Chandra mahadasha is about
the mind, the mother and the home
Chandra · Surya
Surya antardasha in Chandra mahadasha runs 6 months. It is the ninth of the nine and begins 9 years 6 months after the mahadasha starts.
Chandra’s 10 years × Surya’s 6 years ÷ 120
6 months · 183 days
Shukra antardasha comes before it, and it closes the mahadasha; Mangal mahadasha begins when it ends. The last months of a mahadasha, where one period hands over to the next, are called dasha sandhi (the junction), and the tradition reads them with care.
Chandra and Surya are friends to each other. That natural relationship is where reading a Chandra–Surya period starts; where Chandra and Surya sit in your kundli decides what it brings.

Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 53, verses 65–70
Parashara reads Surya’s antardasha in Chandra’s mahadasha by where Surya sits, counted from the lagna and from Chandra, and by what it rules; your kundli shows which line is yours, and though the text speaks of a man, its results apply to anyone.
For relief, BPHS prescribes the worship of Lord Shiva.
BPHS 53.68–70A caution: When Surya rules your 2nd or 7th house (the maraka houses, which the texts link with danger to life), BPHS warns of fever in this antardasha and asks for care with health. BPHS 53.68–70
What Chandra and Surya are for each lagna, as Parashara lists them, and the two read together
Both are favourable for Vrishchik (Scorpio) lagna. Both are hard for Mithun (Gemini), Kumbh (Aquarius) lagna, where the period asks for the most care. For Vrishabh (Taurus), Kark (Cancer), Singh (Leo), Meen (Pisces) lagna one is good and the other hard, so the period is mixed. Where one of the two is neutral, the other decides the lean: towards good for Mesh (Aries), Dhanu (Sagittarius) and towards hard for Kanya (Virgo), Tula (Libra), Makar (Capricorn).
The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:
| Lagna | Chandra is (lord of) | Surya is (lord of) | Together |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mesh (Aries) | Neutral 4th | Benefic 5th | Leans favourable |
| Vrishabh (Taurus) | Malefic · Maraka— lord of the 3rd only, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.23–24) 3rd | Benefic 4th | Mixed |
| Mithun (Gemini) | Maraka 2nd | Malefic 3rd | Hard |
| Kark (Cancer) | Benefic 1st | Maraka 2nd | Mixed |
| Singh (Leo) | Maraka— lord of the 12th only, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.29–30) 12th | Benefic 1st | Mixed |
| Kanya (Virgo) | Malefic 11th | Neutral— gives results by association (34.32) 12th | Leans hard |
| Tula (Libra) | Neutral · Yoga— gives yoga together with Budh (34.34) 10th | Malefic 11th | Leans hard |
| Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Yogakaraka— as the verse names it, together with Surya, the 10th lord (34.35–36) 9th | Yogakaraka— as the verse names it, together with Chandra, the 9th lord (34.35–36) 10th | Favourable |
| Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Neutral 8th | Benefic · Yoga— gives yoga together with Budh (34.38) 9th | Leans favourable |
| Makar (Capricorn) | Malefic— lord of the 7th, but the killer the verse names for this lagna is Mangal (34.39–40) 7th | Neutral 8th | Leans hard |
| Kumbh (Aquarius) | Malefic 6th | Maraka 7th | Hard |
| Meen (Pisces) | Benefic 5th | Malefic 6th | Mixed |
“Together” reads Chandra and Surya side by side: both favourable is Favourable; one favourable and one neutral, Leans favourable; one each way, Mixed; one hard and one neutral, Leans hard; both hard, Hard; both neutral, Placement decides. A Yoga pair is two grahas Parashara names together for that lagna.
One kundli that meets Chandra–Surya at 45, read the way the report reads yours
From the Janam Kundli report
Chandra rules your 10th house and sits in your 6th house: this period brings those matters forward — work, standing, and those senior to you. Go carefully — a difficult house and short of Shadbala; on the other side: vargottama.
In this kundli it runs 13 November 2035 – 14 May 2036, at the age of 45. Its length here can differ from the one above by a day, because each kundli’s dates round to the day.
Surya: rules your 11th house, sits in your 9th house. It brings income, gains, elder siblings, and friends who help. Favourable — a kendra or trikona, well placed from Chandra, enough Shadbala and vargottama.
Shadbala: the six-fold measure of a graha’s strength the report computes; “short of Shadbala” means below the strength the texts ask of it. Vargottama: in the same rashi in the birth chart and in the navamsa, which strengthens a graha.
Chandra–Surya divides into nine pratyantars from Surya’s own on. Each length is counted between the dates beside it, and comes out the same in any kundli give or take a day; the dates and readings are this one’s.
| Pratyantar | Length | In this kundli | The report reads |
|---|---|---|---|
| Surya | 10 days | 13 November 2035 – 23 November 2035 | Opens |
| Chandra | 15 days | 23 November 2035 – 8 December 2035 | Mixed |
| Mangal | 10 days | 8 December 2035 – 18 December 2035 | Mixed |
| Rahu | 28 days | 18 December 2035 – 15 January 2036 | Mixed |
| Guru | 24 days | 15 January 2036 – 8 February 2036 | Care |
| Shani | 1 month | 8 February 2036 – 8 March 2036 | Opens |
| Budh | 26 days | 8 March 2036 – 3 April 2036 | Care |
| Ketu | 11 days | 3 April 2036 – 14 April 2036 | Mixed |
| Shukra | 1 month | 14 April 2036 – 14 May 2036 | Mixed |

Suggestions for Surya’s months, which your kundli confirms
Parashara gives Chandra–Surya a remedy of its own (BPHS 53.68–70), set out above under “Parashara’s remedy”; it comes first.
ॐ ह्रां ह्रीं ह्रौं सः सूर्याय नमः
Daan: wheat and jaggery, on Sunday
What helps and what to keep clear of in any Surya period: Surya mahadasha. Its vrat, ratna, stotra and puja: Surya upay.
6 months (183 days): Chandra’s 10 years × Surya’s 6 years ÷ 120. It begins 9 years 6 months after a Chandra mahadasha starts.
Not in advance: it turns on your lagna and on where Chandra and Surya sit in your kundli. By Parashara’s lists it is strongest for Vrishchik (Scorpio) lagna. It is hardest for Mithun (Gemini), Kumbh (Aquarius) lagna. By nature the two are friends. On the Tula lagna kundli above, the Janam Kundli report reads it as “Opens”, as its chip above says.
Nine, in the order Surya, Chandra, Mangal, Rahu, Guru, Shani, Budh, Ketu, Shukra. Each is Chandra–Surya’s length × the pratyantar lord’s years ÷ 120, so the longest is Shukra’s, about 1 month, and the shortest Surya’s, about 10 days.
Parashara gives this antardasha a remedy of its own (BPHS 53.68–70), set out above under “Parashara’s remedy”. The Surya beej mantra, Om Hraam Hreem Hraum Sah Suryaya Namah, and a daan of wheat and jaggery on Sunday are the everyday upay for Chandra–Surya, where your kundli shows the need.
It follows from the Moon’s nakshatra at your birth. Enter your birth details and the whole 120-year timeline comes with it, each period read for your chart.
