What Shani gives in the 10th house by Lal Kitab and by Phaladeepika, its upay, the houses it looks at from there, and what it means for each lagna.
Saturn in the 10th house gives steady career success through hard work, with authority and discipline in the profession. Results come after the age of 36.
In a kendra (one of the four angles of the chart, the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th houses, where a graha acts with most force), in Makar (Capricorn), Kumbh (Aquarius) or Tula (Libra), Shani forms Shasha Yoga, one of the five Pancha Mahapurusha (“great person”) yogas of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra. The table below marks the lagnas where that happens.
Lal Kitab reads Shani in the 10th house by the house, not by your lagna; Parashara’s view for your own lagna is further down, and Phaladeepika and Brihat Jataka may differ. How Lal Kitab and Parashara differ · Lal Kitab: pakka ghar, rin and upay

This is Lal Kitab’s one upay for Shani in the 10th house, to keep its good results strong; it is a suggestion, and your whole kundli may call for another. All upay for Shani
Phaladeepika 8.24 holds that Shani (Saturn) in the 10th house (the house of career and status) brings a rise to authority, or a post as trusted adviser to those in power. The text links this placement with farming and land, and with courage, wealth and renown.
How much of this holds turns on the rest of the chart: the rashi Shani sits in, the 10th house’s lord and the grahas with it or looking at it. The old texts speak of a man; their readings apply to anyone.
BJ 20.9 gives Shani in the 10th the same result as the Sun there (20.3): happiness and power.
Its results show most in Shani’s own mahadasha (19 years) and in its antardashas inside the others. The 10th house’s matters also come forward in the periods of the house’s lord, which depends on your lagna.
Its drishti (a graha’s glance: the houses it looks at feel its influence) from the 10th, by the rules our kundli reading weighs houses with:
The 10th house, Karma bhava, rules career, status, reputation and authority; it is a kendra and an upachaya (the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th houses, which grow better with time and effort); its karaka (the graha that naturally signifies a house’s matters, whatever the lagna) is Budh, Surya, Guru, Shani. The 10th house, and every graha in it
| Lagna | Shani sits in | Its state there | Lord of your | For this lagna |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mesh (Aries) | Makar (Capricorn) | Own rashi · Shasha Yoga | 10th and 11th | Malefic |
| Vrishabh (Taurus) | Kumbh (Aquarius) | Own rashi · Shasha Yoga | 9th and 10th | Yogakaraka |
| Mithun (Gemini) | Meen (Pisces) | Neutral | 8th and 9th | Neutral |
| Kark (Cancer) | Mesh (Aries) | Debilitated | 7th and 8th | Maraka |

| Tula (Libra) | Kark (Cancer) | Enemy | 4th and 5th | Yogakaraka |
| Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Singh (Leo) | Enemy | 3rd and 4th | Malefic |
| Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Kanya (Virgo) | Friendly | 2nd and 3rd | Maraka |
| Makar (Capricorn) | Tula (Libra) | Exalted · Shasha Yoga | 1st and 2nd | Neutral— the lagna lord; not a killer on his own, the verse says (34.39) |
| Kumbh (Aquarius) | Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Enemy | 1st and 12th | Benefic— the lagna lord, and one the verse itself names auspicious for Kumbh (34.41) |
| Meen (Pisces) | Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Neutral | 11th and 12th | Malefic · Maraka— lord of the 11th and 12th, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.43–44) |
Shani’s state in each rashi, and the houses it rules for each lagna, as our free kundli reads them (BPHS chapter 34); each house links to what Parashara says of its lord sitting in the 10th. “Its state there” is how that rashi treats Shani: exalted, own, friendly, neutral (sam), enemy or debilitated. “For this lagna” is Parashara’s verdict on the houses it rules. The two answer different questions.
The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:
Take Tula lagna. Shani sits in Kark there (enemy) and rules your 4th and 5th houses, which makes it a yogakaraka for Tula lagna (BPHS 34). The two pull apart: the label says what it does for this lagna, the rashi how much strength it has to do it, so it gives less of that good than its label promises. Its drishti falls on the 4th house, which it rules for this lagna, so there the glance is not counted against it. The Lal Kitab reading above is the same for every lagna; this row is the part that changes with yours.
Brihat Jataka 20.11 grades how much of its good a graha gives by the rashi it sits in. For a malefic like Shani the translator reverses the scale and the commentators differ, so read Shani in the 10th house by Parashara’s table above. BJ 20.10–11
Not the birth placement above: here Shani is moving through the 10th counted from your Moon rashi. Phaladeepika does not count the 10th among Shani’s good transit houses (all twelve, on the Shani page). Our Monthly Prediction reads it as mixed: building a career through hard work; a slow but steady rise.
Lal Kitab counts it a good placement, one of the 6 houses where Shani does well (with the 3rd, 6th, 7th, 8th and 11th). By its rashi, it is strongest for Mesh, Vrishabh and Makar lagna; it is debilitated for Kark lagna.
Lal Kitab’s upay for it: Feed crows daily; donate mustard oil on Saturdays.
The 12th (expenses), 4th (mother) and 7th (marriage).
