Rahu mahadasha is about
ambition, the unfamiliar and sudden turns
Rahu · Shani
Shani antardasha in Rahu mahadasha runs 2 years 10 months 6 days. It is the third of the nine and begins 5 years 1 month 6 days after the mahadasha starts.
Rahu’s 18 years × Shani’s 19 years ÷ 120
2 years 10 months 6 days · 1,041 days
Guru antardasha comes before it, and Budh antardasha after it.
Rahu counts Shani a friend, and Shani counts Rahu neither friend nor enemy (neutral). That natural relationship is where reading a Rahu–Shani period starts; where Rahu and Shani sit in your kundli decides what it brings. Texts differ on the friendships of Rahu and Ketu; this is the table the kundli here uses.
ambition, the unfamiliar and sudden turns
hard work, duty and delay
Rahu–Shani area by area, in plain words, from Parashara’s verses set out below
| Area | What the verses give |
|---|---|
| Work and standing | When it goes well: your devoted service wins favour from those in power; when it is hard: servants, authorities and enemies trouble you, and your name suffers. |
| Money and property | When it goes well: you gain money and livestock through working people, though travel west may bring loss through authorities and idleness may shrink income; when it is hard: a sudden gift of jewellery comes. |
| Family | When it goes well: happy occasions like a wedding take place; when it is hard: your spouse, children and kinsmen suffer, and you dispute with those sharing family property. |
| Health | When it is hard: heart trouble, an abdominal lump and sorrow trouble you. |
| Faith and journeys | When it is hard: you must travel abroad. |
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 55, verses 21–29
Parashara reads Shani’s antardasha in Rahu’s mahadasha by where Shani sits, counted from the lagna and from Rahu, and by what it rules; your kundli shows which line is yours, and though the text speaks of a man, its results apply to anyone.
For relief from these troubles and to regain good health, BPHS prescribes giving a black cow or a female buffalo in charity.
BPHS 55.27–29A caution: When Shani rules the 2nd or 7th house, BPHS counts this sub-period maraka (a time the texts link with danger to life) and warns that untimely death is possible. BPHS 55.27–29
What Shani is for each lagna, as Parashara lists it; Rahu follows the lord of its rashi
The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:
| Lagna | Shani is (lord of) |
|---|---|
| Mesh (Aries) | Malefic 10th and 11th |
| Vrishabh (Taurus) | Yogakaraka 9th and 10th |
| Mithun (Gemini) | Neutral 8th and 9th |
| Kark (Cancer) | Maraka 7th and 8th |
| Singh (Leo) | Malefic · Maraka 6th and 7th |
| Kanya (Virgo) | Neutral 5th and 6th |
| Tula (Libra) | Yogakaraka 4th and 5th |
| Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Malefic 3rd and 4th |
| Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Maraka 2nd and 3rd |
| Makar (Capricorn) | Neutral— the lagna lord; not a killer on his own, the verse says (34.39) 1st and 2nd |
| Kumbh (Aquarius) | Benefic— the lagna lord, and one the verse itself names auspicious for Kumbh (34.41) 1st and 12th |
| Meen (Pisces) | Malefic · Maraka— lord of the 11th and 12th, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.43–44) 11th and 12th |
Rahu rules no house, so no lagna makes it good or bad by lordship: it gives the results of the house it sits in and of the lord of that rashi. Rahu in each house shows how.
One kundli that meets Rahu–Shani at 57, read the way the report reads yours
From the Janam Kundli report
Rahu sits in your 4th house: this period brings its matters forward — the home, the mother, land and vehicles, and rest. A node gives the results of the lord of its sign: here Shani, which rules your 4th house and 5th house and sits in your 3rd house. Mixed — a kendra or trikona, and nothing else: one point in favour does not open a period.
In this kundli it runs 20 June 2048 – 27 April 2051, from the age of 57 to 60. Its length here can differ from the one above by a day, because each kundli’s dates round to the day.
Shani: rules your 4th house and 5th house, sits in your 3rd house. It brings the home, the mother, land and vehicles, and rest; children, study, and creative work. Mixed — lord of a trikona and vargottama; on the other side: at a hard angle from Rahu and short of Shadbala.
Shadbala: the six-fold measure of a graha’s strength the report computes; “short of Shadbala” means below the strength the texts ask of it. Vargottama: in the same rashi in the birth chart and in the navamsa, which strengthens a graha.
Rahu–Shani divides into nine pratyantars from Shani’s own on. Each length is counted between the dates beside it, and comes out the same in any kundli give or take a day; the dates and readings are this one’s.
| Pratyantar | Length | In this kundli | The report reads |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shani | 5 months 11 days | 20 June 2048 – 1 December 2048 | Mixed |
| Budh | 4 months 27 days | 1 December 2048 – 28 April 2049 | Care |
| Ketu | 2 months | 28 April 2049 – 28 June 2049 | Care |
| Shukra | 5 months 20 days | 28 June 2049 – 18 December 2049 | Mixed |
| Surya | 1 month 21 days | 18 December 2049 – 8 February 2050 | Opens |
| Chandra | 2 months 28 days | 8 February 2050 – 6 May 2050 | Mixed |
| Mangal | 2 months | 6 May 2050 – 6 July 2050 | Mixed |
| Rahu | 5 months 3 days | 6 July 2050 – 9 December 2050 | Mixed |
| Guru | 4 months 18 days | 9 December 2050 – 27 April 2051 | Mixed |

Suggestions for Shani’s months, which your kundli confirms
Parashara gives Rahu–Shani a remedy of its own (BPHS 55.27–29), set out above under “Parashara’s remedy”; it comes first.
ॐ प्रां प्रीं प्रौं सः शनैश्चराय नमः
Daan: black sesame and iron, on Saturday
What helps and what to keep clear of in any Shani period: Shani mahadasha. Its vrat, ratna, stotra and puja: Shani upay.
2 years 10 months 6 days (1,041 days): Rahu’s 18 years × Shani’s 19 years ÷ 120. It begins 5 years 1 month 6 days after a Rahu mahadasha starts.
Not in advance: it turns on your lagna and on where Rahu and Shani sit in your kundli. Rahu has no lagna of its own to be good or bad for; it gives the results of the lord of the rashi it sits in. Shani is favourable for Vrishabh (Taurus), Tula (Libra), Kumbh (Aquarius) lagna. Shani is hard for Mesh (Aries), Kark (Cancer), Singh (Leo), Vrishchik (Scorpio), Dhanu (Sagittarius), Meen (Pisces) lagna. By nature the friendship is uneven: Rahu sees Shani as a friend, and Shani sees Rahu as neutral. On the Tula lagna kundli above, the Janam Kundli report reads it as “Mixed”, as its chip above says.
Nine, in the order Shani, Budh, Ketu, Shukra, Surya, Chandra, Mangal, Rahu, Guru. Each is Rahu–Shani’s length × the pratyantar lord’s years ÷ 120, so the longest is Shukra’s, about 5 months 20 days, and the shortest Surya’s, about 1 month 21 days.
Parashara gives this antardasha a remedy of its own (BPHS 55.27–29), set out above under “Parashara’s remedy”. The Shani beej mantra, Om Praam Preem Praum Sah Shanaishcharaya Namah, and a daan of black sesame and iron on Saturday are the everyday upay for Rahu–Shani, where your kundli shows the need.
