Ketu mahadasha is about
letting go, the inward and the sudden
Ketu · Shani
Shani antardasha in Ketu mahadasha runs 1 year 1 month 9 days. It is the eighth of the nine and begins 4 years 10 months 24 days after the mahadasha starts.
Ketu’s 7 years × Shani’s 19 years ÷ 120
1 year 1 month 9 days · 405 days
Guru antardasha comes before it, and Budh antardasha after it.
Ketu and Shani are neither friends nor enemies to each other (neutral). That natural relationship is where reading a Ketu–Shani period starts; where Ketu and Shani sit in your kundli decides what it brings. Texts differ on the friendships of Rahu and Ketu; this is the table the kundli here uses.

Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 59, verses 61–68
Parashara reads Shani’s antardasha in Ketu’s mahadasha by where Shani sits, counted from the lagna and from Ketu, and by what it rules; your kundli shows which line is yours, and though the text speaks of a man, its results apply to anyone.
For relief, BPHS prescribes a havan (fire offering) with sesame seeds (til) and giving a black cow or a female buffalo in charity.
BPHS 59.68A caution: When Shani rules your 2nd or 7th house, BPHS counts this a maraka period (one the texts link with danger to life). It warns of the danger of an untimely death and asks for care with health. BPHS 59.68
What Shani is for each lagna, as Parashara lists it; Ketu follows the lord of its rashi
The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:
| Lagna | Shani is (lord of) |
|---|---|
| Mesh (Aries) | Malefic 10th and 11th |
| Vrishabh (Taurus) | Yogakaraka 9th and 10th |
| Mithun (Gemini) | Neutral 8th and 9th |
| Kark (Cancer) | Maraka 7th and 8th |
| Singh (Leo) | Malefic · Maraka 6th and 7th |
| Kanya (Virgo) | Neutral 5th and 6th |
| Tula (Libra) | Yogakaraka 4th and 5th |
| Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Malefic 3rd and 4th |
| Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Maraka 2nd and 3rd |
| Makar (Capricorn) | Neutral— the lagna lord; not a killer on his own, the verse says (34.39) 1st and 2nd |
| Kumbh (Aquarius) | Benefic— the lagna lord, and one the verse itself names auspicious for Kumbh (34.41) 1st and 12th |
| Meen (Pisces) | Malefic · Maraka— lord of the 11th and 12th, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.43–44) 11th and 12th |
Ketu rules no house, so no lagna makes it good or bad by lordship: it gives the results of the house it sits in and of the lord of that rashi. Ketu in each house shows how.
One kundli that meets Ketu–Shani at 72, read the way the report reads yours
From the Janam Kundli report
Ketu sits in your 12th house: this period brings its matters forward — spending, sleep, foreign places, and what is given away. A node gives the results of the lord of its sign: here Mangal, which rules your 5th house and 12th house and sits in your 11th house. Mixed — its sign's lord well placed; on the other side: a difficult house.
In this kundli it runs 15 July 2056 – 24 August 2057, from the age of 72 to 73. Its length here can differ from the one above by a day, because each kundli’s dates round to the day.
Shani: rules your 2nd house and 3rd house, sits in your 11th house. It brings the money at hand, the family, and speech; effort, courage, younger siblings and short journeys. Go carefully — at a hard angle from Ketu, short of Shadbala and debilitated in the navamsa; on the other side: a house of wealth or gain and strong in its sign.
Shadbala: the six-fold measure of a graha’s strength the report computes; “short of Shadbala” means below the strength the texts ask of it. Navamsa: the ninth-division chart, read for a graha’s inner strength. Debilitated: in its sign of fall, where a graha is weakest.
Ketu–Shani divides into nine pratyantars from Shani’s own on. Each length is counted between the dates beside it, and comes out the same in any kundli give or take a day; the dates and readings are this one’s.
| Pratyantar | Length | In this kundli | The report reads |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shani | 2 months 2 days | 15 July 2056 – 17 September 2056 | Mixed |
| Budh | 1 month 27 days | 17 September 2056 – 13 November 2056 | Mixed |
| Ketu | 24 days | 13 November 2056 – 7 December 2056 | Mixed |
| Shukra | 2 months 6 days | 7 December 2056 – 13 February 2057 | Mixed |
| Surya | 20 days | 13 February 2057 – 5 March 2057 | Mixed |
| Chandra | 1 month 2 days | 5 March 2057 – 7 April 2057 | Mixed |
| Mangal | 24 days | 7 April 2057 – 1 May 2057 | Opens |
| Rahu | 2 months | 1 May 2057 – 1 July 2057 | Care |
| Guru | 1 month 23 days | 1 July 2057 – 24 August 2057 | Mixed |

Suggestions for Shani’s months, which your kundli confirms
Parashara gives Ketu–Shani a remedy of its own (BPHS 59.68), set out above under “Parashara’s remedy”; it comes first.
ॐ प्रां प्रीं प्रौं सः शनैश्चराय नमः
Daan: black sesame and iron, on Saturday
What helps and what to keep clear of in any Shani period: Shani mahadasha. Its vrat, ratna, stotra and puja: Shani upay.
1 year 1 month 9 days (405 days): Ketu’s 7 years × Shani’s 19 years ÷ 120. It begins 4 years 10 months 24 days after a Ketu mahadasha starts.
Not in advance: it turns on your lagna and on where Ketu and Shani sit in your kundli. Ketu has no lagna of its own to be good or bad for; it gives the results of the lord of the rashi it sits in. Shani is favourable for Vrishabh (Taurus), Tula (Libra), Kumbh (Aquarius) lagna. Shani is hard for Mesh (Aries), Kark (Cancer), Singh (Leo), Vrishchik (Scorpio), Dhanu (Sagittarius), Meen (Pisces) lagna. By nature the two are neither friends nor enemies. On the Dhanu lagna kundli above, the Janam Kundli report reads it as “Care”, as its chip above says.
Nine, in the order Shani, Budh, Ketu, Shukra, Surya, Chandra, Mangal, Rahu, Guru. Each is Ketu–Shani’s length × the pratyantar lord’s years ÷ 120, so the longest is Shukra’s, about 2 months 6 days, and the shortest Surya’s, about 20 days.
Parashara gives this antardasha a remedy of its own (BPHS 59.68), set out above under “Parashara’s remedy”. The Shani beej mantra, Om Praam Preem Praum Sah Shanaishcharaya Namah, and a daan of black sesame and iron on Saturday are the everyday upay for Ketu–Shani, where your kundli shows the need.
