What Shani gives in the 1st house by Lal Kitab and by Phaladeepika, its upay, the houses it looks at from there, and what it means for each lagna.
Saturn in the 1st house gives a disciplined but hard life. Success comes after great struggle. The person is long-lived but inclined to pessimism.
In a kendra (one of the four angles of the chart, the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th houses, where a graha acts with most force), in Makar (Capricorn), Kumbh (Aquarius) or Tula (Libra), Shani forms Shasha Yoga, one of the five Pancha Mahapurusha (“great person”) yogas of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra. The table below marks the lagnas where that happens.
Lal Kitab reads Shani in the 1st house by the house, not by your lagna; Parashara’s view for your own lagna is further down, and Phaladeepika and Brihat Jataka may differ. How Lal Kitab and Parashara differ · Lal Kitab: pakka ghar, rin and upay
Feed crows and offer mustard oil at a Shani temple on Saturdays.
This is Lal Kitab’s one upay for Shani in the 1st house, offered to ease its harder side; it is a suggestion, and your whole kundli may call for another. All upay for Shani
Phaladeepika 8.20 holds that when Shani (Saturn) rises in the lagna (the ascendant, 1st house) in a sign other than its own or its exaltation, the person meets sorrow and hardship from childhood and struggles with poverty. The text also describes such a person as untidy and slow to act.
If the lagna is Tula (Libra), where Shani is exalted, or Makar (Capricorn) or Kumbh (Aquarius), its own signs, Phaladeepika turns the reading round: the person rises to authority, as the head of a city or a leader on a par with those in power.
How much of this holds turns on the rest of the chart: the rashi Shani sits in, the 1st house’s lord and the grahas with it or looking at it. The old texts speak of a man; their readings apply to anyone.
BJ 20.9 reads Shani in the 1st as poverty, ill health, an unclean habit, illness in childhood and unclear speech, unless the rashi rising is Dhanu, Meen, Kumbh, Makar or Tula. Rising in one of those, it raises one to a ruler’s or a town head’s standing, with learning and good looks.
Its results show most in Shani’s own mahadasha (19 years) and in its antardashas inside the others. The 1st house’s matters also come forward in the periods of the house’s lord, which depends on your lagna.
Its drishti (a graha’s glance: the houses it looks at feel its influence) from the 1st, by the rules our kundli reading weighs houses with:
The 1st house, Tanu bhava, rules self, body, health and how others see you; it is a kendra and a trikona (the 1st, 5th and 9th houses, the houses of fortune); its karaka (the graha that naturally signifies a house’s matters, whatever the lagna) is Surya. The 1st house, and every graha in it

| Makar (Capricorn) | Makar (Capricorn) | Own rashi · Shasha Yoga | 1st and 2nd | Neutral— the lagna lord; not a killer on his own, the verse says (34.39) |
| Kumbh (Aquarius) | Kumbh (Aquarius) | Own rashi · Shasha Yoga | 1st and 12th | Benefic— the lagna lord, and one the verse itself names auspicious for Kumbh (34.41) |
| Meen (Pisces) | Meen (Pisces) | Neutral | 11th and 12th | Malefic · Maraka— lord of the 11th and 12th, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.43–44) |
Shani’s state in each rashi, and the houses it rules for each lagna, as our free kundli reads them (BPHS chapter 34); each house links to what Parashara says of its lord sitting in the 1st. “Its state there” is how that rashi treats Shani: exalted, own, friendly, neutral (sam), enemy or debilitated. “For this lagna” is Parashara’s verdict on the houses it rules. The two answer different questions.
The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:
Take Tula lagna. Shani sits in Tula there (exalted) and rules your 4th and 5th houses, which makes it a yogakaraka for Tula lagna (BPHS 34). Both point the same way, a graha good for the lagna and strong in its rashi: the best this table holds. The Lal Kitab reading above is the same for every lagna; this row is the part that changes with yours.
Brihat Jataka 20.11 grades how much of its good a graha gives by the rashi it sits in. For a malefic like Shani the translator reverses the scale and the commentators differ, so read Shani in the 1st house by Parashara’s table above. BJ 20.10–11
Not the birth placement above: here Shani is moving through the 1st counted from your Moon rashi. Phaladeepika does not count the 1st among Shani’s good transit houses (all twelve, on the Shani page). Our Monthly Prediction reads it as difficult: look after your health; a time of discipline that builds character. This transit is the peak phase of Sade Sati: Shani’s seven and a half years over the 12th, 1st and 2nd from the Moon.
Lal Kitab counts it a hard placement; Shani does well in the 3rd, 6th, 7th, 8th, 10th and 11th. By its rashi, it is strongest for Tula, Makar and Kumbh lagna; it is debilitated for Mesh lagna.
Lal Kitab’s upay for it: Feed crows and offer mustard oil at a Shani temple on Saturdays.
The 3rd (younger siblings), 7th (marriage) and 10th (career).
