Mangal mahadasha is about
effort, property and disputes
Mangal · Shani
Shani antardasha in Mangal mahadasha runs 1 year 1 month 9 days. It is the fourth of the nine and begins 2 years 4 months 21 days after the mahadasha starts.
Mangal’s 7 years × Shani’s 19 years ÷ 120
1 year 1 month 9 days · 405 days
Guru antardasha comes before it, and Budh antardasha after it.
Mangal counts Shani neither friend nor enemy (neutral), and Shani counts Mangal an enemy. That natural relationship is where reading a Mangal–Shani period starts; where Mangal and Shani sit in your kundli decides what it brings.
effort, property and disputes
hard work, duty and delay
Mangal–Shani area by area, in plain words, from Parashara’s verses set out below

| Money and property | When it goes well: you gain wealth, grain and cattle; when it is hard: you lose wealth, face poor harvests, and lose on selling farmland. |

| Health | When it is hard: illness, anguish, urinary trouble, rheumatism and even danger to life threaten you. |

Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 54, verses 23–35
Parashara reads Shani’s antardasha in Mangal’s mahadasha by where Shani sits, counted from the lagna and from Mangal, and by what it rules; your kundli shows which line is yours, and though the text speaks of a man, its results apply to anyone.
For relief through the grace of Lord Shiva, BPHS prescribes the Mahamrityunjaya japa, done in the prescribed manner.
BPHS 54.33–35A caution: BPHS counts this a grave maraka period (one the texts link with danger to life) when Shani rules your 2nd or 7th house and is joined with malefic grahas. It warns of great danger, including danger to life, of anger and punishment from those in power, anguish, danger from thieves and fire, loss touching brothers and sisters, discord in the family, loss of livestock, distress to spouse and children, and risk of imprisonment. It asks for great care. BPHS 54.27–29½
What Mangal and Shani are for each lagna, as Parashara lists them, and the two read together
For Mesh (Aries), Vrishabh (Taurus), Kark (Cancer), Singh (Leo), Tula (Libra), Dhanu (Sagittarius), Kumbh (Aquarius), Meen (Pisces) lagna one is good and the other hard, so the period is mixed. Where one of the two is neutral, the other decides the lean: towards hard for Mithun (Gemini), Kanya (Virgo), Vrishchik (Scorpio), Makar (Capricorn).
The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:
| Lagna | Mangal is (lord of) | Shani is (lord of) | Together |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mesh (Aries) | Benefic 1st and 8th | Malefic 10th and 11th | Mixed |
| Vrishabh (Taurus) | Maraka 7th and 12th | Yogakaraka 9th and 10th | Mixed |
| Mithun (Gemini) | Malefic 6th and 11th | Neutral 8th and 9th | Leans hard |
| Kark (Cancer) | Yogakaraka 5th and 10th | Maraka 7th and 8th | Mixed |
| Singh (Leo) | Yogakaraka 4th and 9th | Malefic · Maraka 6th and 7th | Mixed |
| Kanya (Virgo) | Malefic 3rd and 8th | Neutral 5th and 6th | Leans hard |
| Tula (Libra) | Malefic · Maraka 2nd and 7th | Yogakaraka 4th and 5th | Mixed |
| Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Neutral 1st and 6th | Malefic 3rd and 4th | Leans hard |
| Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Benefic 5th and 12th | Maraka 2nd and 3rd | Mixed |
| Makar (Capricorn) | Malefic · Maraka— lord of the 4th and 11th, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.39–40) 4th and 11th | Neutral— the lagna lord; not a killer on his own, the verse says (34.39) 1st and 2nd | Leans hard |
| Kumbh (Aquarius) | Malefic · Maraka— lord of the 3rd and 10th, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.41–42) 3rd and 10th | Benefic— the lagna lord, and one the verse itself names auspicious for Kumbh (34.41) 1st and 12th | Mixed |
| Meen (Pisces) | Benefic · Yoga— gives yoga together with Guru (34.44)— also named a killer, though not one who kills on his own (34.44) 2nd and 9th | Malefic · Maraka— lord of the 11th and 12th, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.43–44) 11th and 12th | Mixed |
“Together” reads Mangal and Shani side by side: both favourable is Favourable; one favourable and one neutral, Leans favourable; one each way, Mixed; one hard and one neutral, Leans hard; both hard, Hard; both neutral, Placement decides. A Yoga pair is two grahas Parashara names together for that lagna.
One kundli that meets Mangal–Shani at 48, read the way the report reads yours
From the Janam Kundli report
Mangal rules your 2nd house and 7th house and sits in your 7th house: this period brings those matters forward — the money at hand, the family, and speech; the spouse, partners, and those one deals with. Mixed — a kendra or trikona and strong in its sign; on the other side: short of Shadbala and in an enemy's sign in the navamsa.
In this kundli it runs 5 October 2038 – 13 November 2039, from the age of 48 to 49. Its length here can differ from the one above by a day, because each kundli’s dates round to the day.
Shani: rules your 4th house and 5th house, sits in your 3rd house. It brings the home, the mother, land and vehicles, and rest; children, study, and creative work. Favourable — lord of a trikona, well placed from Mangal and vargottama; on the other side: short of Shadbala.
Shadbala: the six-fold measure of a graha’s strength the report computes; “short of Shadbala” means below the strength the texts ask of it. Vargottama: in the same rashi in the birth chart and in the navamsa, which strengthens a graha. Navamsa: the ninth-division chart, read for a graha’s inner strength.
Mangal–Shani divides into nine pratyantars from Shani’s own on. Each length is counted between the dates beside it, and comes out the same in any kundli give or take a day; the dates and readings are this one’s.
| Pratyantar | Length | In this kundli | The report reads |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shani | 2 months 3 days | 5 October 2038 – 8 December 2038 | Mixed |
| Budh | 1 month 26 days | 8 December 2038 – 3 February 2039 | Care |
| Ketu | 24 days | 3 February 2039 – 27 February 2039 | Care |
| Shukra | 2 months 8 days | 27 February 2039 – 5 May 2039 | Mixed |
| Surya | 20 days | 5 May 2039 – 25 May 2039 | Opens |
| Chandra | 1 month 3 days | 25 May 2039 – 28 June 2039 | Mixed |
| Mangal | 24 days | 28 June 2039 – 22 July 2039 | Mixed |
| Rahu | 1 month 29 days | 22 July 2039 – 20 September 2039 | Mixed |
| Guru | 1 month 24 days | 20 September 2039 – 13 November 2039 | Mixed |

Suggestions for Shani’s months, which your kundli confirms
Parashara gives Mangal–Shani a remedy of its own (BPHS 54.33–35), set out above under “Parashara’s remedy”; it comes first.
ॐ प्रां प्रीं प्रौं सः शनैश्चराय नमः
Daan: black sesame and iron, on Saturday
What helps and what to keep clear of in any Shani period: Shani mahadasha. Its vrat, ratna, stotra and puja: Shani upay.
1 year 1 month 9 days (405 days): Mangal’s 7 years × Shani’s 19 years ÷ 120. It begins 2 years 4 months 21 days after a Mangal mahadasha starts.
Not in advance: it turns on your lagna and on where Mangal and Shani sit in your kundli. By Parashara’s lists no lagna has both lords favourable. By nature the friendship is uneven: Mangal sees Shani as neutral, and Shani sees Mangal as an enemy. On the Tula lagna kundli above, the Janam Kundli report reads it as “Opens”, as its chip above says.
Nine, in the order Shani, Budh, Ketu, Shukra, Surya, Chandra, Mangal, Rahu, Guru. Each is Mangal–Shani’s length × the pratyantar lord’s years ÷ 120, so the longest is Shukra’s, about 2 months 8 days, and the shortest Surya’s, about 20 days.
Parashara gives this antardasha a remedy of its own (BPHS 54.33–35), set out above under “Parashara’s remedy”. The Shani beej mantra, Om Praam Preem Praum Sah Shanaishcharaya Namah, and a daan of black sesame and iron on Saturday are the everyday upay for Mangal–Shani, where your kundli shows the need.
It follows from the Moon’s nakshatra at your birth. Enter your birth details and the whole 120-year timeline comes with it, each period read for your chart.
