How the two grahas get on

Chandra counts Rahu neither friend nor enemy (neutral), and Rahu counts Chandra an enemy. That natural relationship is where reading a Chandra–Rahu period starts; where Chandra and Rahu sit in your kundli decides what it brings. Texts differ on the friendships of Rahu and Ketu; this is the table the kundli here uses.

What it touches in life

Chandra–Rahu area by area, in plain words, from Parashara’s verses set out below

AreaWhat the verses give
Work and standingWhen it goes well: every venture succeeds; when it is hard: you lose position and reputation and face danger from those in power.
Money and propertyWhen it goes well: those in power give you vehicles and clothes from the south-west; when it is hard: your livestock suffer.
FamilyWhen it is hard: you lose relatives and friends, and your spouse and children are distressed.
HealthWhen it is hard: thieves, snakes and scorpions threaten you, illness is likely, and you feel mentally anguished.
Faith and journeysWhen it goes well: you go on pilgrimage, visit sacred shrines, and turn towards kindness and charity.

What Parashara says

Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 53, verses 13–21

Parashara reads Rahu’s antardasha in Chandra’s mahadasha by where Rahu sits, counted from the lagna and from Chandra, and by what it rules; your kundli shows which line is yours, and though the text speaks of a man, its results apply to anyone.

When it goes well

  • When Rahu receives the drishti (aspect) of benefic grahas (the gentle planets), or is in the 3rd, 6th, 10th or 11th house, or is joined with a yogakaraka (a graha that rules both a kendra and a trikona), BPHS gives success in all ventures, and gains of vehicles, clothes and the like from those in power, coming from the south-west.BPHS 53.15–16
  • When Rahu is in a kendra (the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house) or a trikona (the 1st, 5th or 9th house), or in the 3rd or 11th, counted from Chandra, the lord of the mahadasha, BPHS gives pilgrimage, visits to sacred shrines, kindness, and a leaning towards charitable deeds.BPHS 53.19–21

When it is hard

  • When Rahu is in a kendra (the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house) or a trikona (the 1st, 5th or 9th house), BPHS gives some good results at first, then warns of danger from those in power, from thieves and from snakes, distress to livestock, loss of relatives and friends, loss of reputation, and mental anguish.BPHS 53.13–14
  • When Rahu is weak and is in the 8th or 12th from Chandra, the lord of the mahadasha, BPHS warns of loss of position, mental anguish, distress to spouse and children, risk of illness, and danger from those in power, from scorpions and from snakes.BPHS 53.17–18

Parashara’s remedy

For relief, BPHS prescribes Rahu japa and giving a goat in charity.

BPHS 53.19–21

A caution: When Rahu sits in your 2nd or 7th house (the maraka houses, which the texts link with danger to life), BPHS warns of bodily trouble and asks for care with health. BPHS 53.19–21

Chandra–Rahu for your lagna

What Chandra is for each lagna, as Parashara lists it; Rahu follows the lord of its rashi

The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:

  • Yogakaraka: the strongest graha a lagna can have: the one Parashara names as bringing yoga, or the one lord of both a kendra (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) and a trikona (1st, 5th, 9th) (34.13)
  • Benefic, Malefic, Neutral: works for the lagna; brings its harder matters; neither
  • Lagna lord: the lagna’s own graha, where the verse calls it neither good nor hard
  • Maraka: a killer Parashara names for the lagna, watched for health and longevity; printed alone, or after another label. It is not always the lord of the 2nd or 7th: where it differs, the line under it gives the verse
  • · Yoga: one of two grahas he says give yoga together for this lagna
LagnaChandra is (lord of)
Mesh (Aries)Neutral
4th
Vrishabh (Taurus)Malefic · Maraka— lord of the 3rd only, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.23–24)
3rd
Mithun (Gemini)Maraka
2nd
Kark (Cancer)Benefic
1st
Singh (Leo)Maraka— lord of the 12th only, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.29–30)
12th
Kanya (Virgo)Malefic
11th
Tula (Libra)Neutral · Yoga— gives yoga together with Budh (34.34)
10th
Vrishchik (Scorpio)Yogakaraka— as the verse names it, together with Surya, the 10th lord (34.35–36)
9th
Dhanu (Sagittarius)Neutral
8th
Makar (Capricorn)Malefic— lord of the 7th, but the killer the verse names for this lagna is Mangal (34.39–40)

Kumbh (Aquarius)Malefic

Meen (Pisces)Benefic

Rahu rules no house, so no lagna makes it good or bad by lordship: it gives the results of the house it sits in and of the lord of that rashi. Rahu in each house shows how.

Chandra mahadasha Care

Chandra rules your 10th house and sits in your 6th house: this period brings those matters forward — work, standing, and those senior to you. Go carefully — a difficult house and short of Shadbala; on the other side: vargottama.

Rahu antardasha Opens

In this kundli it runs 14 October 2027 – 14 April 2029, from the age of 37 to 38. Its length here can differ from the one above by a day, because each kundli’s dates round to the day.

Rahu: sits in your 4th house. It brings the home, the mother, land and vehicles, and rest. Favourable — a kendra or trikona and well placed from Chandra.

Shadbala: the six-fold measure of a graha’s strength the report computes; “short of Shadbala” means below the strength the texts ask of it. Vargottama: in the same rashi in the birth chart and in the navamsa, which strengthens a graha.

Its nine pratyantars

Chandra–Rahu divides into nine pratyantars from Rahu’s own on. Each length is counted between the dates beside it, and comes out the same in any kundli give or take a day; the dates and readings are this one’s.

Common questions

How long is Chandra mahadasha Rahu antardasha?

1 year 6 months (548 days): Chandra’s 10 years × Rahu’s 18 years ÷ 120. It begins 1 year 5 months after a Chandra mahadasha starts.

Is Chandra mahadasha Rahu antardasha good or bad?

Not in advance: it turns on your lagna and on where Chandra and Rahu sit in your kundli. Rahu has no lagna of its own to be good or bad for; it gives the results of the lord of the rashi it sits in. Chandra is favourable for Kark (Cancer), Vrishchik (Scorpio), Meen (Pisces) lagna. Chandra is hard for Vrishabh (Taurus), Mithun (Gemini), Singh (Leo), Kanya (Virgo), Makar (Capricorn), Kumbh (Aquarius) lagna. By nature the friendship is uneven: Chandra sees Rahu as neutral, and Rahu sees Chandra as an enemy. On the Tula lagna kundli above, the Janam Kundli report reads it as “Opens”, as its chip above says.

What are the pratyantars of Chandra mahadasha Rahu antardasha?

Nine, in the order Rahu, Guru, Shani, Budh, Ketu, Shukra, Surya, Chandra, Mangal. Each is Chandra–Rahu’s length × the pratyantar lord’s years ÷ 120, so the longest is Shukra’s, about 3 months, and the shortest Surya’s, about 27 days.

What upay helps in Rahu antardasha?

Parashara gives this antardasha a remedy of its own (BPHS 53.19–21), set out above under “Parashara’s remedy”. The Rahu beej mantra, Om Bhraam Bhreem Bhraum Sah Rahave Namah, and a daan of a coconut and black cloth on Saturday are the everyday upay for Chandra–Rahu, where your kundli shows the need.
