What Shani gives in the 4th house by Lal Kitab and by Phaladeepika, its upay, the houses it looks at from there, and what it means for each lagna.
Saturn in the 4th house creates domestic unhappiness, delays in acquiring property, and health issues for the mother.
In a kendra (one of the four angles of the chart, the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th houses, where a graha acts with most force), in Makar (Capricorn), Kumbh (Aquarius) or Tula (Libra), Shani forms Shasha Yoga, one of the five Pancha Mahapurusha (“great person”) yogas of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra. The table below marks the lagnas where that happens.
Lal Kitab reads Shani in the 4th house by the house, not by your lagna; Parashara’s view for your own lagna is further down, and Phaladeepika and Brihat Jataka may differ. How Lal Kitab and Parashara differ · Lal Kitab: pakka ghar, rin and upay
Offer milk at a Shiva temple. Donate mustard oil on Saturdays.
This is Lal Kitab’s one upay for Shani in the 4th house, offered to ease its harder side; it is a suggestion, and your whole kundli may call for another. All upay for Shani
Phaladeepika 8.22 reads Shani (Saturn) in the 4th house (the house of home, mother and comforts) as a placement of unhappiness at home. The text speaks of being without a house of one's own or vehicles, and of poor health in the early years. It also cautions about the loss of the mother under this placement.
How much of this holds turns on the rest of the chart: the rashi Shani sits in, the 4th house’s lord and the grahas with it or looking at it. The old texts speak of a man; their readings apply to anyone.
BJ 20.9 gives Shani in the 4th the same result as the Sun there (20.2): little happiness and a troubled mind.
Its results show most in Shani’s own mahadasha (19 years) and in its antardashas inside the others. The 4th house’s matters also come forward in the periods of the house’s lord, which depends on your lagna.
Its drishti (a graha’s glance: the houses it looks at feel its influence) from the 4th, by the rules our kundli reading weighs houses with:
The 4th house, Sukha bhava, rules mother, home, property, vehicles and peace of mind; it is a kendra; its karaka (the graha that naturally signifies a house’s matters, whatever the lagna) is Chandra. The 4th house, and every graha in it
| Lagna | Shani sits in | Its state there | Lord of your | For this lagna |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mesh (Aries) | Kark (Cancer) | Enemy | 10th and 11th | Malefic |
| Vrishabh (Taurus) | Singh (Leo) | Enemy | 9th and 10th | Yogakaraka |
| Mithun (Gemini) | Kanya (Virgo) | Friendly | 8th and 9th | Neutral |
| Kark (Cancer) | Tula (Libra) | Exalted · Shasha Yoga | 7th and 8th | Maraka |
| Singh (Leo) | Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Enemy | 6th and 7th | Malefic · Maraka |
| Kanya (Virgo) | Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Neutral | 5th and 6th | Neutral |

| Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Kumbh (Aquarius) | Own rashi · Shasha Yoga | 3rd and 4th | Malefic |
| Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Meen (Pisces) | Neutral | 2nd and 3rd | Maraka |
| Makar (Capricorn) | Mesh (Aries) | Debilitated | 1st and 2nd | Neutral— the lagna lord; not a killer on his own, the verse says (34.39) |
| Kumbh (Aquarius) | Vrishabh (Taurus) | Friendly | 1st and 12th | Benefic— the lagna lord, and one the verse itself names auspicious for Kumbh (34.41) |
| Meen (Pisces) | Mithun (Gemini) | Friendly | 11th and 12th | Malefic · Maraka— lord of the 11th and 12th, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.43–44) |
Shani’s state in each rashi, and the houses it rules for each lagna, as our free kundli reads them (BPHS chapter 34); each house links to what Parashara says of its lord sitting in the 4th. “Its state there” is how that rashi treats Shani: exalted, own, friendly, neutral (sam), enemy or debilitated. “For this lagna” is Parashara’s verdict on the houses it rules. The two answer different questions.
The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:
Take Vrishabh lagna. Shani sits in Singh there (enemy) and rules your 9th and 10th houses, which makes it a yogakaraka for Vrishabh lagna (BPHS 34). The two pull apart: the label says what it does for this lagna, the rashi how much strength it has to do it, so it gives less of that good than its label promises. Its drishti falls on the 10th house, which it rules for this lagna, so there the glance is not counted against it. The Lal Kitab reading above is the same for every lagna; this row is the part that changes with yours.
Brihat Jataka 20.11 grades how much of its good a graha gives by the rashi it sits in. For a malefic like Shani the translator reverses the scale and the commentators differ, so read Shani in the 4th house by Parashara’s table above. BJ 20.10–11
Not the birth placement above: here Shani is moving through the 4th counted from your Moon rashi. Phaladeepika does not count the 4th among Shani’s good transit houses (all twelve, on the Shani page). Our Monthly Prediction reads it as difficult: patience at home, the mother’s health, property delays. This transit is a dhaiyya (Kantaka Shani): two and a half years, smaller than Sade Sati, felt at home and in health.
Lal Kitab counts it a hard placement; Shani does well in the 3rd, 6th, 7th, 8th, 10th and 11th. By its rashi, it is strongest for Kark, Tula and Vrishchik lagna; it is debilitated for Makar lagna.
Lal Kitab’s upay for it: Offer milk at a Shiva temple; donate mustard oil on Saturdays.
The 6th (illness), 10th (career) and 1st (self).
