How the two grahas get on

Mangal counts Ketu neither friend nor enemy (neutral), and Ketu counts Mangal a friend. That natural relationship is where reading a Mangal–Ketu period starts; where Mangal and Ketu sit in your kundli decides what it brings. Texts differ on the friendships of Rahu and Ketu; this is the table the kundli here uses.

What Parashara says

Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 54, verses 48–54

Parashara reads Ketu’s antardasha in Mangal’s mahadasha by where Ketu sits, counted from the lagna and from Mangal, and by what it rules; your kundli shows which line is yours, and though the text speaks of a man, its results apply to anyone.

When it goes well

  • When Ketu is in a kendra (the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house) or a trikona (the 1st, 5th or 9th house), or in the 3rd or 11th house, or is joined with, or receives the drishti (aspect) of, benefic grahas (the gentle planets), BPHS gives the kindness of those in power, gains of wealth and of land, the birth of a son, authority given by government, and gains of livestock.BPHS 54.48–49½
  • When Ketu is strong and, joined with a yogakaraka graha (one that rules both a kendra and a trikona), takes on that role himself, BPHS gives the birth of a son, a growing reputation, the grace of Goddess Lakshmi, gains of wealth through employees, a position of command, friendship with those in power, sacred offerings, and gains of clothes and ornaments.BPHS 54.50–51½

When it is hard

  • When Ketu is in the 6th, 8th or 12th from Mangal, the lord of the mahadasha, BPHS warns of quarrels, tooth trouble, distress from thieves and wild animals, fever, dysentery, a skin disease (the text names leprosy), and distress to spouse and children.BPHS 54.52–54

A caution: When Ketu sits in your 2nd or 7th house (the maraka houses, which the texts link with danger to life), BPHS warns of illness, disgrace, anguish and loss of wealth, and asks for care. BPHS 54.52–54

These verses give no remedy of their own for Ketu’s antardasha in Mangal’s mahadasha; the everyday upay for Ketu are below.

Mangal–Ketu for your lagna

What Mangal is for each lagna, as Parashara lists it; Ketu follows the lord of its rashi

The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:

  • Yogakaraka: the strongest graha a lagna can have: the one Parashara names as bringing yoga, or the one lord of both a kendra (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) and a trikona (1st, 5th, 9th) (34.13)
  • Benefic, Malefic, Neutral: works for the lagna; brings its harder matters; neither
  • Lagna lord: the lagna’s own graha, where the verse calls it neither good nor hard
  • Maraka: a killer Parashara names for the lagna, watched for health and longevity; printed alone, or after another label. It is not always the lord of the 2nd or 7th: where it differs, the line under it gives the verse
  • · Yoga: one of two grahas he says give yoga together for this lagna

Ketu rules no house, so no lagna makes it good or bad by lordship: it gives the results of the house it sits in and of the lord of that rashi. Ketu in each house shows how.

From the Janam Kundli report

Mangal mahadasha Mixed

Mangal rules your 2nd house and 7th house and sits in your 7th house: this period brings those matters forward — the money at hand, the family, and speech; the spouse, partners, and those one deals with. Mixed — a kendra or trikona and strong in its sign; on the other side: short of Shadbala and in an enemy's sign in the navamsa.

Ketu antardasha Mixed

In this kundli it runs 10 November 2040 – 8 April 2041, at the age of 50. Its length here can differ from the one above by a day, because each kundli’s dates round to the day.

Ketu: sits in your 10th house. It brings work, standing, and those senior to you. Mixed — a kendra or trikona and well placed from Mangal; on the other side: its sign's lord weak.

Shadbala: the six-fold measure of a graha’s strength the report computes; “short of Shadbala” means below the strength the texts ask of it. Navamsa: the ninth-division chart, read for a graha’s inner strength.

Its nine pratyantars

Mangal–Ketu divides into nine pratyantars from Ketu’s own on. Each length is counted between the dates beside it, and comes out the same in any kundli give or take a day; the dates and readings are this one’s.

Common questions

How long is Mangal mahadasha Ketu antardasha?

4 months 27 days (149 days): Mangal’s 7 years × Ketu’s 7 years ÷ 120. It begins 4 years 5 months 27 days after a Mangal mahadasha starts.

Is Mangal mahadasha Ketu antardasha good or bad?

Not in advance: it turns on your lagna and on where Mangal and Ketu sit in your kundli. Ketu has no lagna of its own to be good or bad for; it gives the results of the lord of the rashi it sits in. Mangal is favourable for Mesh (Aries), Kark (Cancer), Singh (Leo), Dhanu (Sagittarius), Meen (Pisces) lagna. Mangal is hard for Vrishabh (Taurus), Mithun (Gemini), Kanya (Virgo), Tula (Libra), Makar (Capricorn), Kumbh (Aquarius) lagna. By nature the friendship is uneven: Mangal sees Ketu as neutral, and Ketu sees Mangal as a friend. On the Tula lagna kundli above, the Janam Kundli report reads it as “Mixed”, as its chip above says.

What are the pratyantars of Mangal mahadasha Ketu antardasha?

Nine, in the order Ketu, Shukra, Surya, Chandra, Mangal, Rahu, Guru, Shani, Budh. Each is Mangal–Ketu’s length × the pratyantar lord’s years ÷ 120, so the longest is Shukra’s, about 25 days, and the shortest Surya’s, about 8 days.

What upay helps in Ketu antardasha?

The Ketu beej mantra, Om Sraam Sreem Sraum Sah Ketave Namah, and a daan of a blanket and sesame on Tuesday are the everyday upay for Mangal–Ketu, where your kundli shows the need.
