Guru mahadasha is about
growth, children, teachers and blessings
Guru
Guru antardasha in Guru mahadasha runs 2 years 1 month 18 days. It is the first of the nine: every Guru mahadasha opens with it.
Guru’s 16 years × Guru’s 16 years again ÷ 120
2 years 1 month 18 days · 779 days
Shani antardasha follows it.
Every mahadasha opens with its own lord’s antardasha. For these months Guru rules both levels alone, so its matters show at their plainest.
growth, children, teachers and blessings
Guru–Guru area by area, in plain words, from Parashara’s verses set out below
| Area | What the verses give |
|---|---|
| Work and standing | When it goes well: you gain authority over people who hold power themselves, honour from those in power, and rare gains through your employer; when it is hard: your employer grows angry with you. |
| Money and property | When it goes well: you gain great wealth, livestock, clothes, jewellery and vehicles, and build a fine new house as your fortune rises; when it is hard: you lose wealth and grain. |
| Family | When it goes well: you find happiness through your spouse and children; when it is hard: relatives who share the family property slander you, and you are separated from spouse and children. |
| Health | When it is hard: you fall into low company, face great distress, risk an untimely death, and feel pain in the body. |
For faith and journeys, Parashara’s verses on Guru–Guru give nothing of their own; there Guru’s place in your kundli decides.
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 56, verses 1–7
Parashara reads Guru’s own antardasha by where Guru sits from the lagna and by what it rules; your kundli shows which line is yours, and though the text speaks of a man, its results apply to anyone.
For relief from these troubles, and so that one's hopes are fulfilled, BPHS prescribes Rudra japa and reciting the Shiva Sahasranama (the thousand names of Shiva).
BPHS 56.6–7A caution: When Guru rules your 2nd or 7th house, BPHS warns of pain in the body. The 2nd and 7th are the maraka houses, which the texts link with danger to life. BPHS 56.6–7
What Guru is for each lagna, as Parashara lists it
Guru is favourable for Mesh (Aries), Kark (Cancer), Singh (Leo), Vrishchik (Scorpio), Meen (Pisces) lagna. Guru is hard for Vrishabh (Taurus), Mithun (Gemini), Kanya (Virgo), Tula (Libra), Makar (Capricorn), Kumbh (Aquarius) lagna, where the period asks for the most care. For Dhanu (Sagittarius) lagna Guru is neutral, and where it sits decides the period.
The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:
| Lagna | Guru is (lord of) | This antardasha |
|---|---|---|
| Mesh (Aries) | Benefic 9th and 12th | Favourable |
| Vrishabh (Taurus) | Malefic · Maraka— lord of the 8th and 11th, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.23–24) 8th and 11th | Hard |
| Mithun (Gemini) | Malefic— lord of the 7th, but the killer the verse names for this lagna is Chandra (34.25–26) 7th and 10th | Hard |
| Kark (Cancer) | Benefic 6th and 9th | Favourable |
| Singh (Leo) | Benefic 5th and 8th | Favourable |
| Kanya (Virgo) | Malefic— lord of the 7th, but the killer the verse names for this lagna is Shukra (34.31–32) 4th and 7th | Hard |
| Tula (Libra) | Malefic · Maraka— lord of the 3rd and 6th, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.33–34) 3rd and 6th | Hard |
| Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Benefic— lord of the 2nd, but the killer the verse names for this lagna is Shukra (34.35–36) 2nd and 5th | Favourable |
| Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Neutral— the lagna lord, which the verse calls neutral (34.38) 1st and 4th | Placement decides |
| Makar (Capricorn) | Malefic 3rd and 12th | Hard |
| Kumbh (Aquarius) | Malefic · Maraka 2nd and 11th | Hard |
| Meen (Pisces) | Benefic · Yoga— gives yoga together with Mangal (34.44) 1st and 10th | Favourable |
A favourable Guru gives its own antardasha readily, a hard one asks for care, and a neutral one leaves it to where Guru sits.
One kundli that meets Guru–Guru at 70, read the way the report reads yours
From the Janam Kundli report
Guru rules your 3rd house and 6th house and sits in your 9th house: this period brings those matters forward — effort, courage, younger siblings and short journeys; illness, debt, disputes, and thankless work. Go carefully — short of Shadbala, in an enemy's sign in the navamsa, in an enemy's sign and combust; on the other side: a kendra or trikona and vargottama.
In this kundli it runs 14 May 2061 – 3 July 2063, from the age of 70 to 72. Its length here can differ from the one above by a day, because each kundli’s dates round to the day.
Guru: rules your 3rd house and 6th house, sits in your 9th house. It brings effort, courage, younger siblings and short journeys; illness, debt, disputes, and thankless work. Read as Guru mahadasha above: its own sub-period.
Shadbala: the six-fold measure of a graha’s strength the report computes; “short of Shadbala” means below the strength the texts ask of it. Vargottama: in the same rashi in the birth chart and in the navamsa, which strengthens a graha. Navamsa: the ninth-division chart, read for a graha’s inner strength. Combust: so close to the Sun that its strength is lost in the Sun’s rays.
Guru–Guru divides into nine pratyantars from Guru’s own on. Each length is counted between the dates beside it, and comes out the same in any kundli give or take a day; the dates and readings are this one’s.
| Pratyantar | Length | In this kundli | The report reads |
|---|---|---|---|
| Guru | 3 months 12 days | 14 May 2061 – 26 August 2061 | Care |
| Shani | 4 months 2 days | 26 August 2061 – 28 December 2061 | Opens |
| Budh | 3 months 20 days | 28 December 2061 – 17 April 2062 | Care |
| Ketu | 1 month 15 days | 17 April 2062 – 1 June 2062 | Mixed |
| Shukra | 4 months 8 days | 1 June 2062 – 9 October 2062 | Mixed |
| Surya | 1 month 8 days | 9 October 2062 – 17 November 2062 | Opens |
| Chandra | 2 months 4 days | 17 November 2062 – 21 January 2063 | Mixed |
| Mangal | 1 month 15 days | 21 January 2063 – 8 March 2063 | Mixed |
| Rahu | 3 months 25 days | 8 March 2063 – 3 July 2063 | Mixed |

Suggestions for Guru’s months, which your kundli confirms
Parashara gives Guru–Guru a remedy of its own (BPHS 56.6–7), set out above under “Parashara’s remedy”; it comes first.
ॐ ग्रां ग्रीं ग्रौं सः गुरवे नमः
Daan: chana dal and turmeric, on Thursday
What helps and what to keep clear of in any Guru period: Guru mahadasha. Its vrat, ratna, stotra and puja: Guru upay.
2 years 1 month 18 days (779 days). It is the first antardasha of every Guru mahadasha.
Not in advance: it turns on your lagna and on where Guru sits in your kundli. By Parashara’s lists it is strongest for Mesh (Aries), Kark (Cancer), Singh (Leo), Vrishchik (Scorpio), Meen (Pisces) lagna. It is hardest for Vrishabh (Taurus), Mithun (Gemini), Kanya (Virgo), Tula (Libra), Makar (Capricorn), Kumbh (Aquarius) lagna. On the Tula lagna kundli above, the Janam Kundli report reads it as “Care”, as its chip above says.
Nine, in the order Guru, Shani, Budh, Ketu, Shukra, Surya, Chandra, Mangal, Rahu. Each is Guru–Guru’s length × the pratyantar lord’s years ÷ 120, so the longest is Shukra’s, about 4 months 8 days, and the shortest Surya’s, about 1 month 8 days.
Parashara gives this antardasha a remedy of its own (BPHS 56.6–7), set out above under “Parashara’s remedy”. The Guru beej mantra, Om Graam Greem Graum Sah Gurave Namah, and a daan of chana dal and turmeric on Thursday are the everyday upay for Guru–Guru, where your kundli shows the need.
It follows from the Moon’s nakshatra at your birth. Enter your birth details and the whole 120-year timeline comes with it, each period read for your chart.
