Guru mahadasha is about
growth, children, teachers and blessings
Guru · Shani
Shani antardasha in Guru mahadasha runs 2 years 6 months 12 days. It is the second of the nine and begins 2 years 1 month 18 days after the mahadasha starts.
Guru’s 16 years × Shani’s 19 years ÷ 120
2 years 6 months 12 days · 925 days
Guru antardasha comes before it, and Budh antardasha after it.
Guru and Shani are neither friends nor enemies to each other (neutral). That natural relationship is where reading a Guru–Shani period starts; where Guru and Shani sit in your kundli decides what it brings.
growth, children, teachers and blessings
hard work, duty and delay
Guru–Shani area by area, in plain words, from Parashara’s verses set out below
| Area | What the verses give |
|---|---|
| Work and standing | When it goes well: you rise to authority, and meet with those in power who give you wealth; when it is hard: you lose your job and face obstacles in business. |
| Money and property | When it goes well: you gain clothes, jewellery, wealth, grain, vehicles, livestock, land, a house, and property that comes even through an opponent; when it is hard: you lose wealth and livestock. |
| Family | When it goes well: you find happiness through your son and friends; when it is hard: your spouse and children are hurt, your home is unhappy, and kinsmen turn against you. |
| Health | When it is hard: you suffer fever, mental anguish, and pain in the body. |
For faith and journeys, Parashara’s verses on Guru–Shani give nothing of their own; there the two grahas’ places in your kundli decide.
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 56, verses 8–19
Parashara reads Shani’s antardasha in Guru’s mahadasha by where Shani sits, counted from the lagna and from Guru, and by what it rules; your kundli shows which line is yours, and though the text speaks of a man, its results apply to anyone.
For relief from these troubles and for sound health, BPHS prescribes reciting the Vishnu Sahasranama (the thousand names of Vishnu) and giving a black cow or a female buffalo in charity.
BPHS 56.18–19A caution: When Shani rules the 2nd or 7th house, BPHS counts this sub-period maraka (a time the texts link with danger to life) and warns of the fear of untimely death. BPHS 56.18–19
What Guru and Shani are for each lagna, as Parashara lists them, and the two read together
For Mesh (Aries), Vrishabh (Taurus), Kark (Cancer), Singh (Leo), Tula (Libra), Vrishchik (Scorpio), Kumbh (Aquarius), Meen (Pisces) lagna one is good and the other hard, so the period is mixed. Where one of the two is neutral, the other decides the lean: towards hard for Mithun (Gemini), Kanya (Virgo), Dhanu (Sagittarius), Makar (Capricorn).
The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:
| Lagna | Guru is (lord of) | Shani is (lord of) | Together |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mesh (Aries) | Benefic 9th and 12th | Malefic 10th and 11th | Mixed |
| Vrishabh (Taurus) | Malefic · Maraka— lord of the 8th and 11th, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.23–24) 8th and 11th | Yogakaraka 9th and 10th | Mixed |
| Mithun (Gemini) | Malefic— lord of the 7th, but the killer the verse names for this lagna is Chandra (34.25–26) 7th and 10th | Neutral 8th and 9th | Leans hard |
| Kark (Cancer) | Benefic 6th and 9th | Maraka 7th and 8th | Mixed |
| Singh (Leo) | Benefic 5th and 8th | Malefic · Maraka 6th and 7th | Mixed |
| Kanya (Virgo) | Malefic— lord of the 7th, but the killer the verse names for this lagna is Shukra (34.31–32) 4th and 7th | Neutral 5th and 6th | Leans hard |
| Tula (Libra) | Malefic · Maraka— lord of the 3rd and 6th, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.33–34) 3rd and 6th | Yogakaraka 4th and 5th | Mixed |
| Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Benefic— lord of the 2nd, but the killer the verse names for this lagna is Shukra (34.35–36) 2nd and 5th | Malefic 3rd and 4th | Mixed |
| Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Neutral— the lagna lord, which the verse calls neutral (34.38) 1st and 4th | Maraka 2nd and 3rd | Leans hard |
| Makar (Capricorn) | Malefic 3rd and 12th | Neutral— the lagna lord; not a killer on his own, the verse says (34.39) 1st and 2nd | Leans hard |
| Kumbh (Aquarius) | Malefic · Maraka 2nd and 11th | Benefic— the lagna lord, and one the verse itself names auspicious for Kumbh (34.41) 1st and 12th | Mixed |
| Meen (Pisces) | Benefic · Yoga— gives yoga together with Mangal (34.44) 1st and 10th | Malefic · Maraka— lord of the 11th and 12th, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.43–44) 11th and 12th | Mixed |
“Together” reads Guru and Shani side by side: both favourable is Favourable; one favourable and one neutral, Leans favourable; one each way, Mixed; one hard and one neutral, Leans hard; both hard, Hard; both neutral, Placement decides. A Yoga pair is two grahas Parashara names together for that lagna.
One kundli that meets Guru–Shani at 72, read the way the report reads yours
From the Janam Kundli report
Guru rules your 3rd house and 6th house and sits in your 9th house: this period brings those matters forward — effort, courage, younger siblings and short journeys; illness, debt, disputes, and thankless work. Go carefully — short of Shadbala, in an enemy's sign in the navamsa, in an enemy's sign and combust; on the other side: a kendra or trikona and vargottama.
In this kundli it runs 3 July 2063 – 13 January 2066, from the age of 72 to 75. Its length here can differ from the one above by a day, because each kundli’s dates round to the day.
Shani: rules your 4th house and 5th house, sits in your 3rd house. It brings the home, the mother, land and vehicles, and rest; children, study, and creative work. Favourable — lord of a trikona, well placed from Guru and vargottama; on the other side: short of Shadbala.
Shadbala: the six-fold measure of a graha’s strength the report computes; “short of Shadbala” means below the strength the texts ask of it. Vargottama: in the same rashi in the birth chart and in the navamsa, which strengthens a graha. Navamsa: the ninth-division chart, read for a graha’s inner strength. Combust: so close to the Sun that its strength is lost in the Sun’s rays.
Guru–Shani divides into nine pratyantars from Shani’s own on. Each length is counted between the dates beside it, and comes out the same in any kundli give or take a day; the dates and readings are this one’s.
| Pratyantar | Length | In this kundli | The report reads |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shani | 4 months 23 days | 3 July 2063 – 26 November 2063 | Mixed |
| Budh | 4 months 10 days | 26 November 2063 – 5 April 2064 | Care |
| Ketu | 1 month 24 days | 5 April 2064 – 29 May 2064 | Care |
| Shukra | 5 months 1 day | 29 May 2064 – 30 October 2064 | Mixed |
| Surya | 1 month 16 days | 30 October 2064 – 16 December 2064 | Opens |
| Chandra | 2 months 15 days | 16 December 2064 – 3 March 2065 | Mixed |
| Mangal | 1 month 23 days | 3 March 2065 – 26 April 2065 | Mixed |
| Rahu | 4 months 16 days | 26 April 2065 – 11 September 2065 | Mixed |
| Guru | 4 months 2 days | 11 September 2065 – 13 January 2066 | Mixed |

Suggestions for Shani’s months, which your kundli confirms
Parashara gives Guru–Shani a remedy of its own (BPHS 56.18–19), set out above under “Parashara’s remedy”; it comes first.
ॐ प्रां प्रीं प्रौं सः शनैश्चराय नमः
Daan: black sesame and iron, on Saturday
What helps and what to keep clear of in any Shani period: Shani mahadasha. Its vrat, ratna, stotra and puja: Shani upay.
2 years 6 months 12 days (925 days): Guru’s 16 years × Shani’s 19 years ÷ 120. It begins 2 years 1 month 18 days after a Guru mahadasha starts.
Not in advance: it turns on your lagna and on where Guru and Shani sit in your kundli. By Parashara’s lists no lagna has both lords favourable. By nature the two are neither friends nor enemies. On the Tula lagna kundli above, the Janam Kundli report reads it as “Opens”, as its chip above says.
Nine, in the order Shani, Budh, Ketu, Shukra, Surya, Chandra, Mangal, Rahu, Guru. Each is Guru–Shani’s length × the pratyantar lord’s years ÷ 120, so the longest is Shukra’s, about 5 months 1 day, and the shortest Surya’s, about 1 month 16 days.
Parashara gives this antardasha a remedy of its own (BPHS 56.18–19), set out above under “Parashara’s remedy”. The Shani beej mantra, Om Praam Preem Praum Sah Shanaishcharaya Namah, and a daan of black sesame and iron on Saturday are the everyday upay for Guru–Shani, where your kundli shows the need.
It follows from the Moon’s nakshatra at your birth. Enter your birth details and the whole 120-year timeline comes with it, each period read for your chart.
