Guru mahadasha is about
growth, children, teachers and blessings
Guru · Ketu
Ketu antardasha in Guru mahadasha runs 11 months 6 days. It is the fourth of the nine and begins 6 years 11 months 6 days after the mahadasha starts.
Guru’s 16 years × Ketu’s 7 years ÷ 120
11 months 6 days · 341 days
Budh antardasha comes before it, and Shukra antardasha after it.
Guru counts Ketu neither friend nor enemy (neutral), and Ketu counts Guru a friend. That natural relationship is where reading a Guru–Ketu period starts; where Guru and Ketu sit in your kundli decides what it brings. Texts differ on the friendships of Rahu and Ketu; this is the table the kundli here uses.
growth, children, teachers and blessings
letting go, the inward and the sudden
Guru–Ketu area by area, in plain words, from Parashara’s verses set out below
| Area | What the verses give |
|---|---|
| Work and standing | When it goes well: you gain the favour of those in power, succeed where you wish, and profit in business; when it is hard: the authorities' anger costs you your position. |
| Money and property | When it goes well: you gain some wealth, vehicles and livestock, though it may come as plain food or money by questionable means; when it is hard: anger from authorities costs you wealth. |
| Family | When it is hard: you clash with your father and brother. |
| Health | When it is hard: you may be imprisoned, fall ill, lose physical strength, suffer mental anguish, and feel distress in the body. |
For faith and journeys, Parashara’s verses on Guru–Ketu give nothing of their own; there the two grahas’ places in your kundli decide.
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 56, verses 32–38
Parashara reads Ketu’s antardasha in Guru’s mahadasha by where Ketu sits, counted from the lagna and from Guru, and by what it rules; your kundli shows which line is yours, and though the text speaks of a man, its results apply to anyone.
For relief from these troubles, BPHS prescribes the Mrityunjaya japa (the Mahamrityunjaya mantra, recited for health and long life), performed in the prescribed way.
BPHS 56.37–38A caution: When Ketu sits in your 2nd or 7th house or is joined with the lords of those houses, BPHS warns of distress to the body. The 2nd and 7th are the maraka houses, which the texts link with danger to life. BPHS 56.37–38
What Guru is for each lagna, as Parashara lists it; Ketu follows the lord of its rashi
The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:
| Lagna | Guru is (lord of) |
|---|---|
| Mesh (Aries) | Benefic 9th and 12th |
| Vrishabh (Taurus) | Malefic · Maraka— lord of the 8th and 11th, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.23–24) 8th and 11th |
| Mithun (Gemini) | Malefic— lord of the 7th, but the killer the verse names for this lagna is Chandra (34.25–26) 7th and 10th |
| Kark (Cancer) | Benefic 6th and 9th |
| Singh (Leo) | Benefic 5th and 8th |
| Kanya (Virgo) | Malefic— lord of the 7th, but the killer the verse names for this lagna is Shukra (34.31–32) 4th and 7th |
| Tula (Libra) | Malefic · Maraka— lord of the 3rd and 6th, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.33–34) 3rd and 6th |
| Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Benefic— lord of the 2nd, but the killer the verse names for this lagna is Shukra (34.35–36) 2nd and 5th |
| Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Neutral— the lagna lord, which the verse calls neutral (34.38) 1st and 4th |
| Makar (Capricorn) | Malefic 3rd and 12th |
| Kumbh (Aquarius) | Malefic · Maraka 2nd and 11th |
| Meen (Pisces) | Benefic · Yoga— gives yoga together with Mangal (34.44) 1st and 10th |
Ketu rules no house, so no lagna makes it good or bad by lordship: it gives the results of the house it sits in and of the lord of that rashi. Ketu in each house shows how.
One kundli that meets Guru–Ketu at 77, read the way the report reads yours
From the Janam Kundli report
Guru rules your 3rd house and 6th house and sits in your 9th house: this period brings those matters forward — effort, courage, younger siblings and short journeys; illness, debt, disputes, and thankless work. Go carefully — short of Shadbala, in an enemy's sign in the navamsa, in an enemy's sign and combust; on the other side: a kendra or trikona and vargottama.
In this kundli it runs 20 April 2068 – 27 March 2069, from the age of 77 to 78. Its length here can differ from the one above by a day, because each kundli’s dates round to the day.
Ketu: sits in your 10th house. It brings work, standing, and those senior to you. Mixed — a kendra or trikona; on the other side: its sign's lord weak.
Shadbala: the six-fold measure of a graha’s strength the report computes; “short of Shadbala” means below the strength the texts ask of it. Vargottama: in the same rashi in the birth chart and in the navamsa, which strengthens a graha. Navamsa: the ninth-division chart, read for a graha’s inner strength. Combust: so close to the Sun that its strength is lost in the Sun’s rays.
Guru–Ketu divides into nine pratyantars from Ketu’s own on. Each length is counted between the dates beside it, and comes out the same in any kundli give or take a day; the dates and readings are this one’s.
| Pratyantar | Length | In this kundli | The report reads |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ketu | 20 days | 20 April 2068 – 10 May 2068 | Mixed |
| Shukra | 1 month 25 days | 10 May 2068 – 5 July 2068 | Mixed |
| Surya | 17 days | 5 July 2068 – 22 July 2068 | Opens |
| Chandra | 29 days | 22 July 2068 – 20 August 2068 | Mixed |
| Mangal | 20 days | 20 August 2068 – 9 September 2068 | Mixed |
| Rahu | 1 month 21 days | 9 September 2068 – 30 October 2068 | Opens |
| Guru | 1 month 14 days | 30 October 2068 – 14 December 2068 | Care |
| Shani | 1 month 23 days | 14 December 2068 – 6 February 2069 | Mixed |
| Budh | 1 month 21 days | 6 February 2069 – 27 March 2069 | Care |

Suggestions for Ketu’s months, which your kundli confirms
Parashara gives Guru–Ketu a remedy of its own (BPHS 56.37–38), set out above under “Parashara’s remedy”; it comes first.
ॐ स्रां स्रीं स्रौं सः केतवे नमः
Daan: a blanket and sesame, on Tuesday
What helps and what to keep clear of in any Ketu period: Ketu mahadasha. Its vrat, ratna, stotra and puja: Ketu upay.
11 months 6 days (341 days): Guru’s 16 years × Ketu’s 7 years ÷ 120. It begins 6 years 11 months 6 days after a Guru mahadasha starts.
Not in advance: it turns on your lagna and on where Guru and Ketu sit in your kundli. Ketu has no lagna of its own to be good or bad for; it gives the results of the lord of the rashi it sits in. Guru is favourable for Mesh (Aries), Kark (Cancer), Singh (Leo), Vrishchik (Scorpio), Meen (Pisces) lagna. Guru is hard for Vrishabh (Taurus), Mithun (Gemini), Kanya (Virgo), Tula (Libra), Makar (Capricorn), Kumbh (Aquarius) lagna. By nature the friendship is uneven: Guru sees Ketu as neutral, and Ketu sees Guru as a friend. On the Tula lagna kundli above, the Janam Kundli report reads it as “Mixed”, as its chip above says.
Nine, in the order Ketu, Shukra, Surya, Chandra, Mangal, Rahu, Guru, Shani, Budh. Each is Guru–Ketu’s length × the pratyantar lord’s years ÷ 120, so the longest is Shukra’s, about 1 month 25 days, and the shortest Surya’s, about 17 days.
Parashara gives this antardasha a remedy of its own (BPHS 56.37–38), set out above under “Parashara’s remedy”. The Ketu beej mantra, Om Sraam Sreem Sraum Sah Ketave Namah, and a daan of a blanket and sesame on Tuesday are the everyday upay for Guru–Ketu, where your kundli shows the need.
It follows from the Moon’s nakshatra at your birth. Enter your birth details and the whole 120-year timeline comes with it, each period read for your chart.
