Surya mahadasha is about
standing, authority and the father
Surya · Chandra
Chandra antardasha in Surya mahadasha runs 6 months. It is the second of the nine and begins 3 months 18 days after the mahadasha starts.
Surya’s 6 years × Chandra’s 10 years ÷ 120
6 months · 183 days
Surya antardasha comes before it, and Mangal antardasha after it.
Surya and Chandra are friends to each other. That natural relationship is where reading a Surya–Chandra period starts; where Surya and Chandra sit in your kundli decides what it brings.
standing, authority and the father
the mind, the mother and the home
Surya–Chandra area by area, in plain words, from Parashara’s verses set out below
| Area | What the verses give |
|---|---|
| Work and standing | When it goes well: favour from government, a rise to authority or command, and fulfilled hopes; when it is hard: failure in ventures, friction with those in power, loss of servants, and loss of position. |
| Money and property | When it goes well: gains of wealth, property, clothes, land and vehicles; when it is hard: loss of wealth and grain. |
| Family | When it goes well: marriage, the birth of children and grandchildren, and more joy from spouse and children; when it is hard: distress to spouse and children and disputes with relatives. |
| Health | When it is hard: mental anguish, illness, danger from water, bodily pain and urinary trouble; poor food and living away from home are also warned of. |
For faith and journeys, Parashara’s verses on Surya–Chandra give nothing of their own; there the two grahas’ places in your kundli decide.
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 52, verses 4–14
Parashara reads Chandra’s antardasha in Surya’s mahadasha by where Chandra sits, counted from the lagna and from Surya, and by what it rules; your kundli shows which line is yours, and though the text speaks of a man, its results apply to anyone.
For peace and comfort, BPHS prescribes giving a white cow and a she-buffalo in charity.
BPHS 52.13–14A caution: BPHS counts this a maraka period (one the texts link with danger to life) when Chandra rules a maraka house, your 2nd or 7th. It warns of danger of untimely death and asks for care with health. BPHS 52.13–14
What Surya and Chandra are for each lagna, as Parashara lists them, and the two read together
Both are favourable for Vrishchik (Scorpio) lagna. Both are hard for Mithun (Gemini), Kumbh (Aquarius) lagna, where the period asks for the most care. For Vrishabh (Taurus), Kark (Cancer), Singh (Leo), Meen (Pisces) lagna one is good and the other hard, so the period is mixed. Where one of the two is neutral, the other decides the lean: towards good for Mesh (Aries), Dhanu (Sagittarius) and towards hard for Kanya (Virgo), Tula (Libra), Makar (Capricorn).
The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:
| Lagna | Surya is (lord of) | Chandra is (lord of) | Together |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mesh (Aries) | Benefic 5th | Neutral 4th | Leans favourable |
| Vrishabh (Taurus) | Benefic 4th | Malefic · Maraka— lord of the 3rd only, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.23–24) 3rd | Mixed |
| Mithun (Gemini) | Malefic 3rd | Maraka 2nd | Hard |
| Kark (Cancer) | Maraka 2nd | Benefic 1st | Mixed |
| Singh (Leo) | Benefic 1st | Maraka— lord of the 12th only, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.29–30) 12th | Mixed |
| Kanya (Virgo) | Neutral— gives results by association (34.32) 12th | Malefic 11th | Leans hard |
| Tula (Libra) | Malefic 11th | Neutral · Yoga— gives yoga together with Budh (34.34) 10th | Leans hard |
| Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Yogakaraka— as the verse names it, together with Chandra, the 9th lord (34.35–36) 10th | Yogakaraka— as the verse names it, together with Surya, the 10th lord (34.35–36) 9th | Favourable |
| Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Benefic · Yoga— gives yoga together with Budh (34.38) 9th | Neutral 8th | Leans favourable |
| Makar (Capricorn) | Neutral 8th | Malefic— lord of the 7th, but the killer the verse names for this lagna is Mangal (34.39–40) 7th | Leans hard |
| Kumbh (Aquarius) | Maraka 7th | Malefic 6th | Hard |
| Meen (Pisces) | Malefic 6th | Benefic 5th | Mixed |
“Together” reads Surya and Chandra side by side: both favourable is Favourable; one favourable and one neutral, Leans favourable; one each way, Mixed; one hard and one neutral, Leans hard; both hard, Hard; both neutral, Placement decides. A Yoga pair is two grahas Parashara names together for that lagna.
One kundli that meets Surya–Chandra at 30, read the way the report reads yours
From the Janam Kundli report
Surya rules your 11th house and sits in your 9th house: this period brings those matters forward — income, gains, elder siblings, and friends who help. Favourable — a kendra or trikona, enough Shadbala and vargottama.
In this kundli it runs 1 September 2020 – 2 March 2021, at the age of 30. Its length here can differ from the one above by a day, because each kundli’s dates round to the day.
Chandra: rules your 10th house, sits in your 6th house. It brings work, standing, and those senior to you. Mixed — well placed from Surya and vargottama; on the other side: a difficult house and short of Shadbala.
Shadbala: the six-fold measure of a graha’s strength the report computes; “short of Shadbala” means below the strength the texts ask of it. Vargottama: in the same rashi in the birth chart and in the navamsa, which strengthens a graha.
Surya–Chandra divides into nine pratyantars from Chandra’s own on. Each length is counted between the dates beside it, and comes out the same in any kundli give or take a day; the dates and readings are this one’s.
| Pratyantar | Length | In this kundli | The report reads |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chandra | 15 days | 1 September 2020 – 16 September 2020 | Care |
| Mangal | 11 days | 16 September 2020 – 27 September 2020 | Mixed |
| Rahu | 27 days | 27 September 2020 – 24 October 2020 | Opens |
| Guru | 24 days | 24 October 2020 – 17 November 2020 | Mixed |
| Shani | 29 days | 17 November 2020 – 16 December 2020 | Opens |
| Budh | 26 days | 16 December 2020 – 11 January 2021 | Mixed |
| Ketu | 11 days | 11 January 2021 – 22 January 2021 | Mixed |
| Shukra | 30 days | 22 January 2021 – 21 February 2021 | Mixed |
| Surya | 9 days | 21 February 2021 – 2 March 2021 | Opens |

Suggestions for Chandra’s months, which your kundli confirms
Parashara gives Surya–Chandra a remedy of its own (BPHS 52.13–14), set out above under “Parashara’s remedy”; it comes first.
ॐ श्रां श्रीं श्रौं सः चन्द्राय नमः
Daan: rice and white cloth, on Monday
What helps and what to keep clear of in any Chandra period: Chandra mahadasha. Its vrat, ratna, stotra and puja: Chandra upay.
6 months (183 days): Surya’s 6 years × Chandra’s 10 years ÷ 120. It begins 3 months 18 days after a Surya mahadasha starts.
Not in advance: it turns on your lagna and on where Surya and Chandra sit in your kundli. By Parashara’s lists it is strongest for Vrishchik (Scorpio) lagna. It is hardest for Mithun (Gemini), Kumbh (Aquarius) lagna. By nature the two are friends. On the Tula lagna kundli above, the Janam Kundli report reads it as “Mixed”, as its chip above says.
Nine, in the order Chandra, Mangal, Rahu, Guru, Shani, Budh, Ketu, Shukra, Surya. Each is Surya–Chandra’s length × the pratyantar lord’s years ÷ 120, so the longest is Shukra’s, about 30 days, and the shortest Surya’s, about 9 days.
Parashara gives this antardasha a remedy of its own (BPHS 52.13–14), set out above under “Parashara’s remedy”. The Chandra beej mantra, Om Shraam Shreem Shraum Sah Chandraya Namah, and a daan of rice and white cloth on Monday are the everyday upay for Surya–Chandra, where your kundli shows the need.
It follows from the Moon’s nakshatra at your birth. Enter your birth details and the whole 120-year timeline comes with it, each period read for your chart.
