What Surya gives in the 10th house by Lal Kitab and by Phaladeepika, its upay, the houses it looks at from there, and what it means for each lagna.
The Sun in the 10th house gives high status in career, authority, and government connections.
Lal Kitab reads Surya in the 10th house by the house, not by your lagna; Parashara’s view for your own lagna is further down, and Phaladeepika and Brihat Jataka may differ. How Lal Kitab and Parashara differ · Lal Kitab: pakka ghar, rin and upay
Offer water to the Sun and donate jaggery on Sundays.
This is Lal Kitab’s one upay for Surya in the 10th house, to keep its good results strong; it is a suggestion, and your whole kundli may call for another. All upay for Surya
Phaladeepika 8.4 holds that Surya (Sun) in the 10th house (the house of career and status) gives children, vehicles, praise, intelligence, wealth, strength and fame. The text counts it a mark of rising to authority or a position of command.
How much of this holds turns on the rest of the chart: the rashi Surya sits in, the 10th house’s lord and the grahas with it or looking at it. The old texts speak of a man; their readings apply to anyone.
BJ 20.3: the Sun in the 10th makes one happy and powerful.
Its results show most in Surya’s own mahadasha (6 years) and in its antardashas inside the others. The 10th house’s matters also come forward in the periods of the house’s lord, which depends on your lagna.
Its drishti (a graha’s glance: the houses it looks at feel its influence) from the 10th, by the rules our kundli reading weighs houses with:
The 10th house, Karma bhava, rules career, status, reputation and authority; it is a kendra (one of the four angles of the chart, the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th houses, where a graha acts with most force) and an upachaya (the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th houses, which grow better with time and effort); its karaka (the graha that naturally signifies a house’s matters, whatever the lagna) is Budh, Surya, Guru, Shani. The 10th house, and every graha in it
| Lagna | Surya sits in | Its state there | Lord of your | For this lagna |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mesh (Aries) | Makar (Capricorn) | Enemy | 5th | Benefic |
| Vrishabh (Taurus) | Kumbh (Aquarius) | Enemy | 4th | Benefic |
| Mithun (Gemini) | Meen (Pisces) | Friendly | 3rd | Malefic |
| Kark (Cancer) | Mesh (Aries) | Exalted | 2nd | Maraka |
| Singh (Leo) | Vrishabh (Taurus) | Enemy | 1st | Benefic |
| Kanya (Virgo) | Mithun (Gemini) | Neutral | 12th | Neutral— gives results by association (34.32) |
| Tula (Libra) | Kark (Cancer) | Friendly | 11th | Malefic |
| Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Singh (Leo) | Own rashi | 10th | Yogakaraka— as the verse names it, together with Chandra, the 9th lord (34.35–36) |
| Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Kanya (Virgo) | Neutral | 9th | Benefic · Yoga— gives yoga together with Budh (34.38) |
| Makar (Capricorn) | Tula (Libra) | Debilitated | 8th | Neutral |
| Kumbh (Aquarius) | Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Friendly | 7th | Maraka |
| Meen (Pisces) | Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Friendly | 6th | Malefic |
Surya’s state in each rashi, and the houses it rules for each lagna, as our free kundli reads them (BPHS chapter 34); each house links to what Parashara says of its lord sitting in the 10th. “Its state there” is how that rashi treats Surya: exalted, own, friendly, neutral (sam), enemy or debilitated. “For this lagna” is Parashara’s verdict on the houses it rules. The two answer different questions.
The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:
Take Mesh lagna. Surya sits in Makar there (enemy) and rules your 5th house, which makes it a benefic for Mesh lagna (BPHS 34). The two pull apart: the label says what it does for this lagna, the rashi how much strength it has to do it, so it gives less of that good than its label promises. The Lal Kitab reading above is the same for every lagna; this row is the part that changes with yours.
Brihat Jataka 20.11 grades how much of its good a graha gives by the rashi it sits in. For a malefic like Surya the translator reverses the scale and the commentators differ, so read Surya in the 10th house by Parashara’s table above. BJ 20.10–11
Not the birth placement above: here Surya is moving through the 10th counted from your Moon rashi. Phaladeepika counts the 10th among Surya’s good transit houses (all twelve, on the Surya page). Our Monthly Prediction reads it as good: success at work, recognition, authority, gains in career.
Lal Kitab counts it a good placement, one of the 7 houses where Surya does well (with the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 6th, 9th and 11th). By its rashi, it is strongest for Kark and Vrishchik lagna; it is debilitated for Makar lagna.
Lal Kitab’s upay for it: Offer water to the Sun and donate jaggery on Sundays.
