How the two grahas get on

Surya and Shani are enemies to each other. That natural relationship is where reading a Surya–Shani period starts; where Surya and Shani sit in your kundli decides what it brings.

Surya mahadasha is about

standing, authority and the father

Shani antardasha adds

hard work, duty and delay

What it touches in life

Surya–Shani area by area, in plain words, from Parashara’s verses set out below

AreaWhat the verses give
Work and standingWhen it goes well: victory over opponents and recognition from those in power, bringing renown; when it is hard: losses in your ventures.
Money and propertyWhen it goes well: some gain of grain and growing property, with money from many sources; when it is hard: loss of wealth.
FamilyWhen it goes well: happy occasions such as a marriage at home; when it is hard: quarrels and disputes with relatives, separation from parents, and loss of friends.
HealthWhen it goes well: well-being; when it is hard: rheumatism and aches, fever, a dysentery-like illness, and, when Shani rules your 2nd or 7th house, danger of untimely death.

For faith and journeys, Parashara’s verses on Surya–Shani give nothing of their own; there the two grahas’ places in your kundli decide.

What Parashara says

Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 52, verses 40–47

Parashara reads Shani’s antardasha in Surya’s mahadasha by where Shani sits, counted from the lagna and from Surya, and by what it rules; your kundli shows which line is yours, and though the text speaks of a man, its results apply to anyone.

When it goes well

  • When Shani is in a kendra (the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house) or a trikona (the 1st, 5th or 9th house) from the lagna (ascendant), BPHS gives victory over opponents, full enjoyment, some gain of grain, and happy occasions such as a marriage at home.BPHS 52.40–42
  • When Shani is exalted (in his sign of greatest strength), in his own sign or in a friendly sign, and is joined with a friendly graha, BPHS gives well-being, more property, recognition from those in power, renown across the country, and money from many sources.BPHS 52.40–42

When it is hard

  • When Shani is in the 8th or 12th from Surya, the lord of the mahadasha, or is joined by malefic grahas (the harsh planets), BPHS warns of rheumatism and aches, fever, a dysentery-like illness, risk of imprisonment, losses in ventures, loss of wealth, quarrels, and disputes with relatives who share the property and with other claimants.BPHS 52.43–44
  • When Shani is debilitated (in his sign of weakness), BPHS warns, besides the other hard results, of separation from parents and of a wandering life.BPHS 52.45–47

Parashara’s remedy

For relief, and for happiness and gains of wealth and property, BPHS prescribes giving a black cow, a buffalo and a goat in charity, and the Mahamrityunjaya japa.

BPHS 52.45–47

A caution: BPHS counts this a maraka period (one the texts link with danger to life) when Shani rules your 2nd or 7th house. It warns of danger of untimely death and asks for care with health. BPHS 52.45–47

Surya–Shani for your lagna

What Surya and Shani are for each lagna, as Parashara lists them, and the two read together

Both are favourable for Vrishabh (Taurus) lagna. Both are hard for Kark (Cancer), Meen (Pisces) lagna, where the period asks for the most care. For Mesh (Aries), Singh (Leo), Tula (Libra), Vrishchik (Scorpio), Dhanu (Sagittarius), Kumbh (Aquarius) lagna one is good and the other hard, so the period is mixed. Where one of the two is neutral, the other decides the lean: towards hard for Mithun (Gemini). For Kanya (Virgo), Makar (Capricorn) lagna both are neutral, and where Surya and Shani sit decides it.

The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:

  • Yogakaraka: the strongest graha a lagna can have: the one Parashara names as bringing yoga, or the one lord of both a kendra (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) and a trikona (1st, 5th, 9th) (34.13)
  • Benefic, Malefic, Neutral: works for the lagna; brings its harder matters; neither
  • Lagna lord: the lagna’s own graha, where the verse calls it neither good nor hard
  • Maraka: a killer Parashara names for the lagna, watched for health and longevity; printed alone, or after another label. It is not always the lord of the 2nd or 7th: where it differs, the line under it gives the verse
  • · Yoga: one of two grahas he says give yoga together for this lagna

From the Janam Kundli report

Surya mahadasha Opens

Surya rules your 11th house and sits in your 9th house: this period brings those matters forward — income, gains, elder siblings, and friends who help. Favourable — a kendra or trikona, enough Shadbala and vargottama.

Shani antardasha Opens

In this kundli it runs 21 March 2023 – 2 March 2024, from the age of 32 to 33. Its length here can differ from the one above by a day, because each kundli’s dates round to the day.

Shani: rules your 4th house and 5th house, sits in your 3rd house. It brings the home, the mother, land and vehicles, and rest; children, study, and creative work. Favourable — lord of a trikona, well placed from Surya and vargottama; on the other side: short of Shadbala.

Shadbala: the six-fold measure of a graha’s strength the report computes; “short of Shadbala” means below the strength the texts ask of it. Vargottama: in the same rashi in the birth chart and in the navamsa, which strengthens a graha.

Its nine pratyantars

Surya–Shani divides into nine pratyantars from Shani’s own on. Each length is counted between the dates beside it, and comes out the same in any kundli give or take a day; the dates and readings are this one’s.

Common questions

How long is Surya mahadasha Shani antardasha?

11 months 12 days (347 days): Surya’s 6 years × Shani’s 19 years ÷ 120. It begins 2 years 10 months 6 days after a Surya mahadasha starts.

Is Surya mahadasha Shani antardasha good or bad?

Not in advance: it turns on your lagna and on where Surya and Shani sit in your kundli. By Parashara’s lists it is strongest for Vrishabh (Taurus) lagna. It is hardest for Kark (Cancer), Meen (Pisces) lagna. By nature the two are enemies. On the Tula lagna kundli above, the Janam Kundli report reads it as “Opens”, as its chip above says.

What are the pratyantars of Surya mahadasha Shani antardasha?

Nine, in the order Shani, Budh, Ketu, Shukra, Surya, Chandra, Mangal, Rahu, Guru. Each is Surya–Shani’s length × the pratyantar lord’s years ÷ 120, so the longest is Shukra’s, about 1 month 27 days, and the shortest Surya’s, about 18 days.

What upay helps in Shani antardasha?

Parashara gives this antardasha a remedy of its own (BPHS 52.45–47), set out above under “Parashara’s remedy”. The Shani beej mantra, Om Praam Preem Praum Sah Shanaishcharaya Namah, and a daan of black sesame and iron on Saturday are the everyday upay for Surya–Shani, where your kundli shows the need.
