How the two grahas get on

Mangal and Surya are friends to each other. That natural relationship is where reading a Mangal–Surya period starts; where Mangal and Surya sit in your kundli decides what it brings.

Mangal mahadasha is about

effort, property and disputes

Surya antardasha adds

standing, authority and the father

What it touches in life

Mangal–Surya area by area, in plain words, from Parashara’s verses set out below

AreaWhat the verses give
Work and standingWhen it goes well: you gain a good name, recognition, unusual profit in business and an audience with authorities; when it is hard: your ventures fail.
Money and propertyWhen it goes well: you gain vehicles and growing wealth.
FamilyWhen it goes well: a son is born and harmony fills your family.
HealthWhen it goes well: you enjoy sound health and vigour; when it is hard: you suffer distress, anguish, fever and dysentery.

For faith and journeys, Parashara’s verses on Mangal–Surya give nothing of their own; there the two grahas’ places in your kundli decide.

What Parashara says

Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 54, verses 64–69

Parashara reads Surya’s antardasha in Mangal’s mahadasha by where Surya sits, counted from the lagna and from Mangal, and by what it rules; your kundli shows which line is yours, and though the text speaks of a man, its results apply to anyone.

When it goes well

  • When Surya is exalted (in his sign of greatest strength) or in his own sign, or is in a kendra (the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house), a trikona (the 1st, 5th or 9th house) or the 11th house together with the lords of the 10th and the 11th, BPHS gives gains of vehicles, a good name, the birth of a son, growing wealth, harmony in the family, sound health, vigour, recognition from those in power, unusual profits in business, and an audience with those in authority.BPHS 54.64–66

When it is hard

  • When Surya is in the 6th, 8th or 12th from Mangal, the lord of the mahadasha, or is joined with malefic grahas (the harsh planets), BPHS warns of bodily distress, anguish, failure in ventures, and possible trouble in the forehead, fever and dysentery.BPHS 54.67–67½

Parashara’s remedy

To regain good health and wealth, BPHS prescribes the worship of Surya in the prescribed manner.

BPHS 54.68–69

A caution: When Surya rules your 2nd or 7th house (the maraka houses, which the texts link with danger to life), BPHS warns of fever, danger from snakes and poison, and distress to a son, and asks for care. BPHS 54.68–69

Mangal–Surya for your lagna

What Mangal and Surya are for each lagna, as Parashara lists them, and the two read together

Both are favourable for Mesh (Aries), Singh (Leo), Dhanu (Sagittarius) lagna. Both are hard for Mithun (Gemini), Tula (Libra), Kumbh (Aquarius) lagna, where the period asks for the most care. For Vrishabh (Taurus), Kark (Cancer), Meen (Pisces) lagna one is good and the other hard, so the period is mixed. Where one of the two is neutral, the other decides the lean: towards good for Vrishchik (Scorpio) and towards hard for Kanya (Virgo), Makar (Capricorn).

The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:

  • Yogakaraka: the strongest graha a lagna can have: the one Parashara names as bringing yoga, or the one lord of both a kendra (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) and a trikona (1st, 5th, 9th) (34.13)
  • Benefic, Malefic, Neutral: works for the lagna; brings its harder matters; neither
  • Lagna lord: the lagna’s own graha, where the verse calls it neither good nor hard
  • Maraka: a killer Parashara names for the lagna, watched for health and longevity; printed alone, or after another label. It is not always the lord of the 2nd or 7th: where it differs, the line under it gives the verse
  • · Yoga: one of two grahas he says give yoga together for this lagna

From the Janam Kundli report

Mangal mahadasha Mixed

Mangal rules your 2nd house and 7th house and sits in your 7th house: this period brings those matters forward — the money at hand, the family, and speech; the spouse, partners, and those one deals with. Mixed — a kendra or trikona and strong in its sign; on the other side: short of Shadbala and in an enemy's sign in the navamsa.

Surya antardasha Opens

In this kundli it runs 8 June 2042 – 14 October 2042, from the age of 51 to 52. Its length here can differ from the one above by a day, because each kundli’s dates round to the day.

Surya: rules your 11th house, sits in your 9th house. It brings income, gains, elder siblings, and friends who help. Favourable — a kendra or trikona, well placed from Mangal, enough Shadbala and vargottama.

Shadbala: the six-fold measure of a graha’s strength the report computes; “short of Shadbala” means below the strength the texts ask of it. Vargottama: in the same rashi in the birth chart and in the navamsa, which strengthens a graha. Navamsa: the ninth-division chart, read for a graha’s inner strength.

Its nine pratyantars

Mangal–Surya divides into nine pratyantars from Surya’s own on. Each length is counted between the dates beside it, and comes out the same in any kundli give or take a day; the dates and readings are this one’s.

Common questions

How long is Mangal mahadasha Surya antardasha?

4 months 6 days (128 days): Mangal’s 7 years × Surya’s 6 years ÷ 120. It begins 6 years 24 days after a Mangal mahadasha starts.

Is Mangal mahadasha Surya antardasha good or bad?

Not in advance: it turns on your lagna and on where Mangal and Surya sit in your kundli. By Parashara’s lists it is strongest for Mesh (Aries), Singh (Leo), Dhanu (Sagittarius) lagna. It is hardest for Mithun (Gemini), Tula (Libra), Kumbh (Aquarius) lagna. By nature the two are friends. On the Tula lagna kundli above, the Janam Kundli report reads it as “Opens”, as its chip above says.

What are the pratyantars of Mangal mahadasha Surya antardasha?

Nine, in the order Surya, Chandra, Mangal, Rahu, Guru, Shani, Budh, Ketu, Shukra. Each is Mangal–Surya’s length × the pratyantar lord’s years ÷ 120, so the longest is Shukra’s, about 22 days, and the shortest Surya’s, about 6 days.

What upay helps in Surya antardasha?

Parashara gives this antardasha a remedy of its own (BPHS 54.68–69), set out above under “Parashara’s remedy”. The Surya beej mantra, Om Hraam Hreem Hraum Sah Suryaya Namah, and a daan of wheat and jaggery on Sunday are the everyday upay for Mangal–Surya, where your kundli shows the need.
