What Shani gives in the 6th house by Lal Kitab and by Phaladeepika, its upay, the houses it looks at from there, and what it means for each lagna.
Saturn in the 6th house gives victory over enemies and good health through discipline. It brings success in service-oriented work.
Lal Kitab reads Shani in the 6th house by the house, not by your lagna; Parashara’s view for your own lagna is further down, and Phaladeepika and Brihat Jataka may differ. How Lal Kitab and Parashara differ · Lal Kitab: pakka ghar, rin and upay

This is Lal Kitab’s one upay for Shani in the 6th house, to keep its good results strong; it is a suggestion, and your whole kundli may call for another. All upay for Shani
Phaladeepika 8.22 holds that Shani (Saturn) in the 6th house (the house of enemies and disease) gives a large appetite and wealth. The text also says the person may be held down by opponents, and describes them as stubborn and self-respecting.
How much of this holds turns on the rest of the chart: the rashi Shani sits in, the 6th house’s lord and the grahas with it or looking at it. The old texts speak of a man; their readings apply to anyone.
BJ 20.9 gives Shani in the 6th the same result as the Sun there (20.2): strength, with the readings divided on whether one overcomes enemies or is overcome by them.
Its results show most in Shani’s own mahadasha (19 years) and in its antardashas inside the others. The 6th house’s matters also come forward in the periods of the house’s lord, which depends on your lagna.
Its drishti (a graha’s glance: the houses it looks at feel its influence) from the 6th, by the rules our kundli reading weighs houses with:
The 6th house, Ripu bhava, rules illness, debt, rivals, service and daily work; it is a dusthana (the 6th, 8th and 12th houses, the hard houses of illness, sudden events and loss) and an upachaya; its karaka (the graha that naturally signifies a house’s matters, whatever the lagna) is Mangal, Shani. The 6th house, and every graha in it
| Lagna | Shani sits in | Its state there | Lord of your | For this lagna |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mesh (Aries) | Kanya (Virgo) | Friendly | 10th and 11th | Malefic |
| Vrishabh (Taurus) | Tula (Libra) | Exalted | 9th and 10th | Yogakaraka |
| Mithun (Gemini) | Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Enemy | 8th and 9th | Neutral |
| Kark (Cancer) | Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Neutral | 7th and 8th | Maraka |
| Singh (Leo) | Makar (Capricorn) | Own rashi | 6th and 7th | Malefic · Maraka |
| Kanya (Virgo) | Kumbh (Aquarius) | Own rashi | 5th and 6th | Neutral |
| Tula (Libra) | Meen (Pisces) | Neutral | 4th and 5th | Yogakaraka |
| Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Mesh (Aries) | Debilitated | 3rd and 4th | Malefic |
| Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Vrishabh (Taurus) | Friendly | 2nd and 3rd | Maraka |
| Makar (Capricorn) | Mithun (Gemini) | Friendly | 1st and 2nd | Neutral— the lagna lord; not a killer on his own, the verse says (34.39) |
| Kumbh (Aquarius) | Kark (Cancer) | Enemy | 1st and 12th | Benefic— the lagna lord, and one the verse itself names auspicious for Kumbh (34.41) |
| Meen (Pisces) | Singh (Leo) | Enemy | 11th and 12th | Malefic · Maraka— lord of the 11th and 12th, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.43–44) |
The 6th is a dusthana, one of the hard houses. Where the table calls Shani a yogakaraka (the graha that brings yoga, success and standing, to a lagna: the best it can have) or a benefic for a lagna, sitting here it gives less than its lordship promises.
Shani’s state in each rashi, and the houses it rules for each lagna, as our free kundli reads them (BPHS chapter 34); each house links to what Parashara says of its lord sitting in the 6th. “Its state there” is how that rashi treats Shani: exalted, own, friendly, neutral (sam), enemy or debilitated. “For this lagna” is Parashara’s verdict on the houses it rules. The two answer different questions.
The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:
Take Kumbh lagna. Shani sits in Kark there (enemy) and rules your 1st and 12th houses, which makes it a benefic for Kumbh lagna (BPHS 34). The two pull apart: the label says what it does for this lagna, the rashi how much strength it has to do it, so it gives less of that good than its label promises. Its drishti falls on the 12th house, which it rules for this lagna, so there the glance is not counted against it. The Lal Kitab reading above is the same for every lagna; this row is the part that changes with yours.
Brihat Jataka 20.11 grades how much of its good a graha gives by the rashi it sits in. For a malefic like Shani the translator reverses the scale and the commentators differ, so read Shani in the 6th house by Parashara’s table above. BJ 20.10–11
Not the birth placement above: here Shani is moving through the 6th counted from your Moon rashi. Phaladeepika counts the 6th among Shani’s good transit houses (all twelve, on the Shani page). Our Monthly Prediction reads it as very good: an edge over rivals, a health routine works, debts get cleared.
Lal Kitab counts it a good placement, one of the 6 houses where Shani does well (with the 3rd, 7th, 8th, 10th and 11th). By its rashi, it is strongest for Vrishabh, Singh and Kanya lagna; it is debilitated for Vrishchik lagna.

The 8th (longevity), 12th (expenses) and 3rd (younger siblings).
