Budh mahadasha is about
trade, study and the written word
Budh · Surya
Surya antardasha in Budh mahadasha runs 10 months 6 days. It is the fourth of the nine and begins 6 years 2 months 24 days after the mahadasha starts.
Budh’s 17 years × Surya’s 6 years ÷ 120
10 months 6 days · 310 days
Shukra antardasha comes before it, and Chandra antardasha after it.
Budh counts Surya a friend, and Surya counts Budh neither friend nor enemy (neutral). That natural relationship is where reading a Budh–Surya period starts; where Budh and Surya sit in your kundli decides what it brings.

Budh–Surya area by area, in plain words, from Parashara’s verses set out below
| Area | What the verses give |
|---|---|
| Work and standing | When it goes well: your fortune rises through the favour of those in power or your seniors. |
| Money and property | When it goes well: you gain land, and good food and clothes. |
| Family | When it goes well: friends bring you happiness; when it is hard: you are separated from friends. |
| Health | When it is hard: thieves, fire or weapons threaten you, and you suffer bilious complaints, headaches, and mental anguish. |
For faith and journeys, Parashara’s verses on Budh–Surya give nothing of their own; there the two grahas’ places in your kundli decide.
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 58, verses 20–25
Parashara reads Surya’s antardasha in Budh’s mahadasha by where Surya sits, counted from the lagna and from Budh, and by what it rules; your kundli shows which line is yours, and though the text speaks of a man, its results apply to anyone.
For relief from these difficulties, BPHS prescribes the worship of Surya.
BPHS 58.25A caution: When Surya rules your 2nd or 7th house, BPHS counts this a maraka period (one the texts link with danger to life). It warns of the danger of an untimely death and asks for care with health. BPHS 58.25
What Budh and Surya are for each lagna, as Parashara lists them, and the two read together
For Dhanu (Sagittarius) lagna, Parashara names Budh and Surya together as givers of yoga (34.38): the strongest this pair can be. Both are hard for Kark (Cancer), Meen (Pisces) lagna, where the period asks for the most care. For Mesh (Aries), Singh (Leo), Tula (Libra), Vrishchik (Scorpio) lagna one is good and the other hard, so the period is mixed. Where one of the two is neutral, the other decides the lean: towards good for Vrishabh (Taurus), Kanya (Virgo), Makar (Capricorn) and towards hard for Mithun (Gemini), Kumbh (Aquarius).
The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:
| Lagna | Budh is (lord of) | Surya is (lord of) | Together |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mesh (Aries) | Malefic 3rd and 6th | Benefic 5th | Mixed |
| Vrishabh (Taurus) | Mildly malefic— lord of the 2nd and 5th, which the verse calls 'somewhat inauspicious' (34.23) and does not name among the killers 2nd and 5th | Benefic 4th | Leans favourable |
| Mithun (Gemini) | Lagna lord— the lagna lord, which the verse leaves unjudged: 34.25 names only Shukra auspicious for Mithun 1st and 4th | Malefic 3rd | Leans hard |
| Kark (Cancer) | Malefic 3rd and 12th | Maraka 2nd | Hard |
| Singh (Leo) | Malefic— lord of the 2nd, but the killers the verse names for this lagna are Shani and Chandra (34.29–30) 2nd and 11th | Benefic 1st | Mixed |
| Kanya (Virgo) | Benefic · Yoga— gives yoga together with Shukra (34.32) 1st and 10th | Neutral— gives results by association (34.32) 12th | Leans favourable |
| Tula (Libra) | Benefic · Yoga— gives yoga together with Chandra (34.34) 9th and 12th | Malefic 11th | Mixed |
| Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Malefic 8th and 11th | Yogakaraka— as the verse names it, together with Chandra, the 9th lord (34.35–36) 10th | Mixed |
| Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Benefic · Yoga— gives yoga together with Surya (34.38)— lord of the 7th, but the killers the verse names for this lagna are Shani and Shukra (34.37–38) 7th and 10th | Benefic · Yoga— gives yoga together with Budh (34.38) 9th | Yoga pair |
| Makar (Capricorn) | Benefic 6th and 9th | Neutral 8th | Leans favourable |
| Kumbh (Aquarius) | Neutral— gives mixed results (34.42) 5th and 8th | Maraka 7th | Leans hard |
| Meen (Pisces) | Malefic · Maraka 4th and 7th | Malefic 6th | Hard |
“Together” reads Budh and Surya side by side: both favourable is Favourable; one favourable and one neutral, Leans favourable; one each way, Mixed; one hard and one neutral, Leans hard; both hard, Hard; both neutral, Placement decides. A Yoga pair is two grahas Parashara names together for that lagna. “Lagna lord” and “Mildly malefic” are the verse’s own words, neither favourable nor hard, and count as neutral here.
One kundli that meets Budh–Surya at 56, read the way the report reads yours
From the Janam Kundli report
Budh rules your 7th house and 10th house and sits in your 1st house: this period brings those matters forward — the spouse, partners, and those one deals with; work, standing, and those senior to you. Mixed — a kendra or trikona; on the other side: short of Shadbala.
In this kundli it runs 14 November 2040 – 20 September 2041, from the age of 56 to 57. Its length here can differ from the one above by a day, because each kundli’s dates round to the day.
Surya: rules your 9th house, sits in your 2nd house. It brings fortune, the father, teachers, and long travel. Mixed — a house of wealth or gain, lord of a trikona and strong in the navamsa; on the other side: short of Shadbala and in an enemy's sign.
Shadbala: the six-fold measure of a graha’s strength the report computes; “short of Shadbala” means below the strength the texts ask of it. Navamsa: the ninth-division chart, read for a graha’s inner strength.
Budh–Surya divides into nine pratyantars from Surya’s own on. Each length is counted between the dates beside it, and comes out the same in any kundli give or take a day; the dates and readings are this one’s.
| Pratyantar | Length | In this kundli | The report reads |
|---|---|---|---|
| Surya | 15 days | 14 November 2040 – 29 November 2040 | Mixed |
| Chandra | 26 days | 29 November 2040 – 25 December 2040 | Mixed |
| Mangal | 18 days | 25 December 2040 – 12 January 2041 | Opens |
| Rahu | 1 month 16 days | 12 January 2041 – 28 February 2041 | Mixed |
| Guru | 1 month 13 days | 28 February 2041 – 10 April 2041 | Mixed |
| Shani | 1 month 19 days | 10 April 2041 – 29 May 2041 | Mixed |
| Budh | 1 month 13 days | 29 May 2041 – 12 July 2041 | Care |
| Ketu | 18 days | 12 July 2041 – 30 July 2041 | Mixed |
| Shukra | 1 month 21 days | 30 July 2041 – 20 September 2041 | Mixed |

Suggestions for Surya’s months, which your kundli confirms
Parashara gives Budh–Surya a remedy of its own (BPHS 58.25), set out above under “Parashara’s remedy”; it comes first.
ॐ ह्रां ह्रीं ह्रौं सः सूर्याय नमः
Daan: wheat and jaggery, on Sunday
What helps and what to keep clear of in any Surya period: Surya mahadasha. Its vrat, ratna, stotra and puja: Surya upay.
10 months 6 days (310 days): Budh’s 17 years × Surya’s 6 years ÷ 120. It begins 6 years 2 months 24 days after a Budh mahadasha starts.
Not in advance: it turns on your lagna and on where Budh and Surya sit in your kundli. By Parashara’s lists it is strongest for Dhanu (Sagittarius) lagna. It is hardest for Kark (Cancer), Meen (Pisces) lagna. By nature the friendship is uneven: Budh sees Surya as a friend, and Surya sees Budh as neutral. On the Dhanu lagna kundli above, the Janam Kundli report reads it as “Mixed”, as its chip above says.
Nine, in the order Surya, Chandra, Mangal, Rahu, Guru, Shani, Budh, Ketu, Shukra. Each is Budh–Surya’s length × the pratyantar lord’s years ÷ 120, so the longest is Shukra’s, about 1 month 21 days, and the shortest Surya’s, about 15 days.
Parashara gives this antardasha a remedy of its own (BPHS 58.25), set out above under “Parashara’s remedy”. The Surya beej mantra, Om Hraam Hreem Hraum Sah Suryaya Namah, and a daan of wheat and jaggery on Sunday are the everyday upay for Budh–Surya, where your kundli shows the need.
It follows from the Moon’s nakshatra at your birth. Enter your birth details and the whole 120-year timeline comes with it, each period read for your chart.
