Guru mahadasha is about
growth, children, teachers and blessings
Guru · Rahu
Rahu antardasha in Guru mahadasha runs 2 years 4 months 24 days. It is the ninth of the nine and begins 13 years 7 months 6 days after the mahadasha starts.
Guru’s 16 years × Rahu’s 18 years ÷ 120
2 years 4 months 24 days · 877 days
Mangal antardasha comes before it, and it closes the mahadasha; Shani mahadasha begins when it ends. The last months of a mahadasha, where one period hands over to the next, are called dasha sandhi (the junction), and the tradition reads them with care.
Guru and Rahu are neither friends nor enemies to each other (neutral). That natural relationship is where reading a Guru–Rahu period starts; where Guru and Rahu sit in your kundli decides what it brings. Texts differ on the friendships of Rahu and Ketu; this is the table the kundli here uses.
growth, children, teachers and blessings
ambition, the unfamiliar and sudden turns
Guru–Rahu area by area, in plain words, from Parashara’s verses set out below
| Area | What the verses give |
|---|---|
| Work and standing | When it goes well: you gain authority over a village or region and meet a foreign dignitary. |
| Money and property | When it goes well: you gain wealth and grain, especially in the antardasha's first five months. |
| Family | When it goes well: your family thrives; when it is hard: home affairs trouble you and you clash with siblings and those who share family property. |
| Health | When it is hard: thieves, snakes, the authorities and wounds threaten you, bad dreams and causeless quarrels trouble you, and illness may follow. |
| Faith and journeys | When it goes well: you turn to yoga practice, travel to distant lands, and bathe at holy places. |
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 56, verses 72–80
Parashara reads Rahu’s antardasha in Guru’s mahadasha by where Rahu sits, counted from the lagna and from Guru, and by what it rules; your kundli shows which line is yours, and though the text speaks of a man, its results apply to anyone.
For relief from these troubles, BPHS prescribes the Mrityunjaya japa (the Mahamrityunjaya mantra, recited for health and long life) and giving a goat in charity.
BPHS 56.79–80A caution: When Rahu sits in the 2nd or 7th house, BPHS warns of distress to the body. The 2nd and 7th are the maraka houses, which the texts link with danger to life. BPHS 56.79–80
What Guru is for each lagna, as Parashara lists it; Rahu follows the lord of its rashi
The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:
| Lagna | Guru is (lord of) |
|---|---|
| Mesh (Aries) | Benefic 9th and 12th |
| Vrishabh (Taurus) | Malefic · Maraka— lord of the 8th and 11th, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.23–24) 8th and 11th |
| Mithun (Gemini) | Malefic— lord of the 7th, but the killer the verse names for this lagna is Chandra (34.25–26) 7th and 10th |
| Kark (Cancer) | Benefic 6th and 9th |
| Singh (Leo) | Benefic 5th and 8th |
| Kanya (Virgo) | Malefic— lord of the 7th, but the killer the verse names for this lagna is Shukra (34.31–32) 4th and 7th |
| Tula (Libra) | Malefic · Maraka— lord of the 3rd and 6th, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.33–34) 3rd and 6th |
| Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Benefic— lord of the 2nd, but the killer the verse names for this lagna is Shukra (34.35–36) 2nd and 5th |
| Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Neutral— the lagna lord, which the verse calls neutral (34.38) 1st and 4th |
| Makar (Capricorn) | Malefic 3rd and 12th |
| Kumbh (Aquarius) | Malefic · Maraka 2nd and 11th |
| Meen (Pisces) | Benefic · Yoga— gives yoga together with Mangal (34.44) 1st and 10th |
Rahu rules no house, so no lagna makes it good or bad by lordship: it gives the results of the house it sits in and of the lord of that rashi. Rahu in each house shows how.
One kundli that meets Guru–Rahu at 84, read the way the report reads yours
From the Janam Kundli report
Guru rules your 3rd house and 6th house and sits in your 9th house: this period brings those matters forward — effort, courage, younger siblings and short journeys; illness, debt, disputes, and thankless work. Go carefully — short of Shadbala, in an enemy's sign in the navamsa, in an enemy's sign and combust; on the other side: a kendra or trikona and vargottama.
In this kundli it runs 20 December 2074 – 14 May 2077, from the age of 84 to 86. Its length here can differ from the one above by a day, because each kundli’s dates round to the day.
Rahu: sits in your 4th house. It brings the home, the mother, land and vehicles, and rest. Mixed — a kendra or trikona; on the other side: at a hard angle from Guru.
Shadbala: the six-fold measure of a graha’s strength the report computes; “short of Shadbala” means below the strength the texts ask of it. Vargottama: in the same rashi in the birth chart and in the navamsa, which strengthens a graha. Navamsa: the ninth-division chart, read for a graha’s inner strength. Combust: so close to the Sun that its strength is lost in the Sun’s rays.
Guru–Rahu divides into nine pratyantars from Rahu’s own on. Each length is counted between the dates beside it, and comes out the same in any kundli give or take a day; the dates and readings are this one’s.
| Pratyantar | Length | In this kundli | The report reads |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rahu | 4 months 10 days | 20 December 2074 – 30 April 2075 | Mixed |
| Guru | 3 months 26 days | 30 April 2075 – 25 August 2075 | Care |
| Shani | 4 months 17 days | 25 August 2075 – 11 January 2076 | Mixed |
| Budh | 4 months 3 days | 11 January 2076 – 14 May 2076 | Mixed |
| Ketu | 1 month 20 days | 14 May 2076 – 4 July 2076 | Mixed |
| Shukra | 4 months 23 days | 4 July 2076 – 27 November 2076 | Mixed |
| Surya | 1 month 14 days | 27 November 2076 – 10 January 2077 | Opens |
| Chandra | 2 months 14 days | 10 January 2077 – 24 March 2077 | Mixed |
| Mangal | 1 month 20 days | 24 March 2077 – 14 May 2077 | Mixed |

Suggestions for Rahu’s months, which your kundli confirms
Parashara gives Guru–Rahu a remedy of its own (BPHS 56.79–80), set out above under “Parashara’s remedy”; it comes first.
ॐ भ्रां भ्रीं भ्रौं सः राहवे नमः
Daan: a coconut and black cloth, on Saturday
What helps and what to keep clear of in any Rahu period: Rahu mahadasha. Its vrat, ratna, stotra and puja: Rahu upay.
2 years 4 months 24 days (877 days): Guru’s 16 years × Rahu’s 18 years ÷ 120. It begins 13 years 7 months 6 days after a Guru mahadasha starts.
Not in advance: it turns on your lagna and on where Guru and Rahu sit in your kundli. Rahu has no lagna of its own to be good or bad for; it gives the results of the lord of the rashi it sits in. Guru is favourable for Mesh (Aries), Kark (Cancer), Singh (Leo), Vrishchik (Scorpio), Meen (Pisces) lagna. Guru is hard for Vrishabh (Taurus), Mithun (Gemini), Kanya (Virgo), Tula (Libra), Makar (Capricorn), Kumbh (Aquarius) lagna. By nature the two are neither friends nor enemies. On the Tula lagna kundli above, the Janam Kundli report reads it as “Mixed”, as its chip above says.
Nine, in the order Rahu, Guru, Shani, Budh, Ketu, Shukra, Surya, Chandra, Mangal. Each is Guru–Rahu’s length × the pratyantar lord’s years ÷ 120, so the longest is Shukra’s, about 4 months 23 days, and the shortest Surya’s, about 1 month 14 days.
Parashara gives this antardasha a remedy of its own (BPHS 56.79–80), set out above under “Parashara’s remedy”. The Rahu beej mantra, Om Bhraam Bhreem Bhraum Sah Rahave Namah, and a daan of a coconut and black cloth on Saturday are the everyday upay for Guru–Rahu, where your kundli shows the need.
It follows from the Moon’s nakshatra at your birth. Enter your birth details and the whole 120-year timeline comes with it, each period read for your chart.
