What Chandra gives in the 1st house by Lal Kitab and by Phaladeepika, its upay, the houses it looks at from there, and what it means for each lagna.
The Moon in the 1st house gives a charming personality, good imagination, and popularity. The mother is long-lived.
Lal Kitab reads Chandra in the 1st house by the house, not by your lagna; Parashara’s view for your own lagna is further down, and Phaladeepika and Brihat Jataka may differ. How Lal Kitab and Parashara differ · Lal Kitab: pakka ghar, rin and upay
Keep a silver square piece in your pocket.
This is Lal Kitab’s one upay for Chandra in the 1st house, to keep its good results strong; it is a suggestion, and your whole kundli may call for another. All upay for Chandra
Phaladeepika 8.5 holds that a waxing Chandra (Moon), one growing towards full in shukla paksha (the bright fortnight), in the lagna (the ascendant, 1st house) gives a strong constitution and a long life. The text adds fearlessness, great strength and wealth.
If Chandra in the lagna is waning, in krishna paksha (the dark fortnight), Phaladeepika holds that these results are reversed.
How much of this holds turns on the rest of the chart: the rashi Chandra sits in, the 1st house’s lord and the grahas with it or looking at it. The old texts speak of a man; their readings apply to anyone.
BJ 20.4 reads the Moon in the 1st harshly, with dullness, a servile or unsettled nature and defects of speech, hearing or sight, except when the rashi rising is Mesh, Vrishabh or Kark. In Kark, its own rashi, it gives wealth; in Vrishabh, wealth; in Mesh, many children.
Its results show most in Chandra’s own mahadasha (10 years) and in its antardashas inside the others. The 1st house’s matters also come forward in the periods of the house’s lord, which depends on your lagna.
Its drishti (a graha’s glance: the houses it looks at feel its influence) from the 1st, by the rules our kundli reading weighs houses with:
The 1st house, Tanu bhava, rules self, body, health and how others see you; it is a kendra (one of the four angles of the chart, the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th houses, where a graha acts with most force) and a trikona (the 1st, 5th and 9th houses, the houses of fortune); its karaka (the graha that naturally signifies a house’s matters, whatever the lagna) is Surya. The 1st house, and every graha in it
| Lagna | Chandra sits in | Its state there | Lord of your | For this lagna |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mesh (Aries) | Mesh (Aries) | Neutral | 4th | Neutral |
| Vrishabh (Taurus) | Vrishabh (Taurus) | Exalted | 3rd | Malefic · Maraka— lord of the 3rd only, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.23–24) |
| Mithun (Gemini) | Mithun (Gemini) | Friendly | 2nd | Maraka |
| Kark (Cancer) | Kark (Cancer) | Own rashi | 1st | Benefic |
| Singh (Leo) | Singh (Leo) | Friendly | 12th | Maraka— lord of the 12th only, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.29–30) |
| Kanya (Virgo) | Kanya (Virgo) | Friendly | 11th | Malefic |
| Tula (Libra) | Tula (Libra) | Neutral | 10th | Neutral · Yoga— gives yoga together with Budh (34.34) |
| Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Debilitated | 9th | Yogakaraka— as the verse names it, together with Surya, the 10th lord (34.35–36) |
| Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Neutral | 8th | Neutral |
| Makar (Capricorn) | Makar (Capricorn) | Neutral | 7th | Malefic— lord of the 7th, but the killer the verse names for this lagna is Mangal (34.39–40) |

| Meen (Pisces) | Meen (Pisces) | Neutral | 5th | Benefic |
Chandra’s state in each rashi, and the houses it rules for each lagna, as our free kundli reads them (BPHS chapter 34); each house links to what Parashara says of its lord sitting in the 1st. “Its state there” is how that rashi treats Chandra: exalted, own, friendly, neutral (sam), enemy or debilitated. “For this lagna” is Parashara’s verdict on the houses it rules. The two answer different questions.
The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:
Take Vrishchik lagna. Chandra sits in Vrishchik there (debilitated) and rules your 9th house, which makes it a yogakaraka for Vrishchik lagna (BPHS 34). The two pull apart: the label says what it does for this lagna, the rashi how much strength it has to do it, so it gives less of that good than its label promises, unless a neecha bhanga (a cancelled debility) lifts it. The Lal Kitab reading above is the same for every lagna; this row is the part that changes with yours.
By Brihat Jataka 20.11, Chandra in the 1st house gives its good in full for Vrishabh lagna, half for Kark lagna, a quarter for Mithun, Singh and Kanya lagna and none for Vrishchik lagna, by the rashi it sits in. The verse gives no share for a neutral rashi, which is where it sits for Mesh, Tula, Dhanu, Makar, Kumbh and Meen lagna. BJ 20.10–11
Not the birth placement above: here Chandra is moving through the 1st counted from your Moon rashi. Phaladeepika counts the 1st among Chandra’s good transit houses (all twelve, on the Chandra page). Our Monthly Prediction reads it as good: good food, comforts, peace of mind, recognition.
Lal Kitab counts it a good placement, one of the 8 houses where Chandra does well (with the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th). By its rashi, it is strongest for Vrishabh and Kark lagna; it is debilitated for Vrishchik lagna.
Lal Kitab’s upay for it: Keep a silver square piece in your pocket.
The 7th (marriage).
