How the two grahas get on

Rahu counts Surya an enemy, and Surya counts Rahu neither friend nor enemy (neutral). That natural relationship is where reading a Rahu–Surya period starts; where Rahu and Surya sit in your kundli decides what it brings. Texts differ on the friendships of Rahu and Ketu; this is the table the kundli here uses.

What Parashara says

Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 55, verses 60–67

Parashara reads Surya’s antardasha in Rahu’s mahadasha by where Surya sits, counted from the lagna and from Rahu, and by what it rules; your kundli shows which line is yours, and though the text speaks of a man, its results apply to anyone.

When it goes well

  • When Surya (Sun) is exalted, in his own sign, in the 11th house, in a kendra (the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house) or a trikona (the 1st, 5th or 9th house), or in his exalted or own navamsha (the ninth-part division of a sign), BPHS gives good relations with those in power, more wealth and grain, a measure of popularity and respect, and some chance of becoming the head of a village or locality.BPHS 55.60–61½
  • When Surya (Sun) is joined by, or receives the drishti (aspect, a graha's glance) of, the lord of the 1st, 2nd or 10th house, BPHS gives a good name, encouragement and help from the government, journeys abroad and a rise to high authority. It also gives vehicles, clothes and jewellery, fulfilled ambitions and happiness for one's children.BPHS 55.62–63½
  • When Surya (Sun) is in a kendra (the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house), in a trikona (the 1st, 5th or 9th house), or in the 3rd or 11th house, counted from Rahu, the mahadasha lord (ruler of the main period), BPHS gives well-being in every way, and recognition from people in power in foreign lands.BPHS 55.66

When it is hard

  • When Surya (Sun) is debilitated, or is in the 6th, 8th or 12th house counted from Rahu, the mahadasha lord (ruler of the main period), BPHS warns of fevers, dysentery and other illness, quarrels, friction with the authorities, travel, and danger from enemies, thieves and fire.BPHS 55.64–65

Parashara’s remedy

For relief from these troubles, BPHS prescribes the worship of Surya.

BPHS 55.67

A caution: When Surya rules the 2nd or 7th house, BPHS warns of the danger of a serious illness. The 2nd and 7th are the maraka houses, which the texts link with danger to life. BPHS 55.67

Rahu–Surya for your lagna

What Surya is for each lagna, as Parashara lists it; Rahu follows the lord of its rashi

The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:

  • Yogakaraka: the strongest graha a lagna can have: the one Parashara names as bringing yoga, or the one lord of both a kendra (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) and a trikona (1st, 5th, 9th) (34.13)
  • Benefic, Malefic, Neutral: works for the lagna; brings its harder matters; neither
  • Lagna lord: the lagna’s own graha, where the verse calls it neither good nor hard
  • Maraka: a killer Parashara names for the lagna, watched for health and longevity; printed alone, or after another label. It is not always the lord of the 2nd or 7th: where it differs, the line under it gives the verse
  • · Yoga: one of two grahas he says give yoga together for this lagna

Rahu rules no house, so no lagna makes it good or bad by lordship: it gives the results of the house it sits in and of the lord of that rashi. Rahu in each house shows how.

From the Janam Kundli report

Rahu mahadasha Mixed

Rahu sits in your 4th house: this period brings its matters forward — the home, the mother, land and vehicles, and rest. A node gives the results of the lord of its sign: here Shani, which rules your 4th house and 5th house and sits in your 3rd house. Mixed — a kendra or trikona, and nothing else: one point in favour does not open a period.

Surya antardasha Opens

In this kundli it runs 1 December 2057 – 26 October 2058, from the age of 67 to 68. Its length here can differ from the one above by a day, because each kundli’s dates round to the day.

Surya: rules your 11th house, sits in your 9th house. It brings income, gains, elder siblings, and friends who help. Favourable — a kendra or trikona, enough Shadbala and vargottama; on the other side: at a hard angle from Rahu.

Shadbala: the six-fold measure of a graha’s strength the report computes; “short of Shadbala” means below the strength the texts ask of it. Vargottama: in the same rashi in the birth chart and in the navamsa, which strengthens a graha.

Its nine pratyantars

Rahu–Surya divides into nine pratyantars from Surya’s own on. Each length is counted between the dates beside it, and comes out the same in any kundli give or take a day; the dates and readings are this one’s.

Common questions

How long is Rahu mahadasha Surya antardasha?

10 months 24 days (329 days): Rahu’s 18 years × Surya’s 6 years ÷ 120. It begins 14 years 6 months 18 days after a Rahu mahadasha starts.

Is Rahu mahadasha Surya antardasha good or bad?

Not in advance: it turns on your lagna and on where Rahu and Surya sit in your kundli. Rahu has no lagna of its own to be good or bad for; it gives the results of the lord of the rashi it sits in. Surya is favourable for Mesh (Aries), Vrishabh (Taurus), Singh (Leo), Vrishchik (Scorpio), Dhanu (Sagittarius) lagna. Surya is hard for Mithun (Gemini), Kark (Cancer), Tula (Libra), Kumbh (Aquarius), Meen (Pisces) lagna. By nature the friendship is uneven: Rahu sees Surya as an enemy, and Surya sees Rahu as neutral. On the Tula lagna kundli above, the Janam Kundli report reads it as “Opens”, as its chip above says.

What are the pratyantars of Rahu mahadasha Surya antardasha?

Nine, in the order Surya, Chandra, Mangal, Rahu, Guru, Shani, Budh, Ketu, Shukra. Each is Rahu–Surya’s length × the pratyantar lord’s years ÷ 120, so the longest is Shukra’s, about 1 month 25 days, and the shortest Surya’s, about 17 days.

What upay helps in Surya antardasha?

Parashara gives this antardasha a remedy of its own (BPHS 55.67), set out above under “Parashara’s remedy”. The Surya beej mantra, Om Hraam Hreem Hraum Sah Suryaya Namah, and a daan of wheat and jaggery on Sunday are the everyday upay for Rahu–Surya, where your kundli shows the need.
