What Surya gives in the 4th house by Lal Kitab and by Phaladeepika, its upay, the houses it looks at from there, and what it means for each lagna.
The Sun in the 4th house gives government property and vehicles but may create domestic unrest and health issues for the mother.
Lal Kitab reads Surya in the 4th house by the house, not by your lagna; Parashara’s view for your own lagna is further down, and Phaladeepika and Brihat Jataka may differ. How Lal Kitab and Parashara differ · Lal Kitab: pakka ghar, rin and upay
Offer water to the Sun and feed jaggery to monkeys.
This is Lal Kitab’s one upay for Surya in the 4th house, offered to ease its harder side; it is a suggestion, and your whole kundli may call for another. All upay for Surya
Phaladeepika 8.2 holds that Surya (Sun) in the 4th house (the house of home, land and contentment) takes away comfort, and leaves a person without close relatives, land, friends or a home of their own. The text adds that such a person works in government service and spends away the property inherited from the father.
How much of this holds turns on the rest of the chart: the rashi Surya sits in, the 4th house’s lord and the grahas with it or looking at it. The old texts speak of a man; their readings apply to anyone.
BJ 20.2: the Sun in the 4th leaves little happiness and a troubled mind.
Its results show most in Surya’s own mahadasha (6 years) and in its antardashas inside the others. The 4th house’s matters also come forward in the periods of the house’s lord, which depends on your lagna.
Its drishti (a graha’s glance: the houses it looks at feel its influence) from the 4th, by the rules our kundli reading weighs houses with:
The 4th house, Sukha bhava, rules mother, home, property, vehicles and peace of mind; it is a kendra (one of the four angles of the chart, the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th houses, where a graha acts with most force); its karaka (the graha that naturally signifies a house’s matters, whatever the lagna) is Chandra. The 4th house, and every graha in it

Surya’s state in each rashi, and the houses it rules for each lagna, as our free kundli reads them (BPHS chapter 34); each house links to what Parashara says of its lord sitting in the 4th. “Its state there” is how that rashi treats Surya: exalted, own, friendly, neutral (sam), enemy or debilitated. “For this lagna” is Parashara’s verdict on the houses it rules. The two answer different questions.
The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:
Take Vrishchik lagna. Surya sits in Kumbh there (enemy) and rules your 10th house, which makes it a yogakaraka for Vrishchik lagna (BPHS 34). The two pull apart: the label says what it does for this lagna, the rashi how much strength it has to do it, so it gives less of that good than its label promises. The Lal Kitab reading above is the same for every lagna; this row is the part that changes with yours.
Brihat Jataka 20.11 grades how much of its good a graha gives by the rashi it sits in. For a malefic like Surya the translator reverses the scale and the commentators differ, so read Surya in the 4th house by Parashara’s table above. BJ 20.10–11
Not the birth placement above: here Surya is moving through the 4th counted from your Moon rashi. Phaladeepika does not count the 4th among Surya’s good transit houses (all twelve, on the Surya page). Our Monthly Prediction reads it as challenging: worry, trouble at home, vehicle problems, the mother’s health.
Lal Kitab counts it a hard placement; Surya does well in the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 6th, 9th, 10th and 11th. By its rashi, it is strongest for Vrishabh and Makar lagna; it is debilitated for Kark lagna.
Lal Kitab’s upay for it: Offer water to the Sun and feed jaggery to monkeys.
