What Surya brings to its own antardasha

Every mahadasha opens with its own lord’s antardasha. For these months Surya rules both levels alone, so its matters show at their plainest.

Surya mahadasha is about

standing, authority and the father

What it touches in life

Surya–Surya area by area, in plain words, from Parashara’s verses set out below

AreaWhat the verses give
Money and propertyWhen it goes well: money and grain increase, bringing a fuller income and a well-stocked home.
HealthWhen Surya rules your 2nd or 7th house, this period carries a maraka warning of danger of untimely death or suffering close to it, calling for care with health.

For work and standing, family, faith and journeys, Parashara’s verses on Surya–Surya give nothing of their own; there Surya’s place in your kundli decides.

What Parashara says

Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 52, verses 1–3

Parashara reads Surya’s own antardasha by where Surya sits from the lagna and by what it rules; your kundli shows which line is yours, and though the text speaks of a man, its results apply to anyone.

When it goes well

  • When Surya is exalted (in his sign of greatest strength), in his own sign, in the 11th house, or in a kendra (the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house) or a trikona (the 1st, 5th or 9th house), BPHS gives gains of wealth and of grain: a fuller income and a well-stocked home.BPHS 52.1–3
  • When Surya is in any house other than those named above, and is neither exalted nor debilitated, BPHS says the results are middling, neither markedly good nor markedly hard.BPHS 52.1–3

When it is hard

  • When Surya is debilitated (in his sign of weakness), or sits in an unfavourable house or sign, BPHS gives adverse results for this period and does not list them one by one.BPHS 52.1–3

Parashara’s remedy

To ease these troubles and protect health, BPHS prescribes the Mahamrityunjaya japa, or the worship of Surya through his mantras and through charity.

BPHS 52.1–3

A caution: BPHS counts this a maraka period (one the texts link with danger to life) when Surya rules your 2nd or 7th house. It warns of danger of untimely death or of suffering close to it, and asks for care with health. BPHS 52.1–3

Surya’s own antardasha for your lagna

What Surya is for each lagna, as Parashara lists it

Surya is favourable for Mesh (Aries), Vrishabh (Taurus), Singh (Leo), Vrishchik (Scorpio), Dhanu (Sagittarius) lagna. Surya is hard for Mithun (Gemini), Kark (Cancer), Tula (Libra), Kumbh (Aquarius), Meen (Pisces) lagna, where the period asks for the most care. For Kanya (Virgo), Makar (Capricorn) lagna Surya is neutral, and where it sits decides the period.

The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:

  • Yogakaraka: the strongest graha a lagna can have: the one Parashara names as bringing yoga, or the one lord of both a kendra (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) and a trikona (1st, 5th, 9th) (34.13)
  • Benefic, Malefic, Neutral: works for the lagna; brings its harder matters; neither
  • Lagna lord: the lagna’s own graha, where the verse calls it neither good nor hard
  • Maraka: a killer Parashara names for the lagna, watched for health and longevity; printed alone, or after another label. It is not always the lord of the 2nd or 7th: where it differs, the line under it gives the verse
  • · Yoga: one of two grahas he says give yoga together for this lagna

From the Janam Kundli report

Surya mahadasha Opens

Surya rules your 11th house and sits in your 9th house: this period brings those matters forward — income, gains, elder siblings, and friends who help. Favourable — a kendra or trikona, enough Shadbala and vargottama.

Surya antardasha Opens

In this kundli it runs 14 May 2020 – 1 September 2020, from the age of 29 to 30. Its length here can differ from the one above by a day, because each kundli’s dates round to the day.

Surya: rules your 11th house, sits in your 9th house. It brings income, gains, elder siblings, and friends who help. Read as Surya mahadasha above: its own sub-period.

Shadbala: the six-fold measure of a graha’s strength the report computes; “short of Shadbala” means below the strength the texts ask of it. Vargottama: in the same rashi in the birth chart and in the navamsa, which strengthens a graha.

Its nine pratyantars

Surya–Surya divides into nine pratyantars from Surya’s own on. Each length is counted between the dates beside it, and comes out the same in any kundli give or take a day; the dates and readings are this one’s.

Common questions

How long is Surya mahadasha Surya antardasha?

3 months 18 days (110 days). It is the first antardasha of every Surya mahadasha.

Is Surya mahadasha Surya antardasha good or bad?

Not in advance: it turns on your lagna and on where Surya sits in your kundli. By Parashara’s lists it is strongest for Mesh (Aries), Vrishabh (Taurus), Singh (Leo), Vrishchik (Scorpio), Dhanu (Sagittarius) lagna. It is hardest for Mithun (Gemini), Kark (Cancer), Tula (Libra), Kumbh (Aquarius), Meen (Pisces) lagna. On the Tula lagna kundli above, the Janam Kundli report reads it as “Opens”, as its chip above says.

What are the pratyantars of Surya mahadasha Surya antardasha?

Nine, in the order Surya, Chandra, Mangal, Rahu, Guru, Shani, Budh, Ketu, Shukra. Each is Surya–Surya’s length × the pratyantar lord’s years ÷ 120, so the longest is Shukra’s, about 19 days, and the shortest Surya’s, about 6 days.

What upay helps in Surya antardasha?

Parashara gives this antardasha a remedy of its own (BPHS 52.1–3), set out above under “Parashara’s remedy”. The Surya beej mantra, Om Hraam Hreem Hraum Sah Suryaya Namah, and a daan of wheat and jaggery on Sunday are the everyday upay for Surya–Surya, where your kundli shows the need.
