How the two grahas get on

Chandra counts Shani neither friend nor enemy (neutral), and Shani counts Chandra an enemy. That natural relationship is where reading a Chandra–Shani period starts; where Chandra and Shani sit in your kundli decides what it brings.

Chandra mahadasha is about

the mind, the mother and the home

What it touches in life

Chandra–Shani area by area, in plain words, from Parashara’s verses set out below

AreaWhat the verses give
Work and standingWhen it goes well: you profit in business with the help of working people, and gain riches and standing through the kindness of those in power.
Money and propertyWhen it goes well: you gain wealth, property and better harvests, with wealth and enjoyment at other times.
FamilyWhen it goes well: a son is born, friendships grow and a son brings gains; when it is hard: you quarrel with your spouse and children.
Faith and journeysWhen it is hard: you also visit holy places and bathe in sacred rivers.

For health, Parashara’s verses on Chandra–Shani give nothing of their own; there the two grahas’ places in your kundli decide.

What Parashara says

Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 53, verses 32–38

Parashara reads Shani’s antardasha in Chandra’s mahadasha by where Shani sits, counted from the lagna and from Chandra, and by what it rules; your kundli shows which line is yours, and though the text speaks of a man, its results apply to anyone.

When it goes well

  • When Shani is in a kendra (the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house) or a trikona (the 1st, 5th or 9th house) from the lagna (ascendant); or is in his own sign, his own navamsa (his own place in the ninth-division chart) or his sign of exaltation; or receives the drishti (aspect) of, or is joined with, benefic grahas (the gentle planets); or is strong in the 11th house, BPHS gives the birth of a son, friendships, gains of wealth and property, profit in business with the help of working people, better harvests, gains through a son, and riches and standing through the kindness of those in power.BPHS 53.32–34
  • When Shani is in a kendra (the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house) or a trikona (the 1st, 5th or 9th house) from Chandra, the lord of the mahadasha, or is strong, BPHS gives mixed results: enjoyment and gains of wealth at some times, and opposition or quarrels with spouse and children at others.BPHS 53.36–38

When it is hard

  • When Shani is in the 6th, 8th, 12th or 2nd house, or is debilitated (in his sign of weakness), BPHS reads this as a mixed time: it warns of trouble stirred up by many people and of distress from enemies, while the same placement also brings visits to holy places and bathing in sacred rivers.BPHS 53.35–35½

Parashara’s remedy

For relief, BPHS prescribes the Mahamrityunjaya japa and giving a black cow or a she-buffalo in charity.

BPHS 53.36–38

A caution: When Shani sits in your 2nd or 7th house (the maraka houses, which the texts link with danger to life), or in the 8th, BPHS warns of bodily distress and asks for care with health. BPHS 53.36–38

Chandra–Shani for your lagna

What Chandra and Shani are for each lagna, as Parashara lists them, and the two read together

Both are hard for Singh (Leo) lagna, where the period asks for the most care. For Vrishabh (Taurus), Kark (Cancer), Vrishchik (Scorpio), Kumbh (Aquarius), Meen (Pisces) lagna one is good and the other hard, so the period is mixed. Where one of the two is neutral, the other decides the lean: towards good for Tula (Libra) and towards hard for Mesh (Aries), Mithun (Gemini), Kanya (Virgo), Dhanu (Sagittarius), Makar (Capricorn).

The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:

  • Yogakaraka: the strongest graha a lagna can have: the one Parashara names as bringing yoga, or the one lord of both a kendra (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) and a trikona (1st, 5th, 9th) (34.13)
  • Benefic, Malefic, Neutral: works for the lagna; brings its harder matters; neither
  • Lagna lord: the lagna’s own graha, where the verse calls it neither good nor hard
  • Maraka: a killer Parashara names for the lagna, watched for health and longevity; printed alone, or after another label. It is not always the lord of the 2nd or 7th: where it differs, the line under it gives the verse
  • · Yoga: one of two grahas he says give yoga together for this lagna

Chandra mahadasha Care

Chandra rules your 10th house and sits in your 6th house: this period brings those matters forward — work, standing, and those senior to you. Go carefully — a difficult house and short of Shadbala; on the other side: vargottama.

Shani antardasha Opens

In this kundli it runs 14 August 2030 – 14 March 2032, from the age of 40 to 41. Its length here can differ from the one above by a day, because each kundli’s dates round to the day.

Shani: rules your 4th house and 5th house, sits in your 3rd house. It brings the home, the mother, land and vehicles, and rest; children, study, and creative work. Favourable — lord of a trikona, well placed from Chandra and vargottama; on the other side: short of Shadbala.

Shadbala: the six-fold measure of a graha’s strength the report computes; “short of Shadbala” means below the strength the texts ask of it. Vargottama: in the same rashi in the birth chart and in the navamsa, which strengthens a graha.

Its nine pratyantars

Chandra–Shani divides into nine pratyantars from Shani’s own on. Each length is counted between the dates beside it, and comes out the same in any kundli give or take a day; the dates and readings are this one’s.

Common questions

How long is Chandra mahadasha Shani antardasha?

1 year 7 months (578 days): Chandra’s 10 years × Shani’s 19 years ÷ 120. It begins 4 years 3 months after a Chandra mahadasha starts.

Is Chandra mahadasha Shani antardasha good or bad?

Not in advance: it turns on your lagna and on where Chandra and Shani sit in your kundli. By Parashara’s lists no lagna has both lords favourable. It is hardest for Singh (Leo) lagna. By nature the friendship is uneven: Chandra sees Shani as neutral, and Shani sees Chandra as an enemy. On the Tula lagna kundli above, the Janam Kundli report reads it as “Opens”, as its chip above says.

What are the pratyantars of Chandra mahadasha Shani antardasha?

Nine, in the order Shani, Budh, Ketu, Shukra, Surya, Chandra, Mangal, Rahu, Guru. Each is Chandra–Shani’s length × the pratyantar lord’s years ÷ 120, so the longest is Shukra’s, about 3 months 4 days, and the shortest Surya’s, about 29 days.

What upay helps in Shani antardasha?

Parashara gives this antardasha a remedy of its own (BPHS 53.36–38), set out above under “Parashara’s remedy”. The Shani beej mantra, Om Praam Preem Praum Sah Shanaishcharaya Namah, and a daan of black sesame and iron on Saturday are the everyday upay for Chandra–Shani, where your kundli shows the need.
