How the two grahas get on

Shukra counts Guru neither friend nor enemy (neutral), and Guru counts Shukra an enemy. That natural relationship is where reading a Shukra–Guru period starts; where Shukra and Guru sit in your kundli decides what it brings.

What Parashara says

Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 60, verses 45–51

Parashara reads Guru’s antardasha in Shukra’s mahadasha by where Guru sits, counted from the lagna and from Shukra, and by what it rules; your kundli shows which line is yours, and though the text speaks of a man, its results apply to anyone.

When it goes well

  • When Guru (Jupiter) is in his exaltation or own sign, or in a kendra (the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house) or trikona (the 1st, 5th or 9th house) counted from the lagna (ascendant) or from Shukra (Venus), the mahadasha lord, BPHS gives the regaining of a lost position of authority, gains of the grain, clothes and property one wishes for, respect from friends and from those in power, gains of wealth, recognition, a good name, gains of vehicles, association with an employer and with learned people, diligent study of the shastras, the birth of a son, contentment, visits from close friends, and happiness for parents and son.BPHS 60.45–48

When it is hard

  • When Guru (Jupiter) is in the 6th, 8th or 12th, counted from Shukra (Venus), the mahadasha lord, and is joined by a malefic graha, BPHS warns of danger from those in power and from thieves, distress to oneself and relatives, quarrels, mental anguish, loss of position, going away to foreign lands, and danger of many kinds of illness.BPHS 60.49–50

Parashara’s remedy

For relief, BPHS prescribes the Mahamrityunjaya japa, the mantra to Shiva for health and long life.

BPHS 60.51

A caution: When Guru rules your 2nd or 7th house (the maraka houses, which the texts link with danger to life), BPHS warns of physical distress and asks for care with health. BPHS 60.51

Shukra–Guru for your lagna

What Shukra and Guru are for each lagna, as Parashara lists them, and the two read together

Both are hard for Vrishabh (Taurus) lagna, where the period asks for the most care. For Mesh (Aries), Mithun (Gemini), Kark (Cancer), Singh (Leo), Kanya (Virgo), Vrishchik (Scorpio), Makar (Capricorn), Kumbh (Aquarius), Meen (Pisces) lagna one is good and the other hard, so the period is mixed. Where one of the two is neutral, the other decides the lean: towards hard for Tula (Libra), Dhanu (Sagittarius).

The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:

  • Yogakaraka: the strongest graha a lagna can have: the one Parashara names as bringing yoga, or the one lord of both a kendra (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) and a trikona (1st, 5th, 9th) (34.13)
  • Benefic, Malefic, Neutral: works for the lagna; brings its harder matters; neither
  • Lagna lord: the lagna’s own graha, where the verse calls it neither good nor hard
  • Maraka: a killer Parashara names for the lagna, watched for health and longevity; printed alone, or after another label. It is not always the lord of the 2nd or 7th: where it differs, the line under it gives the verse
  • · Yoga: one of two grahas he says give yoga together for this lagna

From the Janam Kundli report

Shukra mahadasha Mixed

Shukra rules your 6th house and 11th house and sits in your 1st house: this period brings those matters forward — illness, debt, disputes, and thankless work; income, gains, elder siblings, and friends who help. Mixed — a kendra or trikona and strong in the navamsa; on the other side: short of Shadbala.

Guru antardasha Mixed

In this kundli it runs 20 October 2068 – 21 June 2071, from the age of 84 to 87. Its length here can differ from the one above by a day, because each kundli’s dates round to the day.

Guru: rules your 1st house and 4th house, sits in your 1st house. It brings the body, health, temperament and the self; the home, the mother, land and vehicles, and rest. Mixed — a kendra or trikona and strong in its sign; on the other side: short of Shadbala and in an enemy's sign in the navamsa.

Shadbala: the six-fold measure of a graha’s strength the report computes; “short of Shadbala” means below the strength the texts ask of it. Navamsa: the ninth-division chart, read for a graha’s inner strength.

Its nine pratyantars

Shukra–Guru divides into nine pratyantars from Guru’s own on. Each length is counted between the dates beside it, and comes out the same in any kundli give or take a day; the dates and readings are this one’s.

Common questions

How long is Shukra mahadasha Guru antardasha?

2 years 8 months (974 days): Shukra’s 20 years × Guru’s 16 years ÷ 120. It begins 10 years 2 months after a Shukra mahadasha starts.

Is Shukra mahadasha Guru antardasha good or bad?

Not in advance: it turns on your lagna and on where Shukra and Guru sit in your kundli. By Parashara’s lists no lagna has both lords favourable. It is hardest for Vrishabh (Taurus) lagna. By nature the friendship is uneven: Shukra sees Guru as neutral, and Guru sees Shukra as an enemy. On the Dhanu lagna kundli above, the Janam Kundli report reads it as “Mixed”, as its chip above says.

What are the pratyantars of Shukra mahadasha Guru antardasha?

Nine, in the order Guru, Shani, Budh, Ketu, Shukra, Surya, Chandra, Mangal, Rahu. Each is Shukra–Guru’s length × the pratyantar lord’s years ÷ 120, so the longest is Shukra’s, about 5 months 13 days, and the shortest Surya’s, about 1 month 17 days.

What upay helps in Guru antardasha?

Parashara gives this antardasha a remedy of its own (BPHS 60.51), set out above under “Parashara’s remedy”. The Guru beej mantra, Om Graam Greem Graum Sah Gurave Namah, and a daan of chana dal and turmeric on Thursday are the everyday upay for Shukra–Guru, where your kundli shows the need.
