How the two grahas get on

Guru and Surya are friends to each other. That natural relationship is where reading a Guru–Surya period starts; where Guru and Surya sit in your kundli decides what it brings.

Guru mahadasha is about

growth, children, teachers and blessings

Surya antardasha adds

standing, authority and the father

What it touches in life

Guru–Surya area by area, in plain words, from Parashara’s verses set out below

AreaWhat the verses give
Work and standingWhen it goes well: you gain good relations with those in power and succeed in your ventures.
Money and propertyWhen it goes well: you gain wealth, vehicles, clothes and jewellery.
FamilyWhen it goes well: a child is born and you find happiness; when it is hard: you are separated from your kinsmen.
HealthWhen it is hard: you suffer nervous disorders, fever, laziness, a pull towards wrongdoing, hostility towards everyone, and needless distress to body and mind.

For faith and journeys, Parashara’s verses on Guru–Surya give nothing of their own; there the two grahas’ places in your kundli decide.

What Parashara says

Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 56, verses 51–57

Parashara reads Surya’s antardasha in Guru’s mahadasha by where Surya sits, counted from the lagna and from Guru, and by what it rules; your kundli shows which line is yours, and though the text speaks of a man, its results apply to anyone.

When it goes well

  • When Surya (Sun) is strong and is exalted, in his own sign, in a kendra (the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house) or a trikona (the 1st, 5th or 9th house), or in the 3rd, 11th or 2nd house, BPHS gives wealth, respect and happiness, and vehicles, clothes and jewellery. It also gives the birth of children, good relations with those in power, and success in ventures.BPHS 56.51–53

When it is hard

  • When Surya (Sun) is in the 6th, 8th or 12th house, or in the 6th, 8th or 12th house counted from Guru, the mahadasha lord (ruler of the main period), BPHS warns of nervous disorders, fever, laziness or reluctance to do good deeds, a pull towards wrongdoing, hostility towards everyone, separation from kinsmen and distress without cause.BPHS 56.54–55½

Parashara’s remedy

For relief from these troubles and for good health, BPHS prescribes reciting the Aditya Hridaya (the hymn to Surya).

BPHS 56.56–57

A caution: When Surya rules the 2nd or 7th house, BPHS warns of distress to the body. The 2nd and 7th are the maraka houses, which the texts link with danger to life. BPHS 56.56–57

Guru–Surya for your lagna

What Guru and Surya are for each lagna, as Parashara lists them, and the two read together

Both are favourable for Mesh (Aries), Singh (Leo), Vrishchik (Scorpio) lagna. Both are hard for Mithun (Gemini), Tula (Libra), Kumbh (Aquarius) lagna, where the period asks for the most care. For Vrishabh (Taurus), Kark (Cancer), Meen (Pisces) lagna one is good and the other hard, so the period is mixed. Where one of the two is neutral, the other decides the lean: towards good for Dhanu (Sagittarius) and towards hard for Kanya (Virgo), Makar (Capricorn).

The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:

  • Yogakaraka: the strongest graha a lagna can have: the one Parashara names as bringing yoga, or the one lord of both a kendra (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) and a trikona (1st, 5th, 9th) (34.13)
  • Benefic, Malefic, Neutral: works for the lagna; brings its harder matters; neither
  • Lagna lord: the lagna’s own graha, where the verse calls it neither good nor hard
  • Maraka: a killer Parashara names for the lagna, watched for health and longevity; printed alone, or after another label. It is not always the lord of the 2nd or 7th: where it differs, the line under it gives the verse
  • · Yoga: one of two grahas he says give yoga together for this lagna

Guru mahadasha Care

Guru rules your 3rd house and 6th house and sits in your 9th house: this period brings those matters forward — effort, courage, younger siblings and short journeys; illness, debt, disputes, and thankless work. Go carefully — short of Shadbala, in an enemy's sign in the navamsa, in an enemy's sign and combust; on the other side: a kendra or trikona and vargottama.

Surya antardasha Opens

In this kundli it runs 26 November 2071 – 13 September 2072, from the age of 81 to 82. Its length here can differ from the one above by a day, because each kundli’s dates round to the day.

Surya: rules your 11th house, sits in your 9th house. It brings income, gains, elder siblings, and friends who help. Favourable — a kendra or trikona, enough Shadbala and vargottama.

Shadbala: the six-fold measure of a graha’s strength the report computes; “short of Shadbala” means below the strength the texts ask of it. Vargottama: in the same rashi in the birth chart and in the navamsa, which strengthens a graha. Navamsa: the ninth-division chart, read for a graha’s inner strength. Combust: so close to the Sun that its strength is lost in the Sun’s rays.

Its nine pratyantars

Guru–Surya divides into nine pratyantars from Surya’s own on. Each length is counted between the dates beside it, and comes out the same in any kundli give or take a day; the dates and readings are this one’s.

Common questions

How long is Guru mahadasha Surya antardasha?

9 months 18 days (292 days): Guru’s 16 years × Surya’s 6 years ÷ 120. It begins 10 years 6 months 12 days after a Guru mahadasha starts.

Is Guru mahadasha Surya antardasha good or bad?

Not in advance: it turns on your lagna and on where Guru and Surya sit in your kundli. By Parashara’s lists it is strongest for Mesh (Aries), Singh (Leo), Vrishchik (Scorpio) lagna. It is hardest for Mithun (Gemini), Tula (Libra), Kumbh (Aquarius) lagna. By nature the two are friends. On the Tula lagna kundli above, the Janam Kundli report reads it as “Opens”, as its chip above says.

What are the pratyantars of Guru mahadasha Surya antardasha?

Nine, in the order Surya, Chandra, Mangal, Rahu, Guru, Shani, Budh, Ketu, Shukra. Each is Guru–Surya’s length × the pratyantar lord’s years ÷ 120, so the longest is Shukra’s, about 1 month 18 days, and the shortest Surya’s, about 14 days.

What upay helps in Surya antardasha?

Parashara gives this antardasha a remedy of its own (BPHS 56.56–57), set out above under “Parashara’s remedy”. The Surya beej mantra, Om Hraam Hreem Hraum Sah Suryaya Namah, and a daan of wheat and jaggery on Sunday are the everyday upay for Guru–Surya, where your kundli shows the need.
