Budh mahadasha is about
trade, study and the written word
Budh · Shukra
Shukra antardasha in Budh mahadasha runs 2 years 10 months. It is the third of the nine and begins 3 years 4 months 24 days after the mahadasha starts.
Budh’s 17 years × Shukra’s 20 years ÷ 120
2 years 10 months · 1,035 days
Ketu antardasha comes before it, and Surya antardasha after it.
Budh and Shukra are friends to each other. That natural relationship is where reading a Budh–Shukra period starts; where Budh and Shukra sit in your kundli decides what it brings.

Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 58, verses 13–19
Parashara reads Shukra’s antardasha in Budh’s mahadasha by where Shukra sits, counted from the lagna and from Budh, and by what it rules; your kundli shows which line is yours, and though the text speaks of a man, its results apply to anyone.
For relief from these difficulties, BPHS prescribes reciting the mantras of Goddess Durga.
BPHS 58.18–19A caution: When Shukra rules your 2nd or 7th house, BPHS counts this a maraka period (one the texts link with danger to life). It warns of the danger of an untimely death and asks for care with health. BPHS 58.18–19
What Budh and Shukra are for each lagna, as Parashara lists them, and the two read together
For Kanya (Virgo) lagna, Parashara names Budh and Shukra together as givers of yoga (34.32): the strongest this pair can be. Both are favourable for Makar (Capricorn) lagna. Both are hard for Mesh (Aries), Kark (Cancer), Singh (Leo), Vrishchik (Scorpio), Meen (Pisces) lagna, where the period asks for the most care. For Dhanu (Sagittarius) lagna one is good and the other hard, so the period is mixed. Where one of the two is neutral, the other decides the lean: towards good for Mithun (Gemini), Tula (Libra), Kumbh (Aquarius) and towards hard for Vrishabh (Taurus).
The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:
| Lagna | Budh is (lord of) | Shukra is (lord of) | Together |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mesh (Aries) | Malefic 3rd and 6th | Malefic · Maraka 2nd and 7th | Hard |
| Vrishabh (Taurus) | Mildly malefic— lord of the 2nd and 5th, which the verse calls 'somewhat inauspicious' (34.23) and does not name among the killers 2nd and 5th | Malefic · Maraka— the lagna lord, but also lord of the 6th: a malefic and a killer (34.23–24) 1st and 6th | Leans hard |
| Mithun (Gemini) | Lagna lord— the lagna lord, which the verse leaves unjudged: 34.25 names only Shukra auspicious for Mithun 1st and 4th | Benefic 5th and 12th | Leans favourable |
| Kark (Cancer) | Malefic 3rd and 12th | Malefic 4th and 11th | Hard |
| Singh (Leo) | Malefic— lord of the 2nd, but the killers the verse names for this lagna are Shani and Chandra (34.29–30) 2nd and 11th | Malefic 3rd and 10th | Hard |
| Kanya (Virgo) | Benefic · Yoga— gives yoga together with Shukra (34.32) 1st and 10th | Benefic · Maraka · Yoga— gives yoga together with Budh (34.32) 2nd and 9th | Yoga pair |
| Tula (Libra) | Benefic · Yoga— gives yoga together with Chandra (34.34) 9th and 12th | Neutral— the lagna lord, which the verse calls neutral (34.34) 1st and 8th | Leans favourable |
| Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Malefic 8th and 11th | Malefic · Maraka 7th and 12th | Hard |
| Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Benefic · Yoga— gives yoga together with Surya (34.38)— lord of the 7th, but the killers the verse names for this lagna are Shani and Shukra (34.37–38) 7th and 10th | Malefic · Maraka— lord of the 6th and 11th, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.37–38) 6th and 11th | Mixed |
| Makar (Capricorn) | Benefic 6th and 9th | Yogakaraka 5th and 10th | Favourable |
| Kumbh (Aquarius) | Neutral— gives mixed results (34.42) 5th and 8th | Yogakaraka 4th and 9th | Leans favourable |
| Meen (Pisces) | Malefic · Maraka 4th and 7th | Malefic 3rd and 8th | Hard |
“Together” reads Budh and Shukra side by side: both favourable is Favourable; one favourable and one neutral, Leans favourable; one each way, Mixed; one hard and one neutral, Leans hard; both hard, Hard; both neutral, Placement decides. A Yoga pair is two grahas Parashara names together for that lagna. “Lagna lord” and “Mildly malefic” are the verse’s own words, neither favourable nor hard, and count as neutral here.
One kundli that meets Budh–Shukra at 53, read the way the report reads yours
From the Janam Kundli report
Budh rules your 7th house and 10th house and sits in your 1st house: this period brings those matters forward — the spouse, partners, and those one deals with; work, standing, and those senior to you. Mixed — a kendra or trikona; on the other side: short of Shadbala.
In this kundli it runs 14 January 2038 – 14 November 2040, from the age of 53 to 56. Its length here can differ from the one above by a day, because each kundli’s dates round to the day.
Shukra: rules your 6th house and 11th house, sits in your 1st house. It brings illness, debt, disputes, and thankless work; income, gains, elder siblings, and friends who help. Mixed — a kendra or trikona and strong in the navamsa; on the other side: short of Shadbala.
Shadbala: the six-fold measure of a graha’s strength the report computes; “short of Shadbala” means below the strength the texts ask of it. Navamsa: the ninth-division chart, read for a graha’s inner strength.
Budh–Shukra divides into nine pratyantars from Shukra’s own on. Each length is counted between the dates beside it, and comes out the same in any kundli give or take a day; the dates and readings are this one’s.
| Pratyantar | Length | In this kundli | The report reads |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shukra | 5 months 21 days | 14 January 2038 – 5 July 2038 | Mixed |
| Surya | 1 month 21 days | 5 July 2038 – 26 August 2038 | Mixed |
| Chandra | 2 months 25 days | 26 August 2038 – 20 November 2038 | Mixed |
| Mangal | 2 months | 20 November 2038 – 20 January 2039 | Opens |
| Rahu | 5 months 4 days | 20 January 2039 – 24 June 2039 | Care |
| Guru | 4 months 16 days | 24 June 2039 – 9 November 2039 | Mixed |
| Shani | 5 months 12 days | 9 November 2039 – 21 April 2040 | Mixed |
| Budh | 4 months 24 days | 21 April 2040 – 14 September 2040 | Mixed |
| Ketu | 2 months | 14 September 2040 – 14 November 2040 | Care |

Suggestions for Shukra’s months, which your kundli confirms
Parashara gives Budh–Shukra a remedy of its own (BPHS 58.18–19), set out above under “Parashara’s remedy”; it comes first.
ॐ द्रां द्रीं द्रौं सः शुक्राय नमः
Daan: white cloth and rice, on Friday
What helps and what to keep clear of in any Shukra period: Shukra mahadasha. Its vrat, ratna, stotra and puja: Shukra upay.
2 years 10 months (1,035 days): Budh’s 17 years × Shukra’s 20 years ÷ 120. It begins 3 years 4 months 24 days after a Budh mahadasha starts.
Not in advance: it turns on your lagna and on where Budh and Shukra sit in your kundli. By Parashara’s lists it is strongest for Kanya (Virgo), Makar (Capricorn) lagna. It is hardest for Mesh (Aries), Kark (Cancer), Singh (Leo), Vrishchik (Scorpio), Meen (Pisces) lagna. By nature the two are friends. On the Dhanu lagna kundli above, the Janam Kundli report reads it as “Mixed”, as its chip above says.
Nine, in the order Shukra, Surya, Chandra, Mangal, Rahu, Guru, Shani, Budh, Ketu. Each is Budh–Shukra’s length × the pratyantar lord’s years ÷ 120, so the longest is Shukra’s, about 5 months 21 days, and the shortest Surya’s, about 1 month 21 days.
Parashara gives this antardasha a remedy of its own (BPHS 58.18–19), set out above under “Parashara’s remedy”. The Shukra beej mantra, Om Draam Dreem Draum Sah Shukraya Namah, and a daan of white cloth and rice on Friday are the everyday upay for Budh–Shukra, where your kundli shows the need.
