What Chandra gives in the 4th house by Lal Kitab and by Phaladeepika, its upay, the houses it looks at from there, and what it means for each lagna.
The Moon in the 4th house (pakka ghar, the house Lal Kitab gives a graha as its own, where it is steadiest) gives immense happiness from the mother, property, vehicles, and domestic peace. It is a very strong position.
Lal Kitab reads Chandra in the 4th house by the house, not by your lagna; Parashara’s view for your own lagna is further down, and Phaladeepika and Brihat Jataka may differ. How Lal Kitab and Parashara differ · Lal Kitab: pakka ghar, rin and upay
Keep a silver pot of water near your bed head.
This is Lal Kitab’s one upay for Chandra in the 4th house, to keep its good results strong; it is a suggestion, and your whole kundli may call for another. All upay for Chandra
Phaladeepika 8.6 holds that Chandra (Moon) in the 4th house (the house of home, mother and comforts) brings happiness and the enjoyment of life's pleasures. The text adds generosity in giving, friends, vehicles and renown.
How much of this holds turns on the rest of the chart: the rashi Chandra sits in, the 4th house’s lord and the grahas with it or looking at it. The old texts speak of a man; their readings apply to anyone.
BJ 20.4: the Moon in the 4th makes one happy.
Its results show most in Chandra’s own mahadasha (10 years) and in its antardashas inside the others. The 4th house’s matters also come forward in the periods of the house’s lord, which depends on your lagna.
Its drishti (a graha’s glance: the houses it looks at feel its influence) from the 4th, by the rules our kundli reading weighs houses with:
The 4th house, Sukha bhava, rules mother, home, property, vehicles and peace of mind; it is a kendra (one of the four angles of the chart, the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th houses, where a graha acts with most force); its karaka (the graha that naturally signifies a house’s matters, whatever the lagna) is Chandra. The 4th house, and every graha in it
| Lagna | Chandra sits in | Its state there | Lord of your | For this lagna |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mesh (Aries) | Kark (Cancer) | Own rashi | 4th | Neutral |
| Vrishabh (Taurus) | Singh (Leo) | Friendly | 3rd | Malefic · Maraka— lord of the 3rd only, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.23–24) |
| Mithun (Gemini) | Kanya (Virgo) | Friendly | 2nd | Maraka |
| Kark (Cancer) | Tula (Libra) | Neutral | 1st | Benefic |
| Singh (Leo) | Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Debilitated | 12th | Maraka— lord of the 12th only, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.29–30) |
| Kanya (Virgo) | Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Neutral | 11th | Malefic |
| Tula (Libra) | Makar (Capricorn) | Neutral | 10th | Neutral · Yoga— gives yoga together with Budh (34.34) |
| Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Kumbh (Aquarius) | Neutral | 9th | Yogakaraka— as the verse names it, together with Surya, the 10th lord (34.35–36) |
| Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Meen (Pisces) | Neutral | 8th | Neutral |
| Makar (Capricorn) | Mesh (Aries) | Neutral | 7th | Malefic— lord of the 7th, but the killer the verse names for this lagna is Mangal (34.39–40) |
| Kumbh (Aquarius) | Vrishabh (Taurus) | Exalted | 6th | Malefic |
| Meen (Pisces) | Mithun (Gemini) | Friendly | 5th | Benefic |
Chandra’s state in each rashi, and the houses it rules for each lagna, as our free kundli reads them (BPHS chapter 34); each house links to what Parashara says of its lord sitting in the 4th. “Its state there” is how that rashi treats Chandra: exalted, own, friendly, neutral (sam), enemy or debilitated. “For this lagna” is Parashara’s verdict on the houses it rules. The two answer different questions.
The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:
Take Kumbh lagna. Chandra sits in Vrishabh there (exalted) and rules your 6th house, which makes it a malefic for Kumbh lagna (BPHS 34). A graha hard for the lagna and strong in its rashi gives that harder side with force. The Lal Kitab reading above is the same for every lagna; this row is the part that changes with yours.
By Brihat Jataka 20.11, Chandra in the 4th house gives its good in full for Kumbh lagna, half for Mesh lagna, a quarter for Vrishabh, Mithun and Meen lagna and none for Singh lagna, by the rashi it sits in. The verse gives no share for a neutral rashi, which is where it sits for Kark, Kanya, Tula, Vrishchik, Dhanu and Makar lagna. BJ 20.10–11
Not the birth placement above: here Chandra is moving through the 4th counted from your Moon rashi. Phaladeepika does not count the 4th among Chandra’s good transit houses (all twelve, on the Chandra page). Our Monthly Prediction reads it as mixed: feeling sensitive, home and mother on the mind.
Lal Kitab counts it a good placement, one of the 8 houses where Chandra does well (with the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th). By its rashi, it is strongest for Mesh and Kumbh lagna; it is debilitated for Singh lagna.
Lal Kitab’s upay for it: Keep a silver pot of water near your bed head.
