Mangal mahadasha is about
effort, property and disputes
Mangal · Chandra
Chandra antardasha in Mangal mahadasha runs 7 months. It is the ninth of the nine and begins 6 years 5 months after the mahadasha starts.
Mangal’s 7 years × Chandra’s 10 years ÷ 120
7 months · 213 days
Surya antardasha comes before it, and it closes the mahadasha; Rahu mahadasha begins when it ends. The last months of a mahadasha, where one period hands over to the next, are called dasha sandhi (the junction), and the tradition reads them with care.
Mangal counts Chandra a friend, and Chandra counts Mangal neither friend nor enemy (neutral). That natural relationship is where reading a Mangal–Chandra period starts; where Mangal and Chandra sit in your kundli decides what it brings.

Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 54, verses 70–76
Parashara reads Chandra’s antardasha in Mangal’s mahadasha by where Chandra sits, counted from the lagna and from Mangal, and by what it rules; your kundli shows which line is yours, and though the text speaks of a man, its results apply to anyone.
For relief, BPHS prescribes reciting the mantras of Goddess Durga and Goddess Lakshmi.
BPHS 54.74–76A caution: BPHS counts this a maraka period (one the texts link with danger to life) when Chandra rules your 2nd or 7th house. It warns of danger of untimely death, bodily distress and mental anguish, and asks for care with health. BPHS 54.74–76
What Mangal and Chandra are for each lagna, as Parashara lists them, and the two read together
Both are favourable for Kark (Cancer), Meen (Pisces) lagna. Both are hard for Vrishabh (Taurus), Mithun (Gemini), Kanya (Virgo), Makar (Capricorn), Kumbh (Aquarius) lagna, where the period asks for the most care. For Singh (Leo) lagna one is good and the other hard, so the period is mixed. Where one of the two is neutral, the other decides the lean: towards good for Mesh (Aries), Vrishchik (Scorpio), Dhanu (Sagittarius) and towards hard for Tula (Libra).
The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:
| Lagna | Mangal is (lord of) | Chandra is (lord of) | Together |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mesh (Aries) | Benefic 1st and 8th | Neutral 4th | Leans favourable |
| Vrishabh (Taurus) | Maraka 7th and 12th | Malefic · Maraka— lord of the 3rd only, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.23–24) 3rd | Hard |
| Mithun (Gemini) | Malefic 6th and 11th | Maraka 2nd | Hard |
| Kark (Cancer) | Yogakaraka 5th and 10th | Benefic 1st | Favourable |
| Singh (Leo) | Yogakaraka 4th and 9th | Maraka— lord of the 12th only, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.29–30) 12th | Mixed |
| Kanya (Virgo) | Malefic 3rd and 8th | Malefic 11th | Hard |
| Tula (Libra) | Malefic · Maraka 2nd and 7th | Neutral · Yoga— gives yoga together with Budh (34.34) 10th | Leans hard |
| Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Neutral 1st and 6th | Yogakaraka— as the verse names it, together with Surya, the 10th lord (34.35–36) 9th | Leans favourable |
| Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Benefic 5th and 12th | Neutral 8th | Leans favourable |
| Makar (Capricorn) | Malefic · Maraka— lord of the 4th and 11th, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.39–40) 4th and 11th | Malefic— lord of the 7th, but the killer the verse names for this lagna is Mangal (34.39–40) 7th | Hard |
| Kumbh (Aquarius) | Malefic · Maraka— lord of the 3rd and 10th, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.41–42) 3rd and 10th | Malefic 6th | Hard |
| Meen (Pisces) | Benefic · Yoga— gives yoga together with Guru (34.44)— also named a killer, though not one who kills on his own (34.44) 2nd and 9th | Benefic 5th | Favourable |
“Together” reads Mangal and Chandra side by side: both favourable is Favourable; one favourable and one neutral, Leans favourable; one each way, Mixed; one hard and one neutral, Leans hard; both hard, Hard; both neutral, Placement decides. A Yoga pair is two grahas Parashara names together for that lagna.
One kundli that meets Mangal–Chandra at 52, read the way the report reads yours
From the Janam Kundli report
Mangal rules your 2nd house and 7th house and sits in your 7th house: this period brings those matters forward — the money at hand, the family, and speech; the spouse, partners, and those one deals with. Mixed — a kendra or trikona and strong in its sign; on the other side: short of Shadbala and in an enemy's sign in the navamsa.
In this kundli it runs 14 October 2042 – 15 May 2043, at the age of 52. Its length here can differ from the one above by a day, because each kundli’s dates round to the day.
Chandra: rules your 10th house, sits in your 6th house. It brings work, standing, and those senior to you. Go carefully — a difficult house, at a hard angle from Mangal and short of Shadbala; on the other side: vargottama.
Shadbala: the six-fold measure of a graha’s strength the report computes; “short of Shadbala” means below the strength the texts ask of it. Vargottama: in the same rashi in the birth chart and in the navamsa, which strengthens a graha. Navamsa: the ninth-division chart, read for a graha’s inner strength.
Mangal–Chandra divides into nine pratyantars from Chandra’s own on. Each length is counted between the dates beside it, and comes out the same in any kundli give or take a day; the dates and readings are this one’s.
| Pratyantar | Length | In this kundli | The report reads |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chandra | 18 days | 14 October 2042 – 1 November 2042 | Care |
| Mangal | 12 days | 1 November 2042 – 13 November 2042 | Mixed |
| Rahu | 1 month 2 days | 13 November 2042 – 15 December 2042 | Opens |
| Guru | 28 days | 15 December 2042 – 12 January 2043 | Mixed |
| Shani | 1 month 3 days | 12 January 2043 – 15 February 2043 | Opens |
| Budh | 1 month 2 days | 15 February 2043 – 17 March 2043 | Mixed |
| Ketu | 13 days | 17 March 2043 – 30 March 2043 | Mixed |
| Shukra | 1 month 4 days | 30 March 2043 – 4 May 2043 | Mixed |
| Surya | 11 days | 4 May 2043 – 15 May 2043 | Opens |

Suggestions for Chandra’s months, which your kundli confirms
Parashara gives Mangal–Chandra a remedy of its own (BPHS 54.74–76), set out above under “Parashara’s remedy”; it comes first.
ॐ श्रां श्रीं श्रौं सः चन्द्राय नमः
Daan: rice and white cloth, on Monday
What helps and what to keep clear of in any Chandra period: Chandra mahadasha. Its vrat, ratna, stotra and puja: Chandra upay.
7 months (213 days): Mangal’s 7 years × Chandra’s 10 years ÷ 120. It begins 6 years 5 months after a Mangal mahadasha starts.
Not in advance: it turns on your lagna and on where Mangal and Chandra sit in your kundli. By Parashara’s lists it is strongest for Kark (Cancer), Meen (Pisces) lagna. It is hardest for Vrishabh (Taurus), Mithun (Gemini), Kanya (Virgo), Makar (Capricorn), Kumbh (Aquarius) lagna. By nature the friendship is uneven: Mangal sees Chandra as a friend, and Chandra sees Mangal as neutral. On the Tula lagna kundli above, the Janam Kundli report reads it as “Care”, as its chip above says.
Nine, in the order Chandra, Mangal, Rahu, Guru, Shani, Budh, Ketu, Shukra, Surya. Each is Mangal–Chandra’s length × the pratyantar lord’s years ÷ 120, so the longest is Shukra’s, about 1 month 4 days, and the shortest Surya’s, about 11 days.
Parashara gives this antardasha a remedy of its own (BPHS 54.74–76), set out above under “Parashara’s remedy”. The Chandra beej mantra, Om Shraam Shreem Shraum Sah Chandraya Namah, and a daan of rice and white cloth on Monday are the everyday upay for Mangal–Chandra, where your kundli shows the need.
It follows from the Moon’s nakshatra at your birth. Enter your birth details and the whole 120-year timeline comes with it, each period read for your chart.
