How the two grahas get on

Chandra counts Guru neither friend nor enemy (neutral), and Guru counts Chandra a friend. That natural relationship is where reading a Chandra–Guru period starts; where Chandra and Guru sit in your kundli decides what it brings.

What Parashara says

Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 53, verses 22–31

Parashara reads Guru’s antardasha in Chandra’s mahadasha by where Guru sits, counted from the lagna and from Chandra, and by what it rules; your kundli shows which line is yours, and though the text speaks of a man, its results apply to anyone.

When it goes well

  • When Guru is in a kendra (the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house) or a trikona (the 1st, 5th or 9th house) from the lagna (ascendant), or is in his own sign or his sign of exaltation, BPHS gives a rise to authority or a position of command, happy celebrations at home, gains of clothes and ornaments, recognition from those in power, the grace of one's Ishta Devata (chosen deity), gains of wealth, land and vehicles, and success in all ventures through the kindness of those in power.BPHS 53.22–24½
  • When Guru is in the 3rd or 11th from Chandra, the lord of the mahadasha, BPHS gives gains of livestock, grain and clothes, happiness from brothers, gains of property, courage and patience, sacred offerings, celebrations such as a marriage, and a rise to authority.BPHS 53.25–28½

When it is hard

  • When Guru is in the 6th, 8th or 12th house (the dusthanas, houses of difficulty), or is combust (too close to the Sun and lost in its rays), debilitated, or joined by malefic grahas (the harsh planets), BPHS warns of harm to one's guru (teacher) and father and to children, of loss of position, mental anguish and quarrels, and of loss of house, vehicles and farmland.BPHS 53.25–28½
  • When Guru is weak and is in the 6th, 8th or 12th from Chandra, the lord of the mahadasha, BPHS speaks of poor food and of journeys far from home.BPHS 53.29–31

Parashara’s remedy

For relief, BPHS prescribes reciting the Shiva Sahasranama and giving gold in charity.

BPHS 53.29–31

A caution: BPHS counts this a maraka period (one the texts link with danger to life) when Guru rules your 2nd or 7th house. It warns of danger of untimely death and asks for care with health. BPHS 53.29–31

Chandra–Guru for your lagna

What Chandra and Guru are for each lagna, as Parashara lists them, and the two read together

Both are favourable for Kark (Cancer), Vrishchik (Scorpio), Meen (Pisces) lagna. Both are hard for Vrishabh (Taurus), Mithun (Gemini), Kanya (Virgo), Makar (Capricorn), Kumbh (Aquarius) lagna, where the period asks for the most care. For Singh (Leo) lagna one is good and the other hard, so the period is mixed. Where one of the two is neutral, the other decides the lean: towards good for Mesh (Aries) and towards hard for Tula (Libra). For Dhanu (Sagittarius) lagna both are neutral, and where Chandra and Guru sit decides it.

The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:

  • Yogakaraka: the strongest graha a lagna can have: the one Parashara names as bringing yoga, or the one lord of both a kendra (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) and a trikona (1st, 5th, 9th) (34.13)
  • Benefic, Malefic, Neutral: works for the lagna; brings its harder matters; neither
  • Lagna lord: the lagna’s own graha, where the verse calls it neither good nor hard
  • Maraka: a killer Parashara names for the lagna, watched for health and longevity; printed alone, or after another label. It is not always the lord of the 2nd or 7th: where it differs, the line under it gives the verse
  • · Yoga: one of two grahas he says give yoga together for this lagna

Chandra mahadasha Care

Chandra rules your 10th house and sits in your 6th house: this period brings those matters forward — work, standing, and those senior to you. Go carefully — a difficult house and short of Shadbala; on the other side: vargottama.

Guru antardasha Mixed

In this kundli it runs 14 April 2029 – 14 August 2030, from the age of 38 to 40. Its length here can differ from the one above by a day, because each kundli’s dates round to the day.

Guru: rules your 3rd house and 6th house, sits in your 9th house. It brings effort, courage, younger siblings and short journeys; illness, debt, disputes, and thankless work. Mixed — a kendra or trikona, well placed from Chandra and vargottama; on the other side: short of Shadbala, in an enemy's sign in the navamsa, in an enemy's sign and combust.

Shadbala: the six-fold measure of a graha’s strength the report computes; “short of Shadbala” means below the strength the texts ask of it. Vargottama: in the same rashi in the birth chart and in the navamsa, which strengthens a graha. Navamsa: the ninth-division chart, read for a graha’s inner strength. Combust: so close to the Sun that its strength is lost in the Sun’s rays.

Its nine pratyantars

Chandra–Guru divides into nine pratyantars from Guru’s own on. Each length is counted between the dates beside it, and comes out the same in any kundli give or take a day; the dates and readings are this one’s.

Common questions

How long is Chandra mahadasha Guru antardasha?

1 year 4 months (487 days): Chandra’s 10 years × Guru’s 16 years ÷ 120. It begins 2 years 11 months after a Chandra mahadasha starts.

Is Chandra mahadasha Guru antardasha good or bad?

Not in advance: it turns on your lagna and on where Chandra and Guru sit in your kundli. By Parashara’s lists it is strongest for Kark (Cancer), Vrishchik (Scorpio), Meen (Pisces) lagna. It is hardest for Vrishabh (Taurus), Mithun (Gemini), Kanya (Virgo), Makar (Capricorn), Kumbh (Aquarius) lagna. By nature the friendship is uneven: Chandra sees Guru as neutral, and Guru sees Chandra as a friend. On the Tula lagna kundli above, the Janam Kundli report reads it as “Mixed”, as its chip above says.

What are the pratyantars of Chandra mahadasha Guru antardasha?

Nine, in the order Guru, Shani, Budh, Ketu, Shukra, Surya, Chandra, Mangal, Rahu. Each is Chandra–Guru’s length × the pratyantar lord’s years ÷ 120, so the longest is Shukra’s, about 2 months 19 days, and the shortest Surya’s, about 25 days.

What upay helps in Guru antardasha?

Parashara gives this antardasha a remedy of its own (BPHS 53.29–31), set out above under “Parashara’s remedy”. The Guru beej mantra, Om Graam Greem Graum Sah Gurave Namah, and a daan of chana dal and turmeric on Thursday are the everyday upay for Chandra–Guru, where your kundli shows the need.
