differ. How Lal Kitab and Parashara differ · Lal Kitab: pakka ghar, rin and upay
Offer water to the Sun at sunrise daily.
This is Lal Kitab’s one upay for Surya in the 1st house, to keep its good results strong; it is a suggestion, and your whole kundli may call for another. All upay for Surya
Phaladeepika 8.1 holds that Surya (Sun) in the lagna (the ascendant, 1st house) gives thin hair, a tall and lean frame, and a proud, quick-tempered and impetuous nature. The text reads such a person as brave but impatient and hard-hearted, slow to set to work, and with eyes that are not clear.
When the lagna is Kark (Cancer) and Surya sits in it, Phaladeepika warns of cataract; in Mesh (Aries), of eye disease; in Singh (Leo), of night-blindness; and in Tula (Libra), of poverty and the loss of children. These are the text's cautions for those signs.
How much of this holds turns on the rest of the chart: the rashi Surya sits in, the 1st house’s lord and the grahas with it or looking at it. The old texts speak of a man; their readings apply to anyone.
BJ 20.1 makes the Sun in the 1st house give valour and an obstinate streak, with weak eyes and a hard heart. By the rashi rising: in Mesh, one earns well but has eye trouble; in Singh, night-blindness; in Tula, poor sight and poverty; in Kark, inflamed eyes.
Its results show most in Surya’s own mahadasha (6 years) and in its antardashas inside the others. The 1st house’s matters also come forward in the periods of the house’s lord, which depends on your lagna.
Its drishti (a graha’s glance: the houses it looks at feel its influence) from the 1st, by the rules our kundli reading weighs houses with:
The 1st house, Tanu bhava, rules self, body, health and how others see you; it is a kendra (one of the four angles of the chart, the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th houses, where a graha acts with most force) and a trikona (the 1st, 5th and 9th houses, the houses of fortune); its karaka (the graha that naturally signifies a house’s matters, whatever the lagna) is Surya. The 1st house, and every graha in it

Surya’s state in each rashi, and the houses it rules for each lagna, as our free kundli reads them (BPHS chapter 34); each house links to what Parashara says of its lord sitting in the 1st. “Its state there” is how that rashi treats Surya: exalted, own, friendly, neutral (sam), enemy or debilitated. “For this lagna” is Parashara’s verdict on the houses it rules. The two answer different questions.
The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:
Take Vrishabh lagna. Surya sits in Vrishabh there (enemy) and rules your 4th house, which makes it a benefic for Vrishabh lagna (BPHS 34). The two pull apart: the label says what it does for this lagna, the rashi how much strength it has to do it, so it gives less of that good than its label promises. The Lal Kitab reading above is the same for every lagna; this row is the part that changes with yours.
Brihat Jataka 20.11 grades how much of its good a graha gives by the rashi it sits in. For a malefic like Surya the translator reverses the scale and the commentators differ, so read Surya in the 1st house by Parashara’s table above. BJ 20.10–11
Not the birth placement above: here Surya is moving through the 1st counted from your Moon rashi. Phaladeepika does not count the 1st among Surya’s good transit houses (all twelve, on the Surya page). Our Monthly Prediction reads it as challenging: health dips, ego clashes, trouble with officials, tiredness.
Lal Kitab counts it a good placement, one of the 7 houses where Surya does well (with the 3rd, 5th, 6th, 9th, 10th and 11th). By its rashi, it is strongest for Mesh and Singh lagna; it is debilitated for Tula lagna.
Lal Kitab’s upay for it: Offer water to the Sun at sunrise daily.
The 7th (marriage).
