Budh mahadasha is about
trade, study and the written word
Budh · Shani
Shani antardasha in Budh mahadasha runs 2 years 8 months 9 days. It is the ninth of the nine and begins 14 years 3 months 21 days after the mahadasha starts.
Budh’s 17 years × Shani’s 19 years ÷ 120
2 years 8 months 9 days · 983 days
Guru antardasha comes before it, and it closes the mahadasha; Ketu mahadasha begins when it ends. The last months of a mahadasha, where one period hands over to the next, are called dasha sandhi (the junction), and the tradition reads them with care.
Budh counts Shani neither friend nor enemy (neutral), and Shani counts Budh a friend. That natural relationship is where reading a Budh–Shani period starts; where Budh and Shani sit in your kundli decides what it brings.

Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 58, verses 67–72
Parashara reads Shani’s antardasha in Budh’s mahadasha by where Shani sits, counted from the lagna and from Budh, and by what it rules; your kundli shows which line is yours, and though the text speaks of a man, its results apply to anyone.
For relief and to regain good health, BPHS prescribes the Mahamrityunjaya japa, the mantra to Shiva for health and long life, and giving a black cow and a female buffalo in charity.
BPHS 58.72A caution: When Shani rules your 2nd or 7th house, BPHS counts this a maraka period (one the texts link with danger to life). It warns of the danger of an untimely death and asks for care with health. BPHS 58.71
What Budh and Shani are for each lagna, as Parashara lists them, and the two read together
Both are favourable for Tula (Libra) lagna. Both are hard for Mesh (Aries), Kark (Cancer), Singh (Leo), Vrishchik (Scorpio), Meen (Pisces) lagna, where the period asks for the most care. For Dhanu (Sagittarius) lagna one is good and the other hard, so the period is mixed. Where one of the two is neutral, the other decides the lean: towards good for Vrishabh (Taurus), Kanya (Virgo), Makar (Capricorn), Kumbh (Aquarius). For Mithun (Gemini) lagna both are neutral, and where Budh and Shani sit decides it.
The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:
| Lagna | Budh is (lord of) | Shani is (lord of) | Together |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mesh (Aries) | Malefic 3rd and 6th | Malefic 10th and 11th | Hard |
| Vrishabh (Taurus) | Mildly malefic— lord of the 2nd and 5th, which the verse calls 'somewhat inauspicious' (34.23) and does not name among the killers 2nd and 5th | Yogakaraka 9th and 10th | Leans favourable |
| Mithun (Gemini) | Lagna lord— the lagna lord, which the verse leaves unjudged: 34.25 names only Shukra auspicious for Mithun 1st and 4th | Neutral 8th and 9th | Placement decides |
| Kark (Cancer) | Malefic 3rd and 12th | Maraka 7th and 8th | Hard |
| Singh (Leo) | Malefic— lord of the 2nd, but the killers the verse names for this lagna are Shani and Chandra (34.29–30) 2nd and 11th | Malefic · Maraka 6th and 7th | Hard |
| Kanya (Virgo) | Benefic · Yoga— gives yoga together with Shukra (34.32) 1st and 10th | Neutral 5th and 6th | Leans favourable |
| Tula (Libra) | Benefic · Yoga— gives yoga together with Chandra (34.34) 9th and 12th | Yogakaraka 4th and 5th | Favourable |
| Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Malefic 8th and 11th | Malefic 3rd and 4th | Hard |
| Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Benefic · Yoga— gives yoga together with Surya (34.38)— lord of the 7th, but the killers the verse names for this lagna are Shani and Shukra (34.37–38) 7th and 10th | Maraka 2nd and 3rd | Mixed |
| Makar (Capricorn) | Benefic 6th and 9th | Neutral— the lagna lord; not a killer on his own, the verse says (34.39) 1st and 2nd | Leans favourable |
| Kumbh (Aquarius) | Neutral— gives mixed results (34.42) 5th and 8th | Benefic— the lagna lord, and one the verse itself names auspicious for Kumbh (34.41) 1st and 12th | Leans favourable |
| Meen (Pisces) | Malefic · Maraka 4th and 7th | Malefic · Maraka— lord of the 11th and 12th, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.43–44) 11th and 12th | Hard |
“Together” reads Budh and Shani side by side: both favourable is Favourable; one favourable and one neutral, Leans favourable; one each way, Mixed; one hard and one neutral, Leans hard; both hard, Hard; both neutral, Placement decides. A Yoga pair is two grahas Parashara names together for that lagna. “Lagna lord” and “Mildly malefic” are the verse’s own words, neither favourable nor hard, and count as neutral here.
One kundli that meets Budh–Shani at 64, read the way the report reads yours
From the Janam Kundli report
Budh rules your 7th house and 10th house and sits in your 1st house: this period brings those matters forward — the spouse, partners, and those one deals with; work, standing, and those senior to you. Mixed — a kendra or trikona; on the other side: short of Shadbala.
In this kundli it runs 11 December 2048 – 21 August 2051, from the age of 64 to 67. Its length here can differ from the one above by a day, because each kundli’s dates round to the day.
Shani: rules your 2nd house and 3rd house, sits in your 11th house. It brings the money at hand, the family, and speech; effort, courage, younger siblings and short journeys. Mixed — a house of wealth or gain, strong in its sign and well placed from Budh; on the other side: short of Shadbala and debilitated in the navamsa.
Shadbala: the six-fold measure of a graha’s strength the report computes; “short of Shadbala” means below the strength the texts ask of it. Navamsa: the ninth-division chart, read for a graha’s inner strength. Debilitated: in its sign of fall, where a graha is weakest.
Budh–Shani divides into nine pratyantars from Shani’s own on. Each length is counted between the dates beside it, and comes out the same in any kundli give or take a day; the dates and readings are this one’s.
| Pratyantar | Length | In this kundli | The report reads |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shani | 5 months 5 days | 11 December 2048 – 16 May 2049 | Mixed |
| Budh | 4 months 16 days | 16 May 2049 – 2 October 2049 | Mixed |
| Ketu | 1 month 26 days | 2 October 2049 – 28 November 2049 | Mixed |
| Shukra | 5 months 13 days | 28 November 2049 – 11 May 2050 | Mixed |
| Surya | 1 month 18 days | 11 May 2050 – 29 June 2050 | Mixed |
| Chandra | 2 months 21 days | 29 June 2050 – 19 September 2050 | Mixed |
| Mangal | 1 month 28 days | 19 September 2050 – 16 November 2050 | Opens |
| Rahu | 4 months 27 days | 16 November 2050 – 12 April 2051 | Care |
| Guru | 4 months 9 days | 12 April 2051 – 21 August 2051 | Mixed |

Suggestions for Shani’s months, which your kundli confirms
Parashara gives Budh–Shani a remedy of its own (BPHS 58.72), set out above under “Parashara’s remedy”; it comes first.

Daan: black sesame and iron, on Saturday
What helps and what to keep clear of in any Shani period: Shani mahadasha. Its vrat, ratna, stotra and puja: Shani upay.
2 years 8 months 9 days (983 days): Budh’s 17 years × Shani’s 19 years ÷ 120. It begins 14 years 3 months 21 days after a Budh mahadasha starts.
Not in advance: it turns on your lagna and on where Budh and Shani sit in your kundli. By Parashara’s lists it is strongest for Tula (Libra) lagna. It is hardest for Mesh (Aries), Kark (Cancer), Singh (Leo), Vrishchik (Scorpio), Meen (Pisces) lagna. By nature the friendship is uneven: Budh sees Shani as neutral, and Shani sees Budh as a friend. On the Dhanu lagna kundli above, the Janam Kundli report reads it as “Mixed”, as its chip above says.
Nine, in the order Shani, Budh, Ketu, Shukra, Surya, Chandra, Mangal, Rahu, Guru. Each is Budh–Shani’s length × the pratyantar lord’s years ÷ 120, so the longest is Shukra’s, about 5 months 13 days, and the shortest Surya’s, about 1 month 18 days.
Parashara gives this antardasha a remedy of its own (BPHS 58.72), set out above under “Parashara’s remedy”. The Shani beej mantra, Om Praam Preem Praum Sah Shanaishcharaya Namah, and a daan of black sesame and iron on Saturday are the everyday upay for Budh–Shani, where your kundli shows the need.
