Surya mahadasha is about
standing, authority and the father
Surya · Rahu
Rahu antardasha in Surya mahadasha runs 10 months 24 days. It is the fourth of the nine and begins 1 year 1 month 24 days after the mahadasha starts.
Surya’s 6 years × Rahu’s 18 years ÷ 120
10 months 24 days · 329 days
Mangal antardasha comes before it, and Guru antardasha after it.
Surya counts Rahu neither friend nor enemy (neutral), and Rahu counts Surya an enemy. That natural relationship is where reading a Surya–Rahu period starts; where Surya and Rahu sit in your kundli decides what it brings. Texts differ on the friendships of Rahu and Ketu; this is the table the kundli here uses.

Surya–Rahu area by area, in plain words, from Parashara’s verses set out below
| Area | What the verses give |
|---|---|
| Work and standing | When it goes well: favour from those in power, recognition, and good fortune bringing name and fame; when it is hard: loss of position. |
| Money and property | When it is hard: loss of livestock, house and farmland. |
| Family | When it goes well: the birth of a son and happiness in the family, though with some distress to spouse and children. |
| Health | When it goes well: good health and contentment after the first two months; when it is hard: danger from thieves and snakes, injuries, illness, gulma and dysentery. |
For faith and journeys, Parashara’s verses on Surya–Rahu give nothing of their own; there the two grahas’ places in your kundli decide.
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 52, verses 23–31
Parashara reads Rahu’s antardasha in Surya’s mahadasha by where Rahu sits, counted from the lagna and from Surya, and by what it rules; your kundli shows which line is yours, and though the text speaks of a man, its results apply to anyone.
To ease these troubles, or to be spared them altogether, BPHS prescribes worship of Goddess Durga, japa, and giving a black cow or a she-buffalo in charity.
BPHS 52.30–31A caution: BPHS counts this a maraka period (one the texts link with danger to life) when Rahu sits in your 2nd or 7th house, or is joined with the lords of those houses. It warns of danger of untimely death and of danger from snakes, and asks for care. BPHS 52.30–31
What Surya is for each lagna, as Parashara lists it; Rahu follows the lord of its rashi
The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:
| Lagna | Surya is (lord of) |
|---|---|
| Mesh (Aries) | Benefic 5th |
| Vrishabh (Taurus) | Benefic 4th |
| Mithun (Gemini) | Malefic 3rd |
| Kark (Cancer) | Maraka 2nd |
| Singh (Leo) | Benefic 1st |
| Kanya (Virgo) | Neutral— gives results by association (34.32) 12th |
| Tula (Libra) | Malefic 11th |
| Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Yogakaraka— as the verse names it, together with Chandra, the 9th lord (34.35–36) 10th |
| Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Benefic · Yoga— gives yoga together with Budh (34.38) 9th |
| Makar (Capricorn) | Neutral 8th |
| Kumbh (Aquarius) | Maraka 7th |
| Meen (Pisces) | Malefic 6th |
Rahu rules no house, so no lagna makes it good or bad by lordship: it gives the results of the house it sits in and of the lord of that rashi. Rahu in each house shows how.
One kundli that meets Surya–Rahu at 30, read the way the report reads yours
From the Janam Kundli report
Surya rules your 11th house and sits in your 9th house: this period brings those matters forward — income, gains, elder siblings, and friends who help. Favourable — a kendra or trikona, enough Shadbala and vargottama.
In this kundli it runs 8 July 2021 – 2 June 2022, from the age of 30 to 31. Its length here can differ from the one above by a day, because each kundli’s dates round to the day.
Rahu: sits in your 4th house. It brings the home, the mother, land and vehicles, and rest. Mixed — a kendra or trikona; on the other side: at a hard angle from Surya.
Shadbala: the six-fold measure of a graha’s strength the report computes; “short of Shadbala” means below the strength the texts ask of it. Vargottama: in the same rashi in the birth chart and in the navamsa, which strengthens a graha.
Surya–Rahu divides into nine pratyantars from Rahu’s own on. Each length is counted between the dates beside it, and comes out the same in any kundli give or take a day; the dates and readings are this one’s.
| Pratyantar | Length | In this kundli | The report reads |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rahu | 1 month 18 days | 8 July 2021 – 26 August 2021 | Mixed |
| Guru | 1 month 13 days | 26 August 2021 – 9 October 2021 | Care |
| Shani | 1 month 21 days | 9 October 2021 – 30 November 2021 | Mixed |
| Budh | 1 month 17 days | 30 November 2021 – 16 January 2022 | Mixed |
| Ketu | 19 days | 16 January 2022 – 4 February 2022 | Mixed |
| Shukra | 1 month 27 days | 4 February 2022 – 31 March 2022 | Mixed |
| Surya | 16 days | 31 March 2022 – 16 April 2022 | Opens |
| Chandra | 28 days | 16 April 2022 – 14 May 2022 | Mixed |
| Mangal | 19 days | 14 May 2022 – 2 June 2022 | Mixed |

Suggestions for Rahu’s months, which your kundli confirms
Parashara gives Surya–Rahu a remedy of its own (BPHS 52.30–31), set out above under “Parashara’s remedy”; it comes first.
ॐ भ्रां भ्रीं भ्रौं सः राहवे नमः
Daan: a coconut and black cloth, on Saturday
What helps and what to keep clear of in any Rahu period: Rahu mahadasha. Its vrat, ratna, stotra and puja: Rahu upay.
10 months 24 days (329 days): Surya’s 6 years × Rahu’s 18 years ÷ 120. It begins 1 year 1 month 24 days after a Surya mahadasha starts.
Not in advance: it turns on your lagna and on where Surya and Rahu sit in your kundli. Rahu has no lagna of its own to be good or bad for; it gives the results of the lord of the rashi it sits in. Surya is favourable for Mesh (Aries), Vrishabh (Taurus), Singh (Leo), Vrishchik (Scorpio), Dhanu (Sagittarius) lagna. Surya is hard for Mithun (Gemini), Kark (Cancer), Tula (Libra), Kumbh (Aquarius), Meen (Pisces) lagna. By nature the friendship is uneven: Surya sees Rahu as neutral, and Rahu sees Surya as an enemy. On the Tula lagna kundli above, the Janam Kundli report reads it as “Mixed”, as its chip above says.
Nine, in the order Rahu, Guru, Shani, Budh, Ketu, Shukra, Surya, Chandra, Mangal. Each is Surya–Rahu’s length × the pratyantar lord’s years ÷ 120, so the longest is Shukra’s, about 1 month 27 days, and the shortest Surya’s, about 16 days.
Parashara gives this antardasha a remedy of its own (BPHS 52.30–31), set out above under “Parashara’s remedy”. The Rahu beej mantra, Om Bhraam Bhreem Bhraum Sah Rahave Namah, and a daan of a coconut and black cloth on Saturday are the everyday upay for Surya–Rahu, where your kundli shows the need.
It follows from the Moon’s nakshatra at your birth. Enter your birth details and the whole 120-year timeline comes with it, each period read for your chart.
