Surya mahadasha is about
standing, authority and the father
Surya · Shukra
Shukra antardasha in Surya mahadasha runs 1 year. It is the ninth of the nine and begins 5 years after the mahadasha starts.
Surya’s 6 years × Shukra’s 20 years ÷ 120
1 year · 365 days
Ketu antardasha comes before it, and it closes the mahadasha; Chandra mahadasha begins when it ends. The last months of a mahadasha, where one period hands over to the next, are called dasha sandhi (the junction), and the tradition reads them with care.
Surya and Shukra are enemies to each other. That natural relationship is where reading a Surya–Shukra period starts; where Surya and Shukra sit in your kundli decides what it brings.
standing, authority and the father
marriage, comforts and the arts
Surya–Shukra area by area, in plain words, from Parashara’s verses set out below
| Area | What the verses give |
|---|---|
| Work and standing | When it goes well: meetings with those in power, a rise to authority, dignity and a good name; when it is hard: the displeasure of power, lost position and lost good name. |
| Money and property | When it goes well: gains of property, pearls and jewels, clothes, livestock, wealth, grain and vehicles. |
| Family | When it goes well: marriage and the happiness hoped for from one's wife, with happy occasions at home; when it is hard: distress to spouse and children and friction with relatives. |
| Health | When it is hard: mental anguish, bodily pain and illness, and, when Shukra joins the lord of the 6th or 8th house, danger of untimely death. |
For faith and journeys, Parashara’s verses on Surya–Shukra give nothing of their own; there the two grahas’ places in your kundli decide.
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 52, verses 65–73
Parashara reads Shukra’s antardasha in Surya’s mahadasha by where Shukra sits, counted from the lagna and from Surya, and by what it rules; your kundli shows which line is yours, and though the text speaks of a man, its results apply to anyone.
For relief, BPHS prescribes the Mahamrityunjaya japa and Rudra japa, and giving a tawny cow or a she-buffalo in charity.
BPHS 52.69–73A caution: When Shukra rules your 2nd or 7th house, the maraka houses, which the texts link with danger to life, BPHS warns of bodily pain and illness. When Shukra is joined with the lord of the 6th or 8th house, it warns of danger of untimely death. It asks for care with health. BPHS 52.69–73
What Surya and Shukra are for each lagna, as Parashara lists them, and the two read together
Both are hard for Kark (Cancer), Meen (Pisces) lagna, where the period asks for the most care. For Mesh (Aries), Vrishabh (Taurus), Mithun (Gemini), Singh (Leo), Vrishchik (Scorpio), Dhanu (Sagittarius), Kumbh (Aquarius) lagna one is good and the other hard, so the period is mixed. Where one of the two is neutral, the other decides the lean: towards good for Kanya (Virgo), Makar (Capricorn) and towards hard for Tula (Libra).
The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:
| Lagna | Surya is (lord of) | Shukra is (lord of) | Together |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mesh (Aries) | Benefic 5th | Malefic · Maraka 2nd and 7th | Mixed |
| Vrishabh (Taurus) | Benefic 4th | Malefic · Maraka— the lagna lord, but also lord of the 6th: a malefic and a killer (34.23–24) 1st and 6th | Mixed |
| Mithun (Gemini) | Malefic 3rd | Benefic 5th and 12th | Mixed |
| Kark (Cancer) | Maraka 2nd | Malefic 4th and 11th | Hard |
| Singh (Leo) | Benefic 1st | Malefic 3rd and 10th | Mixed |
| Kanya (Virgo) | Neutral— gives results by association (34.32) 12th | Benefic · Maraka · Yoga— gives yoga together with Budh (34.32) 2nd and 9th | Leans favourable |
| Tula (Libra) | Malefic 11th | Neutral— the lagna lord, which the verse calls neutral (34.34) 1st and 8th | Leans hard |
| Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Yogakaraka— as the verse names it, together with Chandra, the 9th lord (34.35–36) 10th | Malefic · Maraka 7th and 12th | Mixed |
| Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Benefic · Yoga— gives yoga together with Budh (34.38) 9th | Malefic · Maraka— lord of the 6th and 11th, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.37–38) 6th and 11th | Mixed |
| Makar (Capricorn) | Neutral 8th | Yogakaraka 5th and 10th | Leans favourable |
| Kumbh (Aquarius) | Maraka 7th | Yogakaraka 4th and 9th | Mixed |
| Meen (Pisces) | Malefic 6th | Malefic 3rd and 8th | Hard |
“Together” reads Surya and Shukra side by side: both favourable is Favourable; one favourable and one neutral, Leans favourable; one each way, Mixed; one hard and one neutral, Leans hard; both hard, Hard; both neutral, Placement decides. A Yoga pair is two grahas Parashara names together for that lagna.
One kundli that meets Surya–Shukra at 34, read the way the report reads yours
From the Janam Kundli report
Surya rules your 11th house and sits in your 9th house: this period brings those matters forward — income, gains, elder siblings, and friends who help. Favourable — a kendra or trikona, enough Shadbala and vargottama.
In this kundli it runs 14 May 2025 – 15 May 2026, from the age of 34 to 35. Its length here can differ from the one above by a day, because each kundli’s dates round to the day.
Shukra: rules your 1st house and 8th house, sits in your 9th house. It brings the body, health, temperament and the self; hidden matters, delay, and other people's money. Mixed — a kendra or trikona and strong in the navamsa; on the other side: short of Shadbala.
Shadbala: the six-fold measure of a graha’s strength the report computes; “short of Shadbala” means below the strength the texts ask of it. Vargottama: in the same rashi in the birth chart and in the navamsa, which strengthens a graha. Navamsa: the ninth-division chart, read for a graha’s inner strength.
Surya–Shukra divides into nine pratyantars from Shukra’s own on. Each length is counted between the dates beside it, and comes out the same in any kundli give or take a day; the dates and readings are this one’s.
| Pratyantar | Length | In this kundli | The report reads |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shukra | 2 months | 14 May 2025 – 14 July 2025 | Mixed |
| Surya | 18 days | 14 July 2025 – 1 August 2025 | Opens |
| Chandra | 1 month | 1 August 2025 – 1 September 2025 | Mixed |
| Mangal | 21 days | 1 September 2025 – 22 September 2025 | Mixed |
| Rahu | 1 month 25 days | 22 September 2025 – 16 November 2025 | Mixed |
| Guru | 1 month 19 days | 16 November 2025 – 4 January 2026 | Care |
| Shani | 1 month 27 days | 4 January 2026 – 3 March 2026 | Opens |
| Budh | 1 month 20 days | 3 March 2026 – 23 April 2026 | Care |
| Ketu | 22 days | 23 April 2026 – 15 May 2026 | Mixed |

Suggestions for Shukra’s months, which your kundli confirms
Parashara gives Surya–Shukra a remedy of its own (BPHS 52.69–73), set out above under “Parashara’s remedy”; it comes first.
ॐ द्रां द्रीं द्रौं सः शुक्राय नमः
Daan: white cloth and rice, on Friday
What helps and what to keep clear of in any Shukra period: Shukra mahadasha. Its vrat, ratna, stotra and puja: Shukra upay.
1 year (365 days): Surya’s 6 years × Shukra’s 20 years ÷ 120. It begins 5 years after a Surya mahadasha starts.
Not in advance: it turns on your lagna and on where Surya and Shukra sit in your kundli. By Parashara’s lists no lagna has both lords favourable. It is hardest for Kark (Cancer), Meen (Pisces) lagna. By nature the two are enemies. On the Tula lagna kundli above, the Janam Kundli report reads it as “Mixed”, as its chip above says.
Nine, in the order Shukra, Surya, Chandra, Mangal, Rahu, Guru, Shani, Budh, Ketu. Each is Surya–Shukra’s length × the pratyantar lord’s years ÷ 120, so the longest is Shukra’s, about 2 months, and the shortest Surya’s, about 18 days.
Parashara gives this antardasha a remedy of its own (BPHS 52.69–73), set out above under “Parashara’s remedy”. The Shukra beej mantra, Om Draam Dreem Draum Sah Shukraya Namah, and a daan of white cloth and rice on Friday are the everyday upay for Surya–Shukra, where your kundli shows the need.
It follows from the Moon’s nakshatra at your birth. Enter your birth details and the whole 120-year timeline comes with it, each period read for your chart.
