What Parashara says

Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 52, verses 32–39

Parashara reads Guru’s antardasha in Surya’s mahadasha by where Guru sits, counted from the lagna and from Surya, and by what it rules; your kundli shows which line is yours, and though the text speaks of a man, its results apply to anyone.

When it goes well

  • When Guru is in a kendra (the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house) or a trikona (the 1st, 5th or 9th house) from the lagna (ascendant), or is exalted, in his own sign, or in his own varga (his own divisions in the divisional charts), BPHS gives marriage, favour from government or those in power, gains of wealth and grain, the birth of a son, hopes fulfilled through the kindness of those in authority, and gains of clothes.BPHS 52.32–33½
  • When Guru rules the 9th or the 10th house, BPHS gives a rise to authority or a position of command, the comfort of vehicles, and a gain in position.BPHS 52.34–36
  • When Guru is well placed from Surya, the lord of the mahadasha, BPHS gives better fortune, giving in charity, a religious bent, worship of the deities, devotion to one's guru, and fulfilment of one's hopes.BPHS 52.34–36

When it is hard

  • When Guru is in the 6th or 8th from Surya, the lord of the mahadasha, or is joined by malefic grahas (the harsh planets), BPHS warns of distress to spouse and children, bodily pain, the displeasure of those in power, aims left unmet, loss of wealth through wrong deeds, and mental worry.BPHS 52.37–39

Parashara’s remedy

To ease these troubles and to gain health and happiness, BPHS prescribes giving gold and a tawny (kapila) cow in charity, and the worship of one's Ishta Devata (chosen deity).

BPHS 52.37–39

Surya–Guru for your lagna

What Surya and Guru are for each lagna, as Parashara lists them, and the two read together

Both are favourable for Mesh (Aries), Singh (Leo), Vrishchik (Scorpio) lagna. Both are hard for Mithun (Gemini), Tula (Libra), Kumbh (Aquarius) lagna, where the period asks for the most care. For Vrishabh (Taurus), Kark (Cancer), Meen (Pisces) lagna one is good and the other hard, so the period is mixed. Where one of the two is neutral, the other decides the lean: towards good for Dhanu (Sagittarius) and towards hard for Kanya (Virgo), Makar (Capricorn).

The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:

  • Yogakaraka: the strongest graha a lagna can have: the one Parashara names as bringing yoga, or the one lord of both a kendra (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) and a trikona (1st, 5th, 9th) (34.13)
  • Benefic, Malefic, Neutral: works for the lagna; brings its harder matters; neither
  • Lagna lord: the lagna’s own graha, where the verse calls it neither good nor hard
  • Maraka: a killer Parashara names for the lagna, watched for health and longevity; printed alone, or after another label. It is not always the lord of the 2nd or 7th: where it differs, the line under it gives the verse
  • · Yoga: one of two grahas he says give yoga together for this lagna

From the Janam Kundli report

Surya mahadasha Opens

Surya rules your 11th house and sits in your 9th house: this period brings those matters forward — income, gains, elder siblings, and friends who help. Favourable — a kendra or trikona, enough Shadbala and vargottama.

Guru antardasha Care

In this kundli it runs 2 June 2022 – 21 March 2023, from the age of 31 to 32. Its length here can differ from the one above by a day, because each kundli’s dates round to the day.

Guru: rules your 3rd house and 6th house, sits in your 9th house. It brings effort, courage, younger siblings and short journeys; illness, debt, disputes, and thankless work. Go carefully — short of Shadbala, in an enemy's sign in the navamsa, in an enemy's sign and combust; on the other side: a kendra or trikona and vargottama.

Shadbala: the six-fold measure of a graha’s strength the report computes; “short of Shadbala” means below the strength the texts ask of it. Vargottama: in the same rashi in the birth chart and in the navamsa, which strengthens a graha. Navamsa: the ninth-division chart, read for a graha’s inner strength. Combust: so close to the Sun that its strength is lost in the Sun’s rays.

Its nine pratyantars

Surya–Guru divides into nine pratyantars from Guru’s own on. Each length is counted between the dates beside it, and comes out the same in any kundli give or take a day; the dates and readings are this one’s.

Common questions

How long is Surya mahadasha Guru antardasha?

9 months 18 days (292 days): Surya’s 6 years × Guru’s 16 years ÷ 120. It begins 2 years 18 days after a Surya mahadasha starts.

Is Surya mahadasha Guru antardasha good or bad?

Not in advance: it turns on your lagna and on where Surya and Guru sit in your kundli. By Parashara’s lists it is strongest for Mesh (Aries), Singh (Leo), Vrishchik (Scorpio) lagna. It is hardest for Mithun (Gemini), Tula (Libra), Kumbh (Aquarius) lagna. By nature the two are friends. On the Tula lagna kundli above, the Janam Kundli report reads it as “Care”, as its chip above says.

What are the pratyantars of Surya mahadasha Guru antardasha?

Nine, in the order Guru, Shani, Budh, Ketu, Shukra, Surya, Chandra, Mangal, Rahu. Each is Surya–Guru’s length × the pratyantar lord’s years ÷ 120, so the longest is Shukra’s, about 1 month 18 days, and the shortest Surya’s, about 15 days.

What upay helps in Guru antardasha?

Parashara gives this antardasha a remedy of its own (BPHS 52.37–39), set out above under “Parashara’s remedy”. The Guru beej mantra, Om Graam Greem Graum Sah Gurave Namah, and a daan of chana dal and turmeric on Thursday are the everyday upay for Surya–Guru, where your kundli shows the need.
