How the two grahas get on

Ketu and Surya are neither friends nor enemies to each other (neutral). That natural relationship is where reading a Ketu–Surya period starts; where Ketu and Surya sit in your kundli decides what it brings. Texts differ on the friendships of Rahu and Ketu; this is the table the kundli here uses.

What Parashara says

Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 59, verses 16–24

Parashara reads Surya’s antardasha in Ketu’s mahadasha by where Surya sits, counted from the lagna and from Ketu, and by what it rules; your kundli shows which line is yours, and though the text speaks of a man, its results apply to anyone.

When it goes well

  • When Surya (Sun) is in his exaltation or own sign, or is joined or aspected by a benefic graha in a kendra (the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house), a trikona (the 1st, 5th or 9th house) or the 11th house, BPHS gives gains of wealth, the favour of those in power, pious deeds and the fulfilment of all ambitions.BPHS 59.16–17
  • When Surya (Sun) is in a kendra (the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th), a trikona (the 1st, 5th or 9th), or the 2nd or 11th, counted from Ketu, the mahadasha lord, BPHS gives good health, gains of wealth or the birth of a son, success in pious deeds, and a modest post of charge, such as the head of a small community.BPHS 59.20–21

When it is hard

  • When Surya (Sun) is joined by one or more malefic grahas in the 8th or 12th house, BPHS warns of trouble from those in power, separation from parents, journeys to foreign lands, trouble from thieves, danger from snakes and poison, penalties from government, friction with friends, sorrow and danger from fever.BPHS 59.18–19½
  • When Surya (Sun) is joined by malefic grahas in the 8th or 12th, counted from Ketu, the mahadasha lord, BPHS warns of difficulty in getting food, fears, and loss of wealth and livestock. The start of the antardasha is hard, easing somewhat at its end.BPHS 59.22–23

Parashara’s remedy

For relief, and to regain comfort through Surya's grace, BPHS prescribes giving a cow and gold in charity.

BPHS 59.24

A caution: When Surya rules your 2nd or 7th house, BPHS counts this a maraka period (one the texts link with danger to life). It warns of the danger of an untimely death and asks for care with health. BPHS 59.23–24

Ketu–Surya for your lagna

What Surya is for each lagna, as Parashara lists it; Ketu follows the lord of its rashi

The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:

  • Yogakaraka: the strongest graha a lagna can have: the one Parashara names as bringing yoga, or the one lord of both a kendra (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) and a trikona (1st, 5th, 9th) (34.13)
  • Benefic, Malefic, Neutral: works for the lagna; brings its harder matters; neither
  • Lagna lord: the lagna’s own graha, where the verse calls it neither good nor hard
  • Maraka: a killer Parashara names for the lagna, watched for health and longevity; printed alone, or after another label. It is not always the lord of the 2nd or 7th: where it differs, the line under it gives the verse
  • · Yoga: one of two grahas he says give yoga together for this lagna

Ketu rules no house, so no lagna makes it good or bad by lordship: it gives the results of the house it sits in and of the lord of that rashi. Ketu in each house shows how.

From the Janam Kundli report

Ketu mahadasha Mixed

Ketu sits in your 12th house: this period brings its matters forward — spending, sleep, foreign places, and what is given away. A node gives the results of the lord of its sign: here Mangal, which rules your 5th house and 12th house and sits in your 11th house. Mixed — its sign's lord well placed; on the other side: a difficult house.

Surya antardasha Mixed

In this kundli it runs 19 March 2053 – 24 July 2053, at the age of 69. Its length here can differ from the one above by a day, because each kundli’s dates round to the day.

Surya: rules your 9th house, sits in your 2nd house. It brings fortune, the father, teachers, and long travel. Mixed — a house of wealth or gain, lord of a trikona, well placed from Ketu and strong in the navamsa; on the other side: short of Shadbala and in an enemy's sign.

Shadbala: the six-fold measure of a graha’s strength the report computes; “short of Shadbala” means below the strength the texts ask of it. Navamsa: the ninth-division chart, read for a graha’s inner strength.

Its nine pratyantars

Ketu–Surya divides into nine pratyantars from Surya’s own on. Each length is counted between the dates beside it, and comes out the same in any kundli give or take a day; the dates and readings are this one’s.

Common questions

How long is Ketu mahadasha Surya antardasha?

4 months 6 days (128 days): Ketu’s 7 years × Surya’s 6 years ÷ 120. It begins 1 year 6 months 27 days after a Ketu mahadasha starts.

Is Ketu mahadasha Surya antardasha good or bad?

Not in advance: it turns on your lagna and on where Ketu and Surya sit in your kundli. Ketu has no lagna of its own to be good or bad for; it gives the results of the lord of the rashi it sits in. Surya is favourable for Mesh (Aries), Vrishabh (Taurus), Singh (Leo), Vrishchik (Scorpio), Dhanu (Sagittarius) lagna. Surya is hard for Mithun (Gemini), Kark (Cancer), Tula (Libra), Kumbh (Aquarius), Meen (Pisces) lagna. By nature the two are neither friends nor enemies. On the Dhanu lagna kundli above, the Janam Kundli report reads it as “Mixed”, as its chip above says.

What are the pratyantars of Ketu mahadasha Surya antardasha?

Nine, in the order Surya, Chandra, Mangal, Rahu, Guru, Shani, Budh, Ketu, Shukra. Each is Ketu–Surya’s length × the pratyantar lord’s years ÷ 120, so the longest is Shukra’s, about 21 days, and the shortest Surya’s, about 6 days.

What upay helps in Surya antardasha?

Parashara gives this antardasha a remedy of its own (BPHS 59.24), set out above under “Parashara’s remedy”. The Surya beej mantra, Om Hraam Hreem Hraum Sah Suryaya Namah, and a daan of wheat and jaggery on Sunday are the everyday upay for Ketu–Surya, where your kundli shows the need.
