How the two grahas get on

Shukra and Surya are enemies to each other. That natural relationship is where reading a Shukra–Surya period starts; where Shukra and Surya sit in your kundli decides what it brings.

Shukra mahadasha is about

marriage, comforts and the arts

Surya antardasha adds

standing, authority and the father

What it touches in life

Shukra–Surya area by area, in plain words, from Parashara’s verses set out below

AreaWhat the verses give
Work and standingWhen it goes well: a rise to authority, happiness from one's employer, name and fame, and better fortune; when it is hard: the displeasure of those in power.
Money and propertyWhen it goes well: a rise in wealth; when it is hard: damage to crops.
FamilyWhen it goes well: happiness from spouse, children, parents and friends, and marriage; when it is hard: quarrels with co-heirs, trouble to family members, harsh speech, distress to the father and loss of relatives.
HealthWhen it is hard: anguish and many illnesses.

For faith and journeys, Parashara’s verses on Shukra–Surya give nothing of their own; there the two grahas’ places in your kundli decide.

What Parashara says

Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 60, verses 12–20

Parashara reads Surya’s antardasha in Shukra’s mahadasha by where Surya sits, counted from the lagna and from Shukra, and by what it rules; your kundli shows which line is yours, and though the text speaks of a man, its results apply to anyone.

When it goes well

  • When Surya (Sun) is in his exaltation or own sign, in a kendra (the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house), a trikona (the 1st, 5th or 9th house), or the 2nd or 11th house; or is in a kendra, a trikona, or the 2nd or 11th, counted from Shukra (Venus), the mahadasha lord, BPHS gives a rise to authority and wealth, happiness from the spouse and children, happiness from one's employer, meetings with friends, happiness from parents, marriage, name and fame, better fortune and the birth of a son.BPHS 60.13–15

When it is hard

  • When Surya (Sun) is in any sign other than his exaltation or debilitation sign, BPHS warns of a period of anguish, the displeasure of those in power, and quarrels with co-heirs, those who share the family property. The translator doubts this verse as printed, since Surya gives good results in many of those signs; read it with the rest of your kundli.BPHS 60.12
  • When Surya (Sun) is in the 6th, 8th or 12th house, or in his debilitation sign (neecha rashi, where a graha is weakest) or an enemy's sign, BPHS warns of distress, anguish, trouble to members of the family, harsh speech, distress to the father, the loss of relatives, the displeasure of those in power, danger at home, many illnesses and damage to crops.BPHS 60.16–18

Parashara’s remedy

For relief, BPHS prescribes the worship of Surya.

BPHS 60.20

A caution: When Surya rules your 2nd or 7th house (the maraka houses, which the texts link with danger to life), BPHS warns that the grahas' influence turns adverse in this period, and asks for care. BPHS 60.19–20

Shukra–Surya for your lagna

What Shukra and Surya are for each lagna, as Parashara lists them, and the two read together

Both are hard for Kark (Cancer), Meen (Pisces) lagna, where the period asks for the most care. For Mesh (Aries), Vrishabh (Taurus), Mithun (Gemini), Singh (Leo), Vrishchik (Scorpio), Dhanu (Sagittarius), Kumbh (Aquarius) lagna one is good and the other hard, so the period is mixed. Where one of the two is neutral, the other decides the lean: towards good for Kanya (Virgo), Makar (Capricorn) and towards hard for Tula (Libra).

The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:

  • Yogakaraka: the strongest graha a lagna can have: the one Parashara names as bringing yoga, or the one lord of both a kendra (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) and a trikona (1st, 5th, 9th) (34.13)
  • Benefic, Malefic, Neutral: works for the lagna; brings its harder matters; neither
  • Lagna lord: the lagna’s own graha, where the verse calls it neither good nor hard
  • Maraka: a killer Parashara names for the lagna, watched for health and longevity; printed alone, or after another label. It is not always the lord of the 2nd or 7th: where it differs, the line under it gives the verse
  • · Yoga: one of two grahas he says give yoga together for this lagna

From the Janam Kundli report

Shukra mahadasha Mixed

Shukra rules your 6th house and 11th house and sits in your 1st house: this period brings those matters forward — illness, debt, disputes, and thankless work; income, gains, elder siblings, and friends who help. Mixed — a kendra or trikona and strong in the navamsa; on the other side: short of Shadbala.

Surya antardasha Mixed

In this kundli it runs 21 December 2061 – 21 December 2062, from the age of 77 to 78. Its length here can differ from the one above by a day, because each kundli’s dates round to the day.

Surya: rules your 9th house, sits in your 2nd house. It brings fortune, the father, teachers, and long travel. Mixed — a house of wealth or gain, lord of a trikona and strong in the navamsa; on the other side: short of Shadbala and in an enemy's sign.

Shadbala: the six-fold measure of a graha’s strength the report computes; “short of Shadbala” means below the strength the texts ask of it. Navamsa: the ninth-division chart, read for a graha’s inner strength.

Its nine pratyantars

Shukra–Surya divides into nine pratyantars from Surya’s own on. Each length is counted between the dates beside it, and comes out the same in any kundli give or take a day; the dates and readings are this one’s.

Common questions

How long is Shukra mahadasha Surya antardasha?

1 year (365 days): Shukra’s 20 years × Surya’s 6 years ÷ 120. It begins 3 years 4 months after a Shukra mahadasha starts.

Is Shukra mahadasha Surya antardasha good or bad?

Not in advance: it turns on your lagna and on where Shukra and Surya sit in your kundli. By Parashara’s lists no lagna has both lords favourable. It is hardest for Kark (Cancer), Meen (Pisces) lagna. By nature the two are enemies. On the Dhanu lagna kundli above, the Janam Kundli report reads it as “Mixed”, as its chip above says.

What are the pratyantars of Shukra mahadasha Surya antardasha?

Nine, in the order Surya, Chandra, Mangal, Rahu, Guru, Shani, Budh, Ketu, Shukra. Each is Shukra–Surya’s length × the pratyantar lord’s years ÷ 120, so the longest is Shukra’s, about 2 months, and the shortest Surya’s, about 18 days.

What upay helps in Surya antardasha?

Parashara gives this antardasha a remedy of its own (BPHS 60.20), set out above under “Parashara’s remedy”. The Surya beej mantra, Om Hraam Hreem Hraum Sah Suryaya Namah, and a daan of wheat and jaggery on Sunday are the everyday upay for Shukra–Surya, where your kundli shows the need.
